Some of these pictures are hilarious! The thing that strikes me about all these, is that a costume doesn't really make someone a convincing commissar/space marine/etc. When a high-budget film is produced, there's a casting department as well as a costume department. Even the guys shown here who've put plenty of effort into their costumes still look a bit stupid IMO. That's because they tend to be pale/chubby/scrawny. Good example, that guy dressed as a commissar next to the sister of battle: he's put some effort in, but frankly he looks like a super spindly guy wearing someone else clothes and beard. If you wear fake muttonchops, you need to look like the rest of your face could actually grow a beard. If you wear a trenchcoat with epaulettes and a big collar, you may want to have shoulders and a neck somewhere in there.

<-- Servo Skull, I even painted this one myself!

I am planning a case mod with a Servo skull in the futures... when there are robots. Even if the pipes don't go all the way up make sure you provide a support structure, or they will weight on you, and look clumsy.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a very short baby step away from losing all your dignity and running around a uni campus pretending to be a vampire or worse dressing up like an animal. One could, however, argue that dressing up as an animal or said vampire meant you had no dignity to begin with or it was beaten out of you from a young age.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Probably the worst thing thats happened to me in my cosplay life happened yesterday.
But first i wanna say STUPID OLD PEOPLE!
Now i will explain, here in Redcliffe we had the opening ceremony of a brand new bridge yesterday and to mark the occasion i went in cosplay mainly due to the fact of i coulsd and i wanted to have fun. So i walked around for a little got a few strange looks but most were positive comments and i even had a few photos taken.
I walking back up the beach when a security guard stops me, tells me to wait and about 4 police come up saying something like 'We have received complaints about your costume you have been frightening some of the old people and staring at people.' bs! the only reason they complain was because i looked different and how could i stare at people i was wearing sunglasses. the only time i did stare at people was when they stared at me to long. AARGH!

And to top it all off they tell me to go home leave all the stuff there and if they find me wearing that stuff in public again while the festival is on i will be arrested. Did i turn my back for a second and suddenly Australia becomes a fething dictatorship? What happened to freedom of expression? What happened to free will? I even asked the guy iif i could keep on wearing my long coat there and i swear he wanted to say no.

I'm all for people cosplaying if that is what they are into.

However, do it in private or at a public event geared for such things (conventions, etc.)

When i owned my game store I had a couple guys that always came to friday game nights in cosplay and proceeded to walk around talking in bad accents for hours. It was funny/interesting for about the first five minutes...

Nothing is more annoying then cosplayers in public who think they are being clever...

And to be honest Masked-one your costume is easily rather confusing. Mostly because you don't look much different then half the skater/emo loiterers hanging out around the local 7-eleven to be honest.

So the mask simply made you look like a skater/loiterer who might be up to something since most people don't wear gas masks at public gatherings...

I think the reaction you got was to be expected.

Oh my...lol. Nothing against cosplay here but let's think this through;

1. Dressing up in a hooded sweatshirt/long coat
2. Wearing what could be taken as a gas mask
3. At a bridge opening ceremony
4. In a post 9-11 world

You're lucky you weren't tased =p. However, next time security stops you stay in character. If they ask you why you are dressed that way, tell them that the God Emperor wills it and they are heretics, then post their reactions.

With it only just past the 5th anniversary of the London tube bombings where witnesses said about seeing wires hanging out of bags and coats I think you were lucky not to have an armed response team jump on you... You really need to think about where and when you wear that stuff.

dude, you did say Redcliffe, right?

As in Redcliffe, QLD?

Queensland has NEVER been particularly democratic or a haven for free expression. It's been (outside of the Gold Coast and certain areas of Port Douglass shire) a haven for conservatives (and old conservatives at that - ask your olds about the "white shoe brigade" who used to 'run' QLD sometime) for a loooong time.

Still, hood AND gasmask in a public area for the opening of an infrastructure piece is a bad move. Even if we aren't the US, the police still regard someone in a hood and mask as someone who is probably up to no good (reasonable suspicion) - as someone who wasn't a threat wouldn't need to conceal their face, neh?
(The whole "you have nothing to fear if you've done nothing wrong" is a cornerstone of our governmental philosophy.)

Still, at least it wasn't Melbourne. You'd be bleeding to death on the footpath from 3 dozen bullet wounds (two cops would have reloaded).
[Melbourne police were bombed a couple of times, so they are a tad jumpy these days.]

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Yeah but batman is "batman" people know him .
they dont know some emo kid with a gas mask and a stick with wires duck taped around his legs and arms.

its the same reason that i went as rambo to a "army" themed club night and didnt wear my kevlar and full battle rattle.
As for the costume the stand out features of most admech is red robes /hood .big cog symbol / and those mech arm things. and bionics . to be honest you just look like some kid from "the tribe" tv show..

The problem was you were not dressed bogan enough like the rest of the inhabitants of redcliffe.

Have you checked out the camping store in the city? It has much better stuff than the one at Kippa Ring.

Masked_One- take a look at photos of trouble makers in crowds from all around the world, you'll find the majority of them are wearing masks of some sort, hence the reaction of the older people and police. I know you were not there to make trouble but how did the rest of the crowd know that? These days people will always assume the worse and police, unfortunatly, need to assume the worse.

She may have a good body, but I hate two-toned bro-ho hair, and will discount her for that period, even kinda kills the amazing costume. However Dig the fething Commisar Chops!

I do believe that young lady is held up as the Gold Standard of female 40k cosplay. I mentioned SOB to my gf once as kinda a joke and next thing I knew she's looking up pics online and gak. I think I may end up having to put one together for her. She is big into Halloween constumes and gak. I'm just trying to figure out where in the hell she could wear such a thing. She's really hot so could pull off just about whatever the hell she wants, but still....

I might do it just to do it. Was thinking of lost-foam casting the shoulder pads in aluminium just to do it.

The problem is that your not in a recognizable costume so all the police saw was a grumpy adloescent who wants to hide his face in public .
not someone in a pop culture costume or somthing that screams dress up !
i would suggest you ether wait untill you have finnished the costume to a recognizable level .or only wear it at events/ conventions or work on your displacement field /power armour first so that when the police do get trigger happy you get your armour save...
