Guys relax , i dont think pipboy is trolling at all. Lets look at the facts:

a) does it fit under the seats? people say no.

b) does it fit in the over head compartment? people say no.

c) then where does it go? into the plane's luggage area. And pipboy is right ,
a large flat surface like that is always placed at the bottom of other luggage weighing average of 60 lbs PER stack.

So is he really trolling to say PACK cannot withstand those weight?

Think about it.

He might be coming off as a little aggressive but he's not trolling. The bag does not work as an airline bag. Sure, it has the same quality that the rest of the BF bags have, but it aint for traveling up and down the coast.

Which is really freaking unfortunate because I am one of those people who bought one thinking that it was.

Let me edit this real quick. I have bought a lot of stuff from BF and will continue to do so as I need it. The bag is solid, will keep your troops safe, but it is NOT that great for airline travel.

Unfortunately there just aren't a lot of bags that are going to be good for traveling around the country with mech armies.

If you don't mind me asking, I'd love some more information on your experience:

What airline and type of plane (how many seats across each row and in what configuration) did you try to get it on?

Did the flight attendants see you try to get on the plane with the bag and did they say anything to you?

Once you got on the plane and tried to put it under the seat and in the overhead bin and it didn't fit, what did you do then?

As a point of reference: I've travelled with Sabol's Army Transport Platoon (10"x14"x9") on regional aircraft (Bombardier Dash8). The underseat space doesn't fit more than a large purse or a briefcase / notebook bag. The Army Transport fit snugly under the seat taking up the full height. It is too bulky however, to go into the overhead bins, as the overheads on these craft do not accept full size luggage. (Normal carry on sized luggage goes into the hold).

PACK432 is 12"x16"x7.5" would probably fit under the seat if you put it on its side, though it may encroach into your neighbour's storage space. The overhead bin is out though.

Considering that you can hear the luggage rattle around in the hold, I would not trust ANY case other than Pelican to check luggage.

You try and take a 720 on anything smaller than the CRJ200 and prepare to check your gear. To be perfectly fair to Romeo, here is no way he could reasonably be expected to do more than he did as far as contacting the airlines and getting dimensions from them. Short of getting onboard all these airframes and physically trying to fit his gear into all the possible spaces (a ridiculous expectation that no one who lives in reality could expect) here is no way to tell what will fit and what will not because the volumes are odd shaped/toatlly misrepresented. The airlines, in quoting those numbers to the guy, shafted him dead in the pooper just like they have been shafting travellers for years. I have seen this with my own luggage time and again.

I would order from battlefoam .... If they would cut custom sheets to fit my sabol case .... im not going to pay an extra few hundred bucks for an army bag etc, but 20-30$ for 2-3 sheets is perfectly fine .... stupid sabol being like 1" more in a dimension .... *grumble*

Was a delta flight to FL. Two seats on one side and three on the other. As to the actually 'type' of plane I'm not sure. I actually don't fly much because as nerdy as it sounds a lot of my cross country trips are for 40k. I am not a flight newbie, I just don't often travel with anything worth 1000+ dollars that I plan on having to check into baggage claim.

The flight attendants didn't say anything as I was trying to board because I am sure they just eye balled it and had other things going on.

When I got to my seat it was clear it wasn't going to fit. I tried the over head on both sides and under the seats on both sides because the under seat stowage area on the other side 'looked' a little larger. Still no joy. So I flipped on the 'call the stewardess' button and waited.

After most everyone else was seated the attendant came over and after some discussion and debate I was allowed to stow my army in the front of the plane.

Basically because I'm a chamer but I would not want to risk the safety of my army on my social skills each and every flight.

Was this the 720? Assuming that 432 has no problems re: stowage?

I have semi OT question , i travel via airplane very often and i have never seen the bottom of the seat having space.

Dont they usually keep flotation device under there? or the foot rest are also folded underneath no?

The only time i ever seen the flotation devise not located underneath was on Alaskan Airline , which the devise = the seat.
I actually LoL'd till the plane lifts into the air and i can see the propeller shaking then i started to pray -_-

Most airlines have the seat as a floatation device Luna. Delta, American, Qatar, Emirates, Continental, Jet Blue, Jet Lite, Air India, PBA, and everything else I have ever flown on (and thats a lot!) use the seat as a floatation device.

But being able to fit stuff under the seat in front of you is a toss up.

Yeah, this was the 720.

I hope the 432 has no issues since I also purchased one of those after my return of the 720 wasn't allowed. (which might have been dumb on my part but at this point I've got some BF trays and I do need something attempt to safely transport them in)

It's not about the airline, it's about the FLIGHT. Flights which have a significant over-water component are required to have the inflatable vests; flights which don't can use the seat. (Those vests have weight, which adds up, so airlines prefer not to have to include them where water "landings" are effectively impossible.)

Really? That makes some sense, but I have never seen a PFD of any sort under the seats, and the vast majority of my flying has been transatlantic or US to India. Just seatcushions as far as what was readily available at the seat, no inflatables. I do a lot of helicopter flying from shore ot ship, over two hundred flights in the past several years, and THEY have the inflatables, so I am intimately familiar with the vests of which you speak.

Point not being whether the inflatable vests were in a different part of the aircraft to be passed out after a successful water landing or anything else. Point being the seat cushions were designed to float, and we were instructed to use them as such should need for floating arise.

What I'm pondering now is getting a 432 and a PACK Plus, instead of the 720. If I take them as my 2 carry-ons, I shouldn't have any issues, and my clothes can ride in the cargo hold. Now if only the 432 got a "refresh" to allow it to attach to the PACK Plus.... *hint*

My thoughts exactly.

I'm a fan of my Portable Warfare carrier. The Sergeant is cheap and is able to fit most of my armies. With the exception of my Imperial Guard. It is compatable with the Blu Foam and the foam for Army Transport. I usually don't fly with my army though as I prefer the scenic route from Florida up there.

Has anyone tried a gate check? It's like a hybrid of carry-on and check. I'm not sure which airlines offer it, but essentially you can 'check' your baggage at the entrance to the plane (on the jetway or tarmac, either way) and it goes into the hold. After the flight, it is delivered either right to the tarmac or the jetway (either way). Still travels in the hold, but doesn't go through baggage claim. I know that Delta does this, but I don't know about any others. Since it goes through airport security, you also skip the TSA inspection for checked baggage.

As a side note, if you have a bag akin to the Division or Motorpool- that allows for trays to be placed side by side- they will fit battlefoam standard trays with minimal effort. I suppose there is some benefit to having soft sides.

I have a question about the battlefoam products and this seems like a good place to ask. I'm looking at the Pack 432, and the custom cut trays for an Eldar army. However it looks like the templates for Wave Serpents and the new Fire Prism/Nightspinner don't take into account the forgeworld MKII upgrade kits. Is this something that could be easily rectified with a knife and some time? Or am I going to have to design my own trays?

On a slightly related note I've also magnetised the grav tanks, has anyone traveled with rare earth magnets in carry on?

Chrysis,

If you're paying for a custom tray already, just send them a trace. It's what I did for my custom storm ravens.

See the information here: http://battlefoam.com/pages/custom_trays.php

I was specifically thinking of the already available Eldar pack for the 432 that has more than enough room for everything I'd be including in my army with the exception of the new bits sticking out of the grav tanks. I'd rather avoid having to design a custom tray if someone else has already done all or most of the hard work. Of course, if doing the hard work is the only option left then I'll do it.

No issues so far on domestic flights within the UK (many) nor international between UK and Australia (via Dubai, once including return)

Every time I travel. Never had an issue with those; it's large hunks of resin (read: Forgeworld stuff) that prompts a little extra curiosity, not a few magnets).

That's good to know. It's just that the last time I checked in for an international flight the list of prohibited items included magnets without any qualification. I was wondering where the line was drawn given that fridge magnets are OK.
