What is best in Warhamz?

To roll dice, move models and hear the lamentations of your opponent.

But seriously I think the question is crap.

It should be stated like.

What will you scarifice/do to win.

Nothing
Some Fluff
All Fluff
Rules Exploit
Be TFG

Also no cupcake option. Polls Closed due to tactical genius.

No. You do.

The only alternatives to playing to win are playing to lose or playing to draw, and you don't do either of those because you are human.

DispatchDave wrote:I play simply to enjoy myself

Thereby implying that 'enjoying' oneself and 'playing to win' are mutually exclusive.

I think it should be changed.

I 100% play to win. Though I could care less if I win or lose, so long as I have fun.

So, I don't know what to vote for.

I'm 50:50.

I'd rather a really tight, close game than a whalloping either way.

Close games are always more fun.

@ HBMC - It is entirely possible to play a game simply to enjoy watching events unfold, though I would accept that these will normally be scenario driven battles rather than pick up and play / campaign games.

Somewhere in between 50% win and 75% win. If it's close or I'm losing, I'll challenge rules I'm unsure about, and I'll double-check hazy special rules, but if I'm sweeping, I don't bother, and may even try to point out obscure things my opponent can do. A close game is far better than a sweeping game.

I play 100% for fun. It is a game.

but the response was more like the 50/50 response. I still like to play in close games, and win or lose I am entertained.

I have a ton more fun with a game decided by the last few models than one where I ROFLSTOMP my opponent. Or get stomped for that matter. But I don't think anyone enjoys getting their teeth kicked in.

There is nothing like a good close game that comes down to the wire. Though winning is fun, I feel bad when my opponent gets utterly destroyed, and get a little upset when my dice hate me (which is most of the time).

75% fun, 25% win. If I had more chances to play, I might develop a 50-50 "tournament mode" that kicks up the competitive side if prizes and glory are on the line, but at this point any game is a good game, considering how rarely I get to put models on the table. Playing only to win before you have the skills to do so is enjoyment-suicide. Even once I get some experience under my belt, I doubt things will change. Sure, I like to win (who doesn't?) and if you're not trying, there's little point in playing, at all - I just don't flip a if I don't come out on top (with the caveat that I want to play, ergo getting tabled on turn two would still put a significant damper on the experience ).

Glory (aka bragging rights) maybe, but I've frequently won something at a tourney and turned around and given away the prize to whoever came in last, or the youngest player, or whatever. I just want to play, and have gotten to the 'good enough' stage that I win most of my games.

I like the trend I see in responses, the phrasing IS good because it is not bulletproof, the discussions are interesting caused by the clarification of "fun" vs "win". Some thoughts of a profile/description of sorts (yes, I think about this stuff too much):

100%W The Conan quote is beautiful. Think of yourself being born in the wrong time and to crush your enemies unfortunately may have to be reduced to games, hostile takeovers, driving better/faster cars than them and having affairs with members of their family. I tell you, you need something done with brutal efficiency and quickly, these are the folks you will be looking for. They have a place in the world and don't be stupid and offer yourself as a victim to them... they will oblige (you deserve it for being a sap!). Most likely bought the army painted because "life is short" (or got it for a steal from some fool on ebay) and the optimization had been confirmed by some suitably like-minded or egg-head person because we do not want to start on the wrong foot. The "win" is the reason in life to succeed and to shoot for second is to decide to be a loser. Behavior in life or during a game is not different, they are "always on their best game".

For the more competitive (75%W/25%F), "win=fun" and refuse to think of it as possibly a separate thing of "I win a game and this is where I feel most of my success". Your allegiance to your army could be directly related to how it performs, you may have a couple to cover the bases for any rules changes. You make and paint your army because you are going to be the best in all aspects of the hobby. You may get the occasional model painted master class for you to add more punch to the visuals but overall you made your army. You like to swap winning strategies with peers but really want to have a go at them and show yours are superior. A crushing victory over someone confirmed as a "decent" player makes for a good day confirming some strategies are working correctly.

For those who like a challenge, "close game either way = fun" (50%W/50%F). These people tend to change their goal during a game if they are winning too well like "I will make my new objective to take out his command squad only with normal troops" or something more challenging. Or if losing, "I will make my new objective to stomp his command squad with all I have". Not a tactically sound way to play, but certainly entertaining for a stylish ending. The style of play, the give and take, the not knowing can be a gift in it's self. A predetermined outcome after the first round of fire is a letdown. You make a good "playing class army" fully painted, looks good and the occasional leader or veteran will get extra detail. Forge world are considered or you will make your own custom details and conversions.

For the more fun loving: the themed army, with stories and fluff and a real challenge sometimes to get them to put up a good fight for the more optimized armies. You guys live breath and eat your army and know it better than anyone and play it to the fullest with what you have because you know them cold (25%W/75%F). These are usually the prettiest and most different armies one could find. It is a good day when someone asks if they could pick up and get a better look at one of your models or the comment "wow that is cool looking". The rest is details. The occasional win does lend some vindication for toughing it out. Whatever looks good is fair game to use, no effort or painful financial outlay will stop you from having that cool army (eventually). Customization tends to be the norm.

You are really here to socialize (100%F). Make people laugh. Have people like you. See cool things. Learn cool things. You improve your gaming and modeling skills if people appear unhappy with them. You particularly like games in teams. The more crazy things happen in a game the happier you are (the more random and goofy the army, sometimes the better). You are a regular at many hobby shops and may have a spot or storage space set aside for you. You always have cool stuff on the go but it can get a bit busy with everything you have as a work in progress. Your completed models are heavily converted or possibly unrecognizable from the original but may tend to play with thrown together models until the good ones are done.

Feel free to tear into this... I am a masochist so go for it...

I'm the 75% for fun, 25% to win category. As long as I get to use my favorite toys to do some damage, I don't mind if I win or lose that much. I do prefer neck and neck close games though.

Yes. As stated, I always play to win, no one PLAYS to lose.

I purchased, and am in the process of painting my army.

I built my army list from the ground up, starting from an all pathfinders army on first purchase, into the DAVU wave serpent spam that it is.

I make people laugh, I like people to have fun. I improve my gaming and painting skills if people don't like them.

I play alot of game teams.

I know my army inside and out, I can go toe-to-toe with other armies with my list, since I know exactly what I am capable of.

I like to win games, that is when I feel my most success.

I am certainly not TFG.

I play in every category except 50:50.

You can play to have fun, and you can play to win. They're not on opposite ends of some imaginary line, re-format the poll, and I will vote.

Perhaps actual choices instead of these non-sensical percentages that you whipped out of your rear end?

yeah, I'm a play-to-win gamer. The only reason I didn't pick the 100% option is that, to me, this implies that you can't have fun if you loose. Perhaps if it were rewritten like everyone else wants...

I would have to be in the majority and put my lot in with the 50/50 outlook. I always like looking at my opponents armies and checking out their conversions and paint jobs and stuff. The level of almost everyone's painting and modelling is going way up. Which is fantastic.

On the Saturday morning of a tournament with some nice prizes up for grabs, I'd have to be honest and say my attitude would fluctuate across the scale depending on stunning victories and crushing defeats. Also, when I came across more experienced gamers, who I knew, or had played before, my attitude would be either bolstered or tested. Despite what the dice gods and my ideas of "that might work" tactical planning, I never tried to play the role of the d!ck and screw people around on rule or something. It's always nice to win, and keeping that spirit, but maintaining a high level of sportsmanship to me is way more important. It is only a game, after all.

However, I've been to the odd gong-show tourney too. When everything is just out of control and the 4 games become 3, well 2 1/2, no one knows what's going on,the organizer, 'Wayne', his buddy, 'Garth', "wins" the prizes, 'shenanigans' are called, etc., those are the tournaments where I would just play to hang out and meet some new people. Competitiveness '0'. The drinking sessions afterwards were usually better because everyone had something the same to bitch about.

I found rather early on that if I went to a game or tourney intending to win, I generally could. The flip side is that I found going out to win a great way to add stress and annoyance to the day. By the same token, I could just got to goof around and I'd be good to go.

I've just found that I don't like how I get when I go to win. The folks who play with me don't seem to be able to tell the difference, which is good, but I know I can. To that end, I generally just go to goof around and see what happens. I find it works much better for me.

I play about 75% fun, 25% to win. I'm still new to the hobby and haven't gotten many games in, so I go in with the expectation of "I may lose, but I will learn more about playing the game." And at the end of the game, I always have a smile and a handshake ready for my opponent, because a game's a game, and I'm there to have fun.

Ouze on GW: "I'd like to be like, hey baby, you're a freak but you just got too much crazy going on, and I don't hook up with bunny boilers. But then Necrons are going to come out, and I'm going to be like damn girl, and then next thing you know, it's angry sex time again.

It's complicated."

I don't take lists that are necessarily any good, I just take things I think are cool and hope for the best! sometimes it lets me win, other times i get owned completely, as long as I have a laugh playing the game I don't care.

Poll options do seem a little biased against people who like to win...... what is wrong with winning and having a good time at the same time? You can play to win and also play so that both you and your opponent have a good time.
