i'm more in the multiple prizes for different categories camp. while i agree you shouldn't have a 2nd or 3rd place in any category (like second best painted or second most sportman-like), spreading the prizes around spreads around the good feelings. giving it all to the guy who happened to simply win the most but could have been the biggest douchebag and fielding an unpainted proxied army is not going to get you repeat players.

Is coming in 2nd or 3rd at a tournament considered mediocre now? Wow, that's harsh.

I used to play a CCG and was active in tournaments. Getting something for winning wasn't why I played. I played for the satisfaction of winning. I liked that the top 3 people got at least something, though. I generally preferred a trophy or plaque over more cards. I had plenty of stupid cards.

Ahem... while I enjoy winning, I wouldn't describe the sensation of tournament victory as "glory."
Anyway, I have recently come to decide that trophies would be more fun to get than more models, particularly since I now have 3000 points of Ogres that I won through tourneys and leagues last year. I can honestly say that I don't want any more models. At least until the new Necron codex is released.
A unique trophy from winning a tournament would be preferable.

The GW GTs only had a minimum of prize support for much of the early years, and yet somehow they were really great events.
I got about $150 (?) in stuff for a category win at the last Baltimore GT, and given the choice of that or the trophy, I'd hand back the loot. I mean, I have $150 to buy stuff. It's just a nice gesture on top of the real reward -- the win and the trophy.
Having said all of that, The Mechanicon will have a TON of loot (see our photos from last year) and lots of people will be rewarded. Oh, and we have nice unique trophies too.

As I think about it, a trophy that could double as terrain would be cool (have a "special rule" to go with it if the person uses it at the FLGS). Everyone can use terrain and they get a trophy too.

Love the ork pirate ships...
I must admit, those trophies are pretty cool. I agree, a trophy that has a fuction (terrain, holding a cool mini) definitely adds value.

Have to disagree with your interpretation of the OP. It isn't so much that third place is mediocrity in general, just third of 10. If you are giving out 16 prizes in a tourney of 30 people, you are awarding the mediocre.
That being said, I have no problem rewarding mediocrity. I like the idea of giving best painted, best general, best overall, ect. No matter how large or small the tourney. Call me a product of no child left behind, but that is my opinion. As to prizes/trophies/bragging rights, if I have to pay to play, I will expect something if I preform well. I really don't care what the prize is, because I came to play the game and am mostly interested in bragging rights, but it ought to be something. I do have to say that I really like the Miniature Trophy combos- they're frelling sweet.

The WFB trophies incorporate a layer of velcro between the base and the models, so you can pop off the Forge World giant for a game if you like.) The bases are hills done by GF9/Battlefront, the 'scrolls' are greenstuff. Best painted was made out of a mystical material called 'pink foam' that can be turned into damn near anything.
I'm torn on which would be cooler- the terrain trophies or the playable Forgeworld models.
Very cool, Mikhaila

In general I agree with always having multiple prizes; people can get discouraged more easily with winner take all.
I tend to concur that with a dozen or less people you probably just want Best General and Best Painted, or just 1st and 2nd if you're using an aggregate score combining the two. Giving 2nd or 3rd place prizes in multiple categories doesn't make sense unless you've got more than 40 or 50 people.
