They are more than just special rules and abilities granted to another unit. They can, oftentimes, control the board. If your enemy rightfully fears one of these units, be it Swarmlord, Ghaz or any of the others, that character has an upperhand in the game. Before you even set your models on the table, the opponent is grumbling, "Man, Ghaz on a Waagh!, don't wanna deal with that." Or, "Mephiston shielded by those terminators and with FNP, how am I going to pry him out without letting him into my ranks?" These questions can change the opponent's battle plan and can certainly change the tempo of the game.

Ghaz did it here. You didn't want to get assaulted by Ghaz with a 2++ accompanied by a unit of Burnas. Who would? But simply having that model on the field influenced the game. I love when units can do this. They are so much more than some people realize.
Ghaz has a lovely threat range w/Waagh available and in a Battlewagon, too - just over 28".

Dawn of War is pretty hard on Tyranids, as it breaks up the "little bugs screen the bigger bugs, who counter-charge" mechanic that keeps them going.

The DoW isn't so bad if you're running a Tyranid army that can reserve. Shep here on Dakka builds some particularly nasty Tyranid lists from my understanding.

If I were to ever start Tyranids, I would start with this thread. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/306204.page

Believe me Dash, Shep & I have had some lovely Tyranid conversations. But while you can try to build a Reserves-based list, given the FAQ rulings on Spore Pods, you're forcing yourself into a single strategy (you can't deploy outside the pods when it would be advantageous). Plus, one of Shep's strategies (Prime w/Warriors in pod for better shooting/absorbing S8 shots) is now illegal.

Hrm....I'm not familiar with the Tyranid FAQ or spore pod ruling. One of my local friends plays Tyranids (for humor, check my real life batrep linked in my signature; all my friends are imaginary and I only have haters... ) and I'm converting a Carnifex into a (forget the name - the 4 legged carnifex with the BFG).

From what I've seen, being able to deliver stealers simultaneously with zoeys is threatening, as trygons popping up in the back field while hive guard bear down from the other side. Then again, I don't play as nids, only against them!
