I'm not going to beat around the bush - echidnas do plenty of that, and you don't hear about all of these dogs getting attached to echidnas. That's because echidnas are very friendly, and as long as you stroke them from back to front, you're fine.

When I was a kid we had a Rottweiler. I grew up around her and so did my brothers and sisters. She was very protective of my family and never hurt anybody. The only time she would get worked up is if somebody were to try to come in our back yard without permission. We had to tell her who could come in and who was okay.

Rottweilers are very good pets. They will protect your family and are good for kids to play with.

Now, that being said. Do not be an idiot and buy an adult rottweiler thinking it is going to be a good pet. With these types of dog breeds, you have to raise them yourself. They will eventually come to love and adore you and do anything you ask. Just like any other dog. The only difference is these dogs WILL protect you and not run scared if gak happens.

Yes absolutelt correct dreadwinter! I agree with you, my family had a Doberman and he was awesome and very protective, he would snarl and bark like they do until you just said the word friend to him and he'd be fine! you can't buy that sort of loyalty, but I would never introduce an adult dog into my home wth children I think that's asking for trouble no matter what breed it is! even a poodle!

Heavens forbid that a person would think that 'because I want one' isn't really a brilliant reason to own something that might one day, out of the blue, just decide to rip a child's face off. There are other breeds to choose from that are also big and loyal, and are less likely to do that, statistically speaking.

That and really, I've seen many people with what a number of people have called "dogs bred for fighting" and they've been some of the smartest or just nicest dogs I've been around.

...And people who have been maimed by a 'family pet' probably thought that too. Funny how it always seems to be the same types of dogs, isn't it? You rarely hear of a Golden Retriever flipping out and ripping someone's kid apart.

Have you raised, been brought up around and or frequently been with people that own a number of any of the "dogs bred for fighting" which ever those may be?

I grew up on a council estate in the North-East of England, so yes. The large numbers of chavvy morons who live in places like that seem to be fond of Staffordshire Bull-terriers, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers etc.

It's stupid owners that buy dangerous dogs.

Fixed. Some breeds of dog have been bred to be be aggressive, powerful and therefore, dangerous.

Albatross, you forget that the main reason that people buy violent and aggressive dogs is because they are violent and aggressive, and thus serve as an excellent source of home defense. You have to be fething flying rodent gak crazy to break into a home with a Pitbull or a Doberman vigilantly guarding the front door. You aren't always awake and at the ready with your shotgun, the police take an incredibly long time to respond to home invasion calls or alarms (in most cases), and other methods of home defense are simply silly or unreliable. I've never seen a case of successful breaking and entering where the owner of a home had an aggressive dog for a pet.

Sure, you take risks with such an animal, but this aspect alone makes them absolutely invaluable. Proper training should definitely be required, as should knowledge of the inherent risks of owning such an animal.

Banning potentially dangerous things is no way to protect yourself (or your child) from harm. There are numerous other things that could cause the same general result, and as such, you're being incredibly paranoid and irrational.

Absolutly. People think dingoes are baby killers as well but thats far from the truth. You can get a pet Dingo here and they are brillant dogs. They maybe harder to look after then other dogs but they are extremely loyale and nice dog. Its how you look after a dog.

Yes I'm aware of that you need to raise them young but some people can't stand the sight of dingoes because of that story even when it was the parents fault not completly the dogs.

Dingoes are actully becoming indangered due to breeding with other breeds of dog and are needing to be looked after by people to insure the species continues.

Not really. Since the sale, breeding and ownership of 'dangerous dogs' have had more strict controls applied to them in the UK, the number of incidents involving those types of dogs have decreased. As those particular breeds make up the overwhelming majority of dogs involved in attacks, the overall number also drops. I haven't seen a pitbull in the flesh for years - guess what? I feel safer. I'm not interested in anything else.

But yeah, I get it - American ideology doesn't encourage banning things and you're just obeying the dogma. Good for you.

Truth. I read about a guy who was being attacked by his pitbull - it had hold of him by the arm (it bit THROUGH the bone! ). He punched it in the head over and over again but it didn't work. Eventually, his wife grabbed a kitchen knife and he stabbed it a few times. The dog didn't even notice! He had to tell his wife to find a bigger, sharper knife - she handed him it and after stabbing it another 10 times it eventually let him go. It didn't die though. They had to put it down. They are ridiculously impervious to pain.

Harr harr, you have to come up with some lamer America remark. Sounds a bit off that you have to wipe out entire breeds of animal to feel safe, or just by banning anything that you hear sounds dangerous, I mean, you did have to put padding on lamp-posts even, them being so viciously dangerous to people not watching where they're walking.

You have a point. I have been attacked by several poles in my lifetime. When you least expect it they just leap out at you! Curse you easily avoided poles!

I know this is silly but I swear a few years ago a power pole knocked me out when I was running! one minute i'm looking hot and sweaty, the nxt minute i'm on my back and my face hurts! if it wasn't stuck in the ground I swear it would have 'gone' me again...

Well, back on topic, a dangerous dog will keep the post away. I'm not sure if it's the same deal with poles but it sounds a good bet.

i do know my Lab Oscar is the godfather of poles, everyone we walk past he marks as his territory and not once while he's been with me has one tried to attack me again! pretty good I reckon, reason to own a dog? I think so, and a little on topic a dog will also keep the meter man away! Osc probably wouldn't do anything but he's big and black and has a massive deep bark (like barry white) and people see him and don't come near :-(

Given the choice, of using my bare hands, or having a knife, I'll take the knife...
