I am just going to vent here! I am the owner of a large black lab cross and he's awesome, you couldn't ask for a more loyal companion, obedient, smart, protective, and follows me everywhere (and I mean Everywhere!) and I was just on youtube looking for some cool lab vids and clicked on one and it turns out to be a bloody american pitbull attacking a poor lab! the lab just tries to get away but the damn dog just keeps following it and grabbing it's throat! everyone just shreiks and tries to hit the pitty with a chair but no one really does anything, it made me feel so sick! and someone was callous enought o just stand there and film someones mate getting attacked! disgusting I think, but why do people feel they need to show the world? it's not cool it's cruel! that's someones pet and now thay can watch it being eaten forever, how wonderful for them! i'm no 'hater' when it comes to breeds but some dogs just are more actively aggressive than others and as such shouldn't be off leash roaming, my favorite breed is the doberman but if i ever own one I'd at least bring it up as best I can and certainly not let it run free. I know some people even on dakka are going to be riled but I don't want my young cousins and friends kids looking for stuff and seeing this kind of stuff,ahhh I hate seeing stuff like that I can't control or help! I feel sick still, sorry to vent my feelings but I just needed to see if anyone else hates things like this!

Some people have a really warped sense of right and wrong, unfortunately the internet gives them the ability to distribute stuff like what you described online. I've volunteered at an animal shelter in the past and have seen firsthand the results of events like that not a pretty sight.
I'm also a pet owner myself I've got two great yellow labs.

Why do people post videos of happy slapping? And have you seen the shot pit boss? it is about a reformed criminal working it pit bulls. I beleive there is no truly aggresive breed. only aggresive dogs raised by bad owners.

Thanks for sympathising with me guys, some people are just wasting our air! and i agree with Garret, any dog can be aggressive it's just how they are raised by mindless people who just want to have a 'tough' dog, it isn't cool to say you've got a pitbull or rotti and it's done this or that, seriously one of the most aggressive dogs I ever saw was my parents australian terrier, the only difference is it's not big or powerful enough to attack a large dog but he was still put down because he was nasty. I think the owners of dogs that do stuff like this should be charged and or jailed, it's no use blaming the animal as they are just instinctive, I know recently in nsw two mastiffs tore a ladies arm off in her back yard after going through her fence! but i've digressed again, the whole point isn't to blame dogs or anyone but to question why these mindless jerks feel that something so hurtful and violent is actuall y fun or cool, and I can reference happy slapping here too as this kind of behavior is also seen as 'fun' in my eyes it's still assault and it's even more damaging to someone's mental health when it's never going to be gone completely, 16 years ago I was gang bashed in my town and still bear the mental scars today, thank god they didn't film it. we need to change the laws or put tougher people on to judge them, no form of real life violence is ever right to be called entertainment where people are effected, whether it be towards a dog, adult,child,

There ARE breeds of dogs that are more aggressive than others - they are bred that way. They are also bred to be powerful, muscular and to have great jaw strength. These dogs aren't suitable domestic pets, and people shouldn't be allowed to own them. There are too many stupid morons who want to own these powerful, vicious dogs because they see them as a status symbol, as well as a weapon.

Slightly different, but it annoys me when people submit videos to shows like You've Been Framed and their toddler is very obviously about to get hurt, but instead of removing the danger like any responsible gaurdian, they carry on filming!!!

Back on topic Nerdfest that is really horrible to witness something like that and I know it must have been distressing.

Sadists exist. It's a simple fact of life that some people revel in the infliction of pain. Venting, and idle, toothless threats don't really do anything to cull this sect of the population. What you should honestly do is work on accepting the fact that humanity, as a whole, is fethed up. This will help to relieve some stress, and save the energy exerted on what is ultimately a futile campaign.

Labs are great dogs. The Weiner Legions recognize their greatness. They will be set high in the New Order when the the Weiner Legions begin their enlightened regime.

I've had a pit bull, but raised it like a normal dog. Usually it is the owner not the breed, but you have to recognize their proclivities and capabilities. He was gentle but did interesting things like eat the door and do a standing leap over the fence whenever he felt like it. He did stop a rottweiler from attacking me once.

I was given one as a pet. The girl told me it she got it from someone giving them away in front of a target and he was supposed to be a lab puppy ironically. But I've never bought a purebred anything. We get rescue dogs and begging strays only.

Heavens forbid people like the way the dogs look, or would like a big loyal dog. That and really, I've seen many people with what a number of people have called "dogs bred for fighting" and they've been some of the smartest or just nicest dogs I've been around. Have you raised, been brought up around and or frequently been with people that own a number of any of the "dogs bred for fighting" which ever those may be? It's stupid owners that equal dangerous dogs. Again, sorry if I don't like the thought of "Yer lets go and snatch up from their owners and wipe out all them dogs, becuz some of them are dangerous"

Aesthetics is one thing, macho posturing is another.

A lot of it is to do with poor breeding and how they are raised, but some people get certain breed on the basis of their fiercesome reputation.

Those people are idiots. If someone is getting a dog, just so they can mistreat it and make it kill other dogs for profit, they're absolute crap. We had a hastily and argualbly ill prepared Dangerous Dogs Act rushed through Parliament c1994.

It was after a series of incidents with American Pit Bull Terriers iirc. The cherished members of the family savagely attacked young children. These were not fighting dogs but pets attacking the owners children in some cases.

Yes the problem is with the owners very often like I said, but if you want a large good looking dog that eats anything, fond of children, there are plenty of other breeds to choose from.

Aesthetics alone is not a good reason for choosing a breed for a pet. I would love a lab again but would be unable to provide the exercise the breed needs. You have to consider the dogs temperament and ones' own lifestyle and wether they are compatible.

Pitbulls are actually quite intelligent.

I disagree with destroying entire breeds based on shallow paranoia. It's like parents who freak out at content on the internet... it's still your job to protect your kids, regardless of what else you can try to blame. You don't improve your quality of life by destroying the lives of others.

You don't really do much for the quality of life of a family that has had their 3 yo mauled by someone else's pitbull.

While I am also dislike the idea of destroying entire breeds of dog, there is a case for discouraging the breeding of some types.

You are correct, I do nothing for the quality of life of a family that has nothing to do with me. I feel for them, but planes fall from the sky and earthquakes/floods/landslides happen.

Obviously I think that dangerous animals should be treated as dangerous animals, and not walked in public without muzzles (if at all), or kept by irresponsible parents. Some parents are dangerous to their kids too. I feel for the kids. I feel for the parents, where relevant. If someone is 'walking' a dangerous animal that attacks a child in the street, it is just as if he was carrying a bomb with a random timer. It might never go off. That 'someone' is nevertheless to blame, and he should face the consequences. I'm basically just saying that animals can't be treated like a 'product recall'. What are supposed to be 'intelligent' humans can be held accountable - but sometimes it's just nature too.

I have a black lab and if some pit bull tried to attack her i would shoot the pit. Pit bulls are an OK breed of dog but if not trained correctly they are nothing but a menace to everyone or everything around them.

Actually if a pitbull came at you two you'd have a reasonable belief the PB could cause you serious harm or even death, and as such you can act accordingly. Thats helpful information.

Slightly different again, but it annoys me when people submit videos of one toddler kissing another at a wedding to shows like You've Been Framed, they are not in the slightest bit funny, yet about 20minutes of the the show seems to be dedicated to them!

Back OT, I own a staffordshire bull terrier, he is lovely, docile and a well tempered pet, however as he was not socialised properly as a puppy (we had him when he was nearly a year old) when faced with other dogs he becomes very aggressive. We of course take responsibility to prevent anything from happening, we walk him at times when we know there is very little other dog traffic, his lead and collar are made of ridiculously heavy duty leather with brass buckles etc.

We could say that he should be put down as he is aggressive, but as owners we take responsibility for the fact that he has a behaviour issue that we can no longer fully 'train out' of him, but we most certainly do not encourage. It is not the dog's fault per se, the staffie was in fact bred as a fighting dog. On the flip side, I have seen dogs of the same breed which have absolutely no problems at all with other dogs, these of course had the correct amount of socialisation as pups.

It is definately a factor of owners, not purely the dogs, that make the attitude of an animal.


Like someone in the thread mentioned before, if you are not willing to spend a large amount of effort training a dog to behave against an in-bred behaviour e.g. agressiveness, then you should consider choosing another breed, or indeed whether you can look after a pet at all...

Precisely. Being poorly equipped to defend your children (or beloved pets) is also your problem. Always carry a porcupine.

I know pitbulls have kinda been the 'target' dog for this post and I never wanted to 'hate' on a breed but I do agree that some breeds that have been especially bred purely for the purpose of hunting to kill animals or to be resilient to wounds and pain, these dogs should probably not be sold as pets to families, you can still have tough dogs if that's your thing, but choose one that's not so actively agressive, take the bulldog for instance, used to bait bears, it's strong can brawl if it has too but would rather just relax by the pool! and i suppose being cheeky you could probably outrun the short legged version, again, I digress but there are certain dog breeds that noone can refute that have a history of violent and unpredictable behavior not suitable for family or domestic life, this is not to say they should be banned but they should be monitored and used for the specific intent they were bred for and not just as status or a measure of how tough you are, a friend of mine actually has had two ptbulls and one got out of his yard when it was 8 month old and tore apart two sheep in a nearby property and he did bring that dog up as a good dog, part of the family, but they do have something inside them that is almost too animalistic in nature to truly trust, i'm not sayng they're bad they're just not my cup of muscle and rage.

Chows
bloodhounds
weiner dogs. Yes weiner dogs.
