This is probably my biggest problem with miniature wargaming in general. Way too many folks playing them fit the stereotypes way too closely. Liking plastic soldiers is no excuse for lack of hygiene or impulse control with the deep-frier.

40k is awesome.
I'm not emotionally invested enough into it to get mad at GW, I guess. I buy models when I want them and just play. I'm pretty sure I have the same attitude toward all of this that GW does. It's a fething game, not something to base an entire lifestyle around.
Take a breath... repeat after me... It's a game. There now. Don't you feel better?

Well, considering the time many people invest in the hobby between assembly, painting, basing, and driving/flying around to various tournaments and conventions, it's practically a lifestyle for some.

I like 40 or I wouldn't play it, or as someone above mentioned, I wouldn't complain about it either if I didn't like it.
The prices are what gets me these days. I almost can't afford to 'keep collecting.' Some armies, especially mech lists can cost you upwards of $1000 US. That's a bit much for me.

I would point out that there's currently an 18-page thread about people's worst experiences at a gaming store/ GW store going on in the Dakka Discussions thread. Maybe not 6 continuous pages of hate towards GW, but a lot of the stories there are about poor service at GW stores.
Magnalon wrote:Chibi Bodge-Battle wrote:It's the way GW treats their customers.
How does GW treat their costumers? I haven't had one bad experience either on the website, or in an official shop, outside of upselling, which they need to do to stay in business.
There are some real horror stories on the aforementioned thread about how some GW employees treat the customers. Granted, that's not the company itself and more of a case-by-case basis, but you'd be surprised at how many are there.
On the topic though, I really do enjoy 40k. Whether I'm winning or losing, or even just watching another game going on, it's always fun for me. And as much as I dislike the prices, I can understand why they are that high - the models they make are pretty high quality.
My only real gripe with GW (since I haven't set foot in one of their shops ever) is that they tend to not release models for certain units. That said, I did get complimented on my Thunderwolf Cavalry conversions, which were literally just a couple of Space Wolves glued on top of some Heroscape wolves.

Anyway, to continue my original post in this thread, I don't hate 40K. I really dislike GW, find a number of their business practices to be equal parts brain dead, mean spirited, nonsensical and even somewhat dubious (threatening staff for talking about Space Hulk? C'mon!!!), but this does not make me dislike 40K. I mean, I'm writing a campaign booklet right now for an upcoming series of games. I made myself learn how to correctly imbed pictures, do watermarks, backgrounds and all sorts of formatting shenanigans just to make it look good. I've written well over 100,000 words of material for the Dark Heresy campaign that I am GM'ing. These are all labours of love, and I wouldn't do them if I didn't like 40K. That said, my love of 40K only stems as far as the setting, miniatures and artwork (and anything produced by FFG). The 5th Ed rules can go feth themselves for all I care...

It's the redundant department of redundancy located in the corner of a circular hallway in a bureaucratic mess.
Jokes aside, I have yet to have a problem with GW. The local GW store has friendly staff, and they're not too pushy. I have never had them sell me something I mentioned I wasn't interested in.
Yes the models can be expensive, but look at other hobbies people have, such as video games $60+ per game, not to mention any and all the DLC, online subscription costs, game-system hardware, TV, Sound systems etc.... I have spent less money on GW products this year then I have for my phone payments or gas(petrol for you Brits), and my mini's will still be usable in years to come. So yes the prices may be a bit high to begin with, but if you think of how much time you'll spend with them(painting or gaming) the price is not that high.

I think we need to start a club. No Fatties Allowed! lol
All joking aside, I do find that I have a very difficult time relating to other 40K players. I probably come across as aloof or snobbish even, but what can I possibly talk to these folks about, outside of the game? "Hey, that's an interesting stain on your shirt. Which fast food restaraunt did that come from?" I'm fit, healthy, wealthy and by comparison at least, wise. Their worlds seem to begin at the gamestore door and end at McGreasey's Burger Mart.
Anywho, as to the OP's topic, I for one, love 40K, in particular the fluff. I do however, despise GW and see them as a necessary evil for keeping the game alive. I go out of my way to not purchase their products (see my sig link) as soon as those products become incompatable with my price/value ratio. Basilisks are complicated enough to build myself that they're still within the appropriate price point to me; Leman Russ's however, are not. So I build my own. When GW has alienated folks like me that have been with them since nearly the beginning (I count my rogue trader/white dwarf interst! lol) you've got to wonder why.
The negativity on the net towards them in general is mostly valid, imho. They're skull f*&^ing us monetarily for their shareholders gain; when they went public, they stopped being a company that cared about it's product. It's the name of the game; bad PR was sure to follow! The crazy price increases are actually visably reflected in their stock price:
http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/charts/chartdl.aspx?Symbol=GMWKF&ShowChtBt=Refresh+Chart&DateRangeForm=1&C9=2&ComparisonsForm=1&CE=0&DisplayForm=1&D4=1&D5=0&D3=0&ViewType=0&CP=0&PT=10
The more they increase prices, the lower the stock sinks overall; given the normal up and down swings. The past two days their stock has risen 2$ a share oddly; not sure what release news would cause that spike. When it falls to 4$ a share again, I'm padding my holdings, as I have faith that eventually, they'll start listening to those of us whining, and turn this ship around before it runs aground bankruptcy island.
And fyi for anyone considering buying in, be advised that they're worth almost nothing in liquid capital; the only way out of trouble for them is bankruptcy. There's zero hope of a sell off of assets, as their assets are inventory, and two tiny production facilities, one of which is using ancient equipment. If they go bellyup, no bigger game company exists to come in and buy them up, even to part them out; they've got no parts to sell....

Personally I LOVE 40K. I think Warhammer is one of the greatest inventions I have ever seen. It allows me to be a kid while at the same time dealing with very real Military strategies despite the fact that it takes place in a fictional universe. I love the fluff especially everything about the Imperium. When I first heard of Space Marines my first thought was, "Wow I can actually do an entire army of Spartans (from the video game Halo if you don't know what a spartan is)." This really appealed to me and I have been playing 40K ever since about 6 and 1/2 years ago.
My only complaints about 40K are the fact that while I do not in any way hate GW I do believe that their prices are a bit much. I do, however, understand why their stuff costs so much since they do effectively have a monopoly on 40K since they own the creative license and I buy their stuff anyway. (No I am not in anyway a fan of Ebay buying or any of that stuff but if at my local FLGS they do have an auction I might pick something up if its cheap enough) My only other complaint is that I'm not quite sure why GW chose to change the rules so much in 5th edition. I personally thought 4th edition was the best and most balanced of all the editions. 5th edition I think, personally, caters way to much to Gunline armies, MSU armies, and Mech armies, and CC armies are basically in terms of pretty much everything. (which unfortunately is my favorite army type to play)
40K is a great game and GW has a lot to be proud of I can't wait to finish my current 40K novel, I can't wait until the new GK codex comes out, and I especially can't wait until the movie comes out. I do however WISH VERY MUCH that they would do a full length live action Hollywood Warhammer 40K movie! I think that would be AWESOME!

I love 40k because no matter how slowed at first it seems to sink hundreds upon hundreds of dollars into pewter and plastic models the hobby serves or benefits the hobbiest on multiple fronts. On the practical end when it comes to painting with most, it trains you to have a steady hand and teaches you patience. It also inspires and encourages creativity. Then there's the aspect of playing the game with the minis. It teaches you to keep on your toes, and when building an army to maintain flexibility especially if you go against multiple different army types when you play against other people. On the practical end a boxed set of minis being $25 - $30 generally, isn't much in comparison to other things. In fact it's a far greater value. You get hours of entertainment when the same amount of money could be spent going to see a movie that you ended up thinking was a piece of hollywood crap because it probably was. With 40k you get several things that are priceless.
Of course GW upsells and they pimp the hell out of their flagship the Space Marines. This also greatly benefits all the people that don't like the SM armies. It keeps people buying SM's so even during those periods where other army types aren't selling near as much GW still has enough money on hand to keep those other armies in the game rather than being forced to get rid of them.

I love 40K because of, really, everything about it. Aside from the lore and gameplay itself, I find it fascinating that I can paint and give attention to every single one of my models, an attribute that is SO commonly overlooked in most games. you don't get that kind of experience and, I suppose, closeness with card games.
playing the game itself--albeit I've only played one game thus far--is completely interactive; YOU roll your dice, YOU move your units, YOU get to role-play even, if you wanted to.
the lore is just fascinating in-and-of itself. Tyranids are my favorite because of their silent mystery, and as a nerdy writing major, I love being able to use my imagination and build on the world of 40K that's been given to me.
it's really everything about the game that fascinates me. yeah, the prices are high, but that's what you get for playing a game that you, as the customizing god of your own army, are so involved in.
