After reading 6 pages of "I hate GW" posts, I just wanted to see who among you actually LIKES 40K?
I have been playing this game since 1991, and have several armies that I have put together over the years. In that time, 40K has become better and better in my mind. Now, not only do I get to play with little plastic soldiers, but I also get video games, books, and a MOVIE!!!
So, let's hear it!!! How many of you actually LIKE playing 40K? Tell us why!!!
And please, if you are only going to post "I hate GW" trash, there are a NUMBER of other pages on this site that would be a better place for you to spit your venom. I want to see POSITIVE posts for once!!!
Have at it gang!!!

I can still remember when a box of 30 Space Marines was $30.00. Now THAT'S old school! In fact, I started playing in the Rogue Trader days...yes, I am that old. Played Warhammer Fantasy for years before Rogue Trader even came out...

I do.
Outside of the fact that GW doesn't really put a whole lot of effort into their rules and makes tons of mistakes, why do people hate it?
Because it's a business that's trying to make money in a competitive digital world? Sure, some of the prices suck, but you can "counts as" quite a lot of stuff.
I honestly think the Fantasy prices are worse for a lot of armies. Just the mere fact that pretty much every army in Fantasy has hordes of characters that are worth a low amount of points, and 8thE encourages 2k+ point games is money in the bank for GW.
At least in 40K you can feasibly have a force consisting of low model count super Marines.

I like 40k. i recently took it back up after many many years away.
Yes the prices are not cheap but lets look it more reasonably:
GW are not some mega rich company that have high prices for the sake of it, they are a highly specialized company in a relatively small industry that run shops that take pretty small amounts of money per day and so need high margins to sustain the shops that we all like to go into.
Would we rather have GW go under?
You can buy the models cheaper online thanin GW and i do that now and then but i also do choose to go to GW and spend a little more as a way of saying thanks to guys in there for there help and advice and to keep the shop going.
The only real critisms i have on GW are that they need to back up there codex's with more models at launch and they need to reduce the price on the starter sets like AOBR and the army box sets to encourage more people to play the game.

If you will notice, I said in the first post that I just went through 6 PAGES of "I hate GW" trash...
On a site almost dedicated to Games Workshop/Warhammer/40K, you would think that people would be a little more positive about their hobby of choice. However, almost every post is "I hate this" or "I hate that".
I just wanted to see what people would post if I started a topic about ENJOYING 40K.
Now, I'm not stupid. People are entitled to their thoughts, and this IS the internet. People will do or say anything they want on the internet, just to say it.
However, I am just tired of the negativity on Dakka.
I just want to see some love for the game, that's all.

It's the way GW treats their customers.
Some seem to actually relish being screwed over by GW which is disconcerting.
I doubt there are 6 pages of continuous and unmitigated hatred towards GW anywhere on Dakka. I think you are just picking up a vibe and it feels that way. Which is understandable.
TBH Capn there are as many defenders of the faith than critics. You are just being rattled by negative comments is all. There is also a lot of unconditional and unrequited love.
The other thing is, people complain about aspects of GW. Doesn't mean that they hate everything.
We have a right to complain where GW suck at something but also to give credit where it is due.

I like 40k. Since I discovered Maelstrom, I even like the prices.
What I don't like is waiting half my life for GW to produce the models I was actually looking forwards to because they're too busy manufacturing more varieties of Space Marine. Or seeing GW do something that to me seems blatantly stupid, that seems to go unnoticed until it's too late to fix it.

How does GW treat their costumers? I haven't had one bad experience either on the website, or in an official shop, outside of upselling, which they need to do to stay in business.

Sorry but not going to get embroiled in thesearguments all over again.
Have said elsewhere that in personal dealings with GW I am more than happy with the staff I have encountered.
On the other hand some of the company policies and procedures are just ridiculous. I am obviously not alone in thinking they are shoddy. You know what the complaints are Manchu, you have been around gaming forums longer than I
It is at a corporate level that I start to have problems with GW. Yes I know they are a business etc but so are other companies that have respect for the customers rather than just seeing them as cash cows.
Like I said, there are things that GW do well and things imho they need to improve.

I love the 40k models, I also love the background (So long as it doesn't get too stupid... which it often does). GW I'm not sure about. I want to like them, but every time I see them raise their prices again or ban-hammer another fan site, it just makes me feel like they're evil and don't care about their fans.
But do I actually like 40k the game? ... hmmm...
Not really.
The only reason I play 40k is because it's the most popular and widely known rule-set for playing games with my miniatures. But that doesn't mean it's the best. Actually I think many of the rules are quite annoying, clunky, and the game is poorly supported. But then who's fault is that?

I like 40K. It's not the best game out there, not by a long shot. I spent the last ten years trying to champion "better" games. I signed on as a developer for one of them. But just because another game is "better," or different, or has a parent company that treats its customers like family, or whatever, doesn't mean that game is going to be for everyone. 40K has nicely accessible rules, well supported product, and an active gaming community in most populated areas. And for the little companies, it keeps sci-fi wargaming alive. Without 40K, a lot of the other games would disappear too.
Personally, I have a renewed interest in 40K because of my head injury. The "other" games are just too complicated for me to figure out right now. And by playing 40K, I actually get to play again, instead of just talking about how cool my favorite game is.

This. GW is a great company. Some people complain about how much models cost, but I spend so much time painting everything to my standard that it takes me forever to paint a box, and I don't buy very much at one time.

I'm in the same boat as gazelle, minus the head injury. Around the beginning of 4th edition I said a lot of crap about 40k and quit to promote other games and write my own to use with my 40k collection. As it turns out 4th edition 40k had a fair bit going for it, and 5th is even better.
I like the game but it's often a disappointment to see how little I have in common with other people who like the game.

I love 40k but that doesn't mean I have to like GW. They have come up with a great setting and a very enjoyable game, however they do treat their customers really badly. It doesn't help that as they have grown GW have got more obsessed with getting every thing possible from the customers at the cost of the game itself. Yes GW are here to make money but there are a lot of smaller companies that manage to make money without having to treat their customers badly.

I like GW and the 40k universe partly because of the style but also because of the depth of the info and back stories and the wide range of (mostly) well detailed models. We'd all like to be able to spend less on our hobbies but I think most reasonable people understand that GW is actually not there to pander to our every fancy; they're a business and they have to make money. I don't begrudge them their profits (and despite what some may think it would tremendously counter productive for them to start profiteering with regard to prices) especially if it means they keep producing good models and background material, and more importantly retain such a large and varied fan base that will embellish their universe to stupendous degrees.

In general larger fan bases are harder to cater for universally. Plus you have factor in that those who are dissatisfied are often much more vociferous; for all those who are unsatisfied and say so there are countless others who are perfectly happy with the range/rules etc. GW would be missing a trick (and be told so by their shareholders) if they didn't try and maximise their profits, and manipulating what people buy with things like rules and army composition is one of the best tools available to them. I believe their answer would (unofficially) be 'That's retail baby!' Equally though they have to walk a fine line to not alienate their core fans and some will inevitably fall on wrong side of that line.

I like 40K mainly for the IP. The game itself is much improved in 5th edition, but is still probably the crappiest game rules-wise that I play (Flames of War, Warmachine/Hordes, and now Fantasy Battles are all far superior).
Of GW themselves, it's important to realize that they are not a single monolithic entity. The heads of the company have changed several times in the last 20 years, and each team has had a different vision. Some of them (like the current one), I like. Others (like the decade's worth before that), not so much.
The prices don't bother me too much, since they are pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things. Hell, I could have bought at least two armies instead of any one of my guns, and probably a good half dozen for a year's worth of boat docking fees. What does bother me is how backwards GW is when it comes to the non-miniature side of the equation. They got the background and the miniatures down to a T (have you SEEN the new plastic skaven?), but they are still struggling when it comes to writing good rules, making timely updates and errata, or designing a decent campaign/tournament worth a damn. Hell, a single WM league has more thought and pure awesome injected in it than every GW campaign and tournament of the last 10 years combined.
