I know what you mean but hundreds of infantry squads is dull and not very useful.

At least that armoured company I listed has a good variety of models to paint and a good selection of stuff for building 40K armies from.

Hmm...

Not a Chapter of Marines - not by a long shot - but I'd say I've got... 3 Companies? 1.5 of Marines, half a company of Scouts, a Company of Terminators. Not a huge amount of tanks (5 LR's, 3 Preds, 2 Vindis, 2 Whirlies, 6 R-Backs). It's more infantry than vehicles.

My Guard/Inquisitorial/Ad-Mech forces are bigger, 6 45-man platoons (two of them Mechanised), 3 10-tank Russ Companies, a 10-tank Artillery Company, 10 Super-Heavies, 60 Storm Troopers in 6 Valks, a stack of Skitarii Squads (including converted Praetorians and so on), heaps of stuff. I've probably got about 400, maybe 500 models in that army. They actually out number my 'Nids!

An imperial guard ARMY can stretch into millions even tens of millions of men - made up of a few hundred regiments - so lets say one million men divided by - say 10 regiments (some will be all armour or all artillery ) your probably looking at one hundred thousand men per full strength infantry regiment .

Tank regiments can muster hundreds of standard leman russ's alone plus all special variants and support vehicles over and above that !

GW would love you to get either one of them !!!!

I'm pretty sure that there are no documented regiments with 200+ russes. Regiments are usually approx 12 companies and there are ten russes to a company. The only thing demanded of a regiments organisation is that it is roughly equivalent to other regiments in combat power - a regiment with "hundreds" of russes would be significantly over-size.

Full strength regiments are typically around 1000-1800 men. The Cadian 180th is given as an example in the Apoc book, at full strength they were approx 1200 men. The Elysian 181st was 2400 men but they were rated as "optimum".

How big a regiment is depends on the purpose of the regiment. An infantry regiment is going to be larger than a mechanized regiment, while an arty regiment is going to be smaller than either with more support vehicles.

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

The Tundra Wolves (chenkov's personal conscript tragedy) has aprox 100,000 "members" while the typical super heavy regiment has about 10 tanks, (3 companys of 3 'blades, one HQ) with, say a dozen men per tank, MAX, barely breaks 100. But I suppose that the super-heavy regement would have goofy sized support crews, so maybe 500 men/Tech Adepts?

Also, the Void Knights is a fully (100%!) painted Chapter, done collabratively, a company a peice with a 1st company, 5 battle companies (two people signed up for 5th company =), so one was presumed wiped out, and was only recently accepted back, with some akward questions, as they had already been replaced) a biker company (the old one went AWOL with his company, so I am working to fill it in) a tac company, an ass marine company, a devestator company, and the scout company... ALL PAINTED

I suppose I know people with 10 baneblade variants too, sooo...

I've got the full third company of Ultramarines, plus a few others here and there, working on a small dark angels army at the moment, not gonna bring that up to a full company. I will keep added to the Ultramarines though.

I own a black legion war band that's considerably above company strength. There's a company of black legion marines, and about half a company each of terminators bikers noise marines and berserkers. Something like 250 marines all together. Pics are in my gallery. Owning a company + support means you can field whatever the feth you want when you play a game of 40k

I have all the IA books as well. Most avoid giving a figure for regimental strength. Either they'll list the companies in the regiment but not the company composition or they'll list the company composition and not the regimental.

IA3 states 10,000 for a Tallarn Light Infantry regiment.
IA4 only has an Elysian Detachment.
IA5-6-7 never give regimental org charts for Kreig.
IA8 states 2400 for Elysians.
Apoc book states 1200 for Cadians.

(Wow I look pretty insignificant to other people)

Anyway I have:
1 battle company (6 tac, 2 assault, 2 dev, 1 command squad with chaplain and captain)
30 scouts
50 1st company vets (10 terminators)
10 honor guard
3 rhinos
1 LRC
1 predator
1 vindicator
4 landspeerders (1 storm)
6 bikes (1 attack bike)
3 dreads (1 normal, 1 ironclad, 1 ven)
2 techmarines with servitors (1 MOTF)
2 drop pods
all 10 chapter captains with master
2 librarians

so thats just shy of 200 marines

after that chuck in about 2 companies of guard, with vehicles and a small tau carde and that about sums it up

Since someone necro'd this thread (just a tad) I may as well post up what is in my current collection. Nowhere near the numbers of most people posting, though pretty quick buildup for me over past few months.

I kinda feel a little out of place posting in here and have deleted starts to a few ways to state my collection, but whatever, here goes:

40+/- Tactical Marines (including heavy/specials)
25 Assault marines (w/ JP)
12 Devestator (extra heavy weaps)
5 Assy Terminators
5 Honor Guard (w/ JP)
6 Scouts

1 Rhino (plan on couple/few more)
1 LRC
1 Razorback

2 Land Speeders MM/HF
1 Furioso Dread
1 HS Dread

1 Captain, JP
1 Captain, Terminator
1 Lib, JP
1 Lib, Terminator
1 Chaplain, JP
1 Astorath
3 Sang Priest, JP

Believe that is it for now, I suppose I could say I have a little over half of a company plus supporting units. Perhaps some day down the line I will spend the time and money and finish out the company. My main goal at the moment is completing a flexible WYSIWYG group of minis for a mainly JP army, however the masses of taccies and the dev squad do get used Oh, should throw in a note, most of the models are heavy BA theme/modeled though some are 3rd ed. ugly taccies and AoBR taccies; however, they are being painted to the theme of my chapter. Still need to think of a better name for them.

Current paint completion is around 15% I would say.

A personal goal if I do go for a full company would probably be a battle company seeing as how I am a bit closer to one of them vs going for an assault company (even though that is the theme of my current list(s) ).

I'm trying to continue my marines, Got entire 1st, 10th, 4th, and 7th company with loads of extra hq's heavy weapons and such as spares currently. also working on the vehicle pool which contains 6 preds, 3 vindis, 3 whirlwinds, 4 raiders, 5 razorbacks, extra rhinos, and still have more to build, thinking of making more razorbacks or rhinos form the spruces, also got 10 dreads finished so far.

Though thats still only 4 companies roughly out of a chapter, and some extras are built so i can use my codex marines as wolves or blood angels. rune priests etc.
