I think I have similar thought processes to you Tom. I would love a Jes Goodwin design book. Just going from your genestealer cult concept sketches I can see why you like Jes' work. I draw in the same way when I can be bothered.

Varied line weight, some shading and notations. They are like film design sketches, which is probably why his sculpts are so good. He's exploring the practicalities of the design rather than trying to make a pretty picture; which most illustrators do these days.

I find his sketches to be more interesting than the technically brilliant but souless stuff I see on conceptart and coming from all the major illustration sites.

John Blanche is crap.

If that's crap then I'd love to be able to paint crap like John Blanche does.

BL needs to release more art books in the same vein as the Gothic & Eldritch (Jes' book) and the Inquisitor Sketchbook (Johns book), as both offer great insights into certain ranges of miniatures and are great sources of inspiration, like Jes' Imperial Navy and Adeptus designs or the character designs John did for Inquisitor.

Heresy!!!

I totally love his sketchy/heaps of ink style of drawing and I thought he was one of the main people behind 40ks gothic feel.

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all.

Just received the Goodwin book from Death by Monkeys, WOW, it is awesome! Between the nostalgia of the aspect warrior sketches and the stuff I've never seen, I'll be mining this thing out for ideas for quite some time. Great stuff!

amen. you can say what you want about his style, but to say he's not an enormously talented visual artist and illustrator is just plain ig'nant.

if he does things with odd proportion or whatever the other hilariously amateur criticisms of his work are, you can rest assured that he most certainly has an enormous grasp--fundamentally and technically--of visual, anatomical, and spacial design concepts. in short, the guy is a professional artist and illustrator. he didn't get there by not knowing how to paint.

The Beatles were crap too!

Ice cream, also crap!

I think I have become immune to Goodwin and Blanche through decades of GW force-feeding us black and white sketches...

I happily paid $70 for the complete works of Boris Vallejo recently... he leaves the former in the shade.

Also, HR Giger... that man is wild!

The Gothic & The Eldritch is the only GW art book I've bought. It is excellent; I'm an Eldar fan from way back, but his other designs are wonderful too.

Blanche is excellent in a very different way. Atmosphere and feel are the main elements he brings. Jubear, he's the art director for GW from way back, and I remember hearing that a certain percentage of each codex and rulebook is always his stuff.

Avatarform- that's a great illustration (sorry!) of how tastes differ. I can't stand Vallejo. He's got some technical skills, but IMO his only good moments are when he's most closely imitating Frazetta. Giger is great, though.

Glad you like it, MajorTom! IMHO, it's one of the best books GW has produced. It's a shame that it's out of print and even more a shame that they haven't produced more books of Goodwin's artwork.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

Blanche's work is half-finished sketches with horrible proportions, splashes of ink/paint and a whole big bag of "WTF is going on here?".

I swear if I had a dollar for every time I squinted at his "artwork" and thought "where is his other hand/foot/leg?"

He's the Rob Liefeild of Game art.

Take that back!

Personally, I really dislike Blanche's work, always have. I like detail and consistency in illustration. That said, he's amazing at expressing atmosphere, and I have to grudgingly compliment him for that.

But calling him "Liefield" is cruel and beneath you. Blanche at least has original ideas, and can draw.

I love Jes Goodwin's design and would happily buy a book of his concept work, but only if he shared his notes. I like the art, but really enjoy hearing his thought process and reasoning behind his final decisions.

i love the Blanche of the old days...
his finished pieces were tiny, and so full of perfect little details...
the sketchy style he has shifted to in the last decade is not for everyone, but it doesn't take away from the previous 20 years of great work...

looking through Jes' sketchbooks at Games Day is always one of the highlights of the day...
The Gothic and The Eldritch takes pride of place in my collection...
right up there with my Realms of Chaos books for classic timelessness...
i would love to see another volume, especially with the Warriors of Chaos sketches...
he really is a great designer...
his line art is so simple, yet brings the imagery of the GW world to life...

too bad BL seems to have stepped away from art collections over the last few years...

cheers

Agreed Jah, on all fronts.

I am currently sculpting away on the hybrids with plenty of inspiration from that book, really inspiring and feasible designs for mini scale.

I think any revenue they could take in from a Jes Goodwin book would be dwarfed by the take from a hypothetical one-day "Punch Jervis Johnson in the junk" event.

Actually, I would like to know the relative values of punching each of the following in the junk/jewels:

Jes Goodwin

Jervis Johnson

Phil Kelly

GW's entire Board of Directors

Random Red Shirts (your choice from a store)
