I have been admiring the man's sketches for years, all the way back to the 2nd edition Eldar Revamp. His sculpts are great too obviously, but I personally would love a book filled with his sketches and greens, as well as some discussion about his training, inspirations etc. Now I'm not talking a 40k fluff book, but a book on him as an artist mind you, I make the distinction as I wouldnt want something diluted to push product first, and explore the man's work second.

John Blanche is awesome too, as well as whomever did the 4th edition Tyranid concept art, and of course, Paul Dainton. Frankly I'd grab a book of sketches from each of those guys!

What do you guys think? Would you be interested in that kind of thing? lol hopefully a GW employee will quietly skim this and have the lighbulb go off lol!

You mean, beyond the one that was already released?

I'd GLADLY pay for another one, with new sketches and designs in it!

I plopped down a 50 spot in Baltimore for the Horus Heresy art book , I'd gladly do so again for Goodwin's work among others. I really want to expand my collection of art books though, so that might have something to do with it!

So as such, you want him to release an auto-biography that details his work?

Im all for it.
The guy really does know how to make an image look great. From concept image, to green, to finished product, its amazing.

I know every person has thier own style which would consist of a variety of techniques, but his really does stand out above the rest.

Not to de-rail this thread too much, but looking through an old catalogue of GW's from 1988 i think (old green ish cover, with an ork boy on the front, and about the size of a large bible)

I see alot of the very good pics have MG on them (ranging in place from pic to pic), could someone possibly shed some light on who he/she is please?

Just fill it with greens, that's all I would need.

MG or Mark Gibbons, was the Paul Dainton of the late 80's and early 90's. He had a very distinctive pencil style, with very hard shading and depth. It's a bit comic'y by today's standards, but he was a big reason I bought WD when I was a kid. He was responsible for a hell of a lot of work during that period.

Alphy, he already released one??? Excuse me while I google!

I have it - it is rather nice, but it has been a while since I've looked through it, if I can find it I'll see how much biographical info is in there...

It does have a LOT of his concept sketches for most of the 'classic' miniatures he's worked on.

It's a good sketchbook that included lots of Marine stuff and, more importantly for me, the Aspect Warriors.

If they released a second volume, I'd definitely buy it as well.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Not sure if these images have been posted somewhere on Dakka yet
I presume so so apologies if this is inappropriate

The Infantry can be found on page 2 of the thread

It indicates to me that a book would be jolly D as I occassionally dabble in designing sculpts (at least try to)

Would I?

Already have (like Alphy). Picked mine up at a games convention auction for $30AUD (It sold for $60 in the shops).

It was autographed, too.

The Gothic and the Eldritch was the first thing I bought at my first Games Day. 2001, Friday (back when GDs were two days). There is a Blanche one as well (maybe two, I know there is a specific Inquisitor Artbook for Blanche). I buy all of the Black Library/GW artbooks. I think the art is the best element of the hobby.

I'd happily buy a Kopinski, or Boyd, or Dainton, or another Blanche or Goodwin. Or Mark Gibbons concept art for 4th edition SM or BT.

I'd love a collection of Goodwin's recent work on Eldar and Dark Eldar.

If a new Jes Goodwin book came out I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I'd love to see some sort of "before and after" where it shows the development from initial sketch to finished product. I'd also buy a John Blanche artbook if one were to come out, as someone else already mentioned. I just wish there were more artbooks that weren't all about the Heresy, as cool as that stuff is.

Check out my Youtube channel!

I'm Heresy'd out too. I wouldn't want another artbook like visions of heresy, at least not for now. Some amazing stuff, some real filler.

I find Jes's work more interesting because it isnt just about making a pretty picture, but the actual design and development of the look of 40k. I'd rather get a making of type feel about the artist than an art of book about the product you know?

PS - Long shot, but if anyone is willing to part with their copy for a non-mental price, let me know!

Disagree at will, but at least make sense with it.

Goodwin makes sketches of things that you can actually feel are real with notations of how they will work and has a great flair.

Blanche's work is half-finished sketches with horrible proportions, splashes of ink/paint and a whole big bag of "WTF is going on here?".

I swear if I had a dollar for every time I squinted at his "artwork" and thought "where is his other hand/foot/leg?"

He's the Rob Liefeild of Game art.

Blanche ain't for everyone, but I do admire his creativity if not his execution.

Kid Kyoto that only makes me want to get it more! Great conversion ideas on those pages alone!
