Very nice army... judge probably did not have either the time or understanding of what you did to give it a proper score.

Thanks for all of the replies an support. I am just going to give a few bullet points since I am at work... >.>

-Yeah, I was pissed at first but I am now done venting.

-I think I deserve less points than I got overall but that would also mean a lot of other people deserved less too. And I am not so mad about not getting more points as much as I am concerned that I didn't get the points I deserved. I should have more here but less there...

-I am fine with my score as it is the only way my friends will feel like they paint better than me for once. Now I have a reason to not give them any more advise.

-I have played against the TO's once before at a local tournament and destroyed them. So it might just be Karma.

-Overall they are good people and i don't hold it against them. I work in accounting so I know how little errors can occur. If anything, I think they accidentally switch my opponent's and my score sheet, so really they are robbing him of 3 more points.

-The army isn't finished and I know more can be done. It cost me one days worth of salary and 2 weekends of building/painting. I wasn't expecting to take home any prizes.

-I posted this in painting rather than the tournament discussions just to put it out there that stuff like this can happen. Kind of a warning to aspiring painters that they might need to push themselves a little more than they thought.

-After mission 5 I think the TO's have enough gruff to deal with rather than my petty paint points.

-If anyone wants to see this army in person, I am going to try and stop by GW Alamo on Friday night to get a few practice games in before this Saturday's 1850 tournament at Black Diamond Games.

Again, thanks for your replies.

I have Faith.

And I dont know if the winner WORKS for the studio, but if not ya thats really lame. Those contests are not about who has the most money to buy the best pro painter, its about the PERSONS ability. That sucks, but you cant do anything other then write them and explain what happened, and even show that link of the winners army being painted by a pro, not the player.

I do also agree though, that Nurgle armies are a dime a dozen. Everyone plays them, and everyone converts them. So I wouldnt expect you to of won, but at least get better points. Not getting anything for the board.......Ive seen some really detailed boards, and yours really was dirt in a frame, I mean really, how mad can you get at that? I bet it took you 10 minutes to make it.

I literally did pour kitty litter into a picture frame I got off my wall.

It took me under 1 minute.

I got a point.

So...

This is an interesting point. Does it state anywhere that the army has to be painted by the owner? If not, he's done nothing wrong, if so then he's been a naughty boy...

I was also at the tournament and feel that the painting judging was not up to standards.

I brought my well painted Angry Marine Army. My total painting score was 25 points. The judge missed many things that were obviously there. In his defense he had lunch time to judge all the players there. I think there were over 70.

Looking at the OP's army while it was there I would say it was a clean presentation. I do remember it so that is a plus. I can tell you that I did not notice all the conversions he did. I just thought to myself "Oh wow, another Nurgle army." I would have guessed that it should have gotten around 30-35 points placing it in the good, above table top level.

What i don't like is that there so many people who enter a army they did not paint. I think that should be a check mark in the rubic: Do you paint the army yourself?

Oh and the dude who won the best painted with a army he bought from Blue Table Painting - Douche of the Tourney Award for sure!

For me here is why I felt robbed in the paint judging. My friend brought a mostly borrowed army. Basic Ultramarines and Crimson Fists. He got a 27 and his models didn't even match! My sons army was orks, I painted those two years ago before I knew half of the painting techniques I do now. That army got a 31!

My army had a weathered effect and was painfully yellow, I made Angry Marine decals from scratch, I built a Stormraven from a kitbash of many models. Took off all the Blood Angles symbols on every model. Made custom resin bases, built power bats, made one of the models give the finger with a power claw and even numbered the vehicles with numbers from the California penal code. I drybrushed, hairsprayed, greenstuffed, and painted friggin yellow!

I tell you all this because the judge just straight missed it all.

They did the judging during the lunch hour. How are we supposed to pot out all the work we did in that case? I did notice some of the more shrewd players greasing the judge's ear while he was on their table. Looks like they were smarter then the op and myself.

What all this comes down to is that the judjing was done haphazardly. If we tell Da Grand Waaagh what we think they will change it for next year. They are a great group of guys and want to make this a great GT. Was I ticked when it first happened: a little. This is just the growing pains of a GREAT GT.

I call BS! This is a GT! We all know it is implied that we paint these armies ourselves. He took all the credit like he did paint those and never once volunteered that he did not them painted. I overheard him telling someone the techniques he used! Add to that he took the prize from Walter from Iron Dog Studios. Walter had a ridiculousness Ork army that was dripping with great conversions and a even better paint job. Look at it here: http://irondogstudios.com/profileork.html

I call DOUCHE big time!

It is odd that people can talk to the judges when the evaluation is taking place.
Would have thought, like model shows, only judges are allowed in.
Dammit, it is even the same at our local agricultural show when they judge the carrots (and everything else for that matter).

As for passing off someone else's work as one's own, if that was the case

I've only been to one GT, but the Judging at the SoCal smackdown was seemingly excellent.

The judge asked questions about the army and asked if there was anything specific that I wanted her to see, and then gave a couple of easy pointers on how to squeeze a few more points with a minimal amount of effort.

If you're going to be charging a pretty decent chunk of change to be in a Tournamet(it was what, 70$?), you should at least make sure that things are being judged fairly.

Totally agree with you. The Judge not only asked about the Army and conversions, she even gave me a copy of the judging scoresheet so I now know what the criteria are and can work on something better than basic table-top.

It would be one thing if he had won the tournament, taken best over all. Then I'd be with you.

But he won best painted. He didn't win the tournament, he won a painting competition.

Honestly this sort of stuff is why I don't enjoy tournaments anymore since it really just makes it "who spent the most money buying fancy s*** like professional painters and a shipping service to deliver your 10 pound movement tray diorama". I've seen people win modeling/painting awards after buying an army off the internet a month prior or similar painting services which makes the award and scores seem pointless. I've known judges who were ridiculously strict on the tiniest details which is silly when there are others at the same event that just go down the check marks without really looking for flaws.

I've personally done paint judging for a tournament. One guy has a very nicely painted army and I was personally looking to do some similar effects so I started asking him what techniques he used. He gave me a really vague description some of which sounded off but whatever, I gave him his score and left. Later I was talking to some other people and I mentioned how cool his stuff looked and they laughed and said that he's been having a service paint his army incrementally for a while. Honestly I don't think there's really anything you can do to stop it except only go to local tournaments where everyone knows who is a decent painter and who isn't.

Personally if armies aren't required to be painted by their owners, what's the point of even having that score since it doesn't reflect the player at all? Yes it costs a lot of money, but can I just pay someone to stand behind me while I play to tell me if I'm making a bad move or not? It's really the same thing and effectively buying points just goes against the spirit of a competitive tournament.

If there's a painting award to be made then in my mind that is a painting competition. It appears to be a separate award from the gaming side of the tournament and has no impact upon the tournament outcome. I don't see a problem with buying a pre-painted army, some people prefer to do this and I don't think less of them for it. But you shouldn't then participate in a painting contest, that's called cheating, it should be declared. And if you paid a high quality painting service to do the stuff and then knowingly entered them to win awards, well that's just out and out dishonesty.

If you entered someone else's work in a standard model show under your own name it would be called cheating for sure. I remember a few years ago there was a stink at some of the bigger model shows because some of the Russian entries were collaborative works being entered under a single name. You are supposed to declare such things because it's obvious that a collaborative effort with one person specialising in horses and another on armour and one on skin tones will produce a better model. But they weren't and some things were being entered under a single name to scoop up prizes, it created a lot of bad feeling and of course the distrust and suspicion generated then gets targeted at innocent parties too.

One person did all the paint scoring. As games wound down and people set their armies up waiting to move onto the next game she would catch them at that moment and spend a few minutes going over their army. Over the course of 2 days she was able to get to everyones army and know exactly what was going on.
(EDIT) She was also pretty forgiving regarding any broken off bits a model may have had (as long as it was apparent the damage happened at the event...like the broken piece is sitting next to the model on the board).
She also plays the game so she understands whats what and if you were using "counts as conversions" (like Hulksmash's "Mechanicus used as Daemons" army) how effective they were at representing the model/unit versus the overall theme of your Army.
From looking at the checklist and how my army was scored (pretty low being basic table top) I think she was pretty fair and didn't chipmunk anyone over any personal bias she might have over favorite army types.

Wrong!

The judge managed to miss many basic conversions and entire display boards. I never talked to any lady judge in the two days I was there neither did my son or our friend. I think the problem was that the judge didn't know all of the armies there, was pressed for time and there was ONLY ONE JUDGE!

I went to this event to be fairly and completely judged on my painting score. Many of us do not feel like that happened.

I am no master painter. I do know I am average striving to be better. The painting rubic was pretty much a check list. When you look at your army and obvious things aren't checked then you begin to wonder. Here are a couple examples:

My army had a Stormraven. There is no model for that so I altered a Valkyrie to make it. I flipped the wings, added a Eagle head from the Shrine of the Aquila. Made a turret from plastic card. Magnetized everything. Made decals on my computer specifically for this army. Painted it yellow and then did a technique to make it look like the paint was scoured off. And this was one model from my army. Most received this attention. Pretty much every marine had some custom work. Power bats, power wrenches, a lightning claw that was flipping the bird. Now I am not saying how good the conversions were; that IS for the judge to decide but they were there. I only got a minor conversion point.

Second. On the army above I got a 25 paint score. Disappointing for all the hours I put in it but hey, what are you going to do. I went with my friend and my son. My friend brought Crimson fists. He didn’t get all his models painted in time so he borrowed 80% from a friend. They were well painted for sure but the 20% he painted we sloppy and didn’t match the other 80%. He got a 27, two more points than me and his army was barely painted for 20%

My sons army was Orks. They are painted pretty well and there are many conversions. I would personally say its painted to tabletop level. It scored 31. I think I am a fair judge of its quality and I should be; I painted it two years ago! I would like to think that after two years I might have gotten better but after all this time I beat myself!

I point all this out to show the judging was haphazard and arbitrary. Not being the best doesn’t bother me in the least. Not being judged to the same standard does.

I would also like to not that I had a great time at this tournament. The terrain was top notch as good or better then at Adepticon. All the organizers were awesome guys. I managed to stomp some face and get my teeth kicked in. Pretty much everything I expected and more. My son and I will be returning next year.

If the rules for painting do not state 'must be painted by you' then he won it.

I don't think it's very fair (in fact I think the rules for painting MUST say 'painted by the player') as has been stated, wtf is the point of the award. Might just as well hire another player to play against certain armies you're unfamiliar with or something.

If the guy with the BTP painted army lied and stated that he did paint them and thereby won, then, and only then, burn the bugger at the stake as publicly as you like.

According to some of his opponents, he actually did tell folks that he painted the army. . . .

I did not bother to ask--and as said earlier it was not technically a requirement.

/shrug

I got an almost decent painting score--that is kind of bad because I cannot paint. That makes me sad that the OP did not get more.
And according to their spreadsheet the person I voted for player's choice got zero votes.

I asked how they did things in socal, he was just responding.

Build a fire for a man and he will be warm for a day; set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain.

Sly Marbo doesn't go to ground, the ground comes to him.

Correct. We were talking about how the paint judging was done at the Socal Smackdown and how awesome it was.

That is a beautiful force. I could never paint that good, and I'm considered one of the best artists in my high school.

You should have gotten such a better score, maybe next time.

sorry about the tough judge, because your army looks great. I think you need to find that dude and punch him in the kidney

4250 points of Blood Angels goodness, sweet and silky W12-L6-D4
1000 points of Teil-Shan (my own scheme) Eldar Craftworld in progress
800 points of unassembled Urban themed Imperial Guard
650 points of my do-it-yourself Tempest Guard
675 points of Commoraghs finest!

The Dude - "Jackie Treehorn treats objects like women, man."

Lord Helmet - "I bet she gives great helmet."

May be to tiny and infirm to punch right... but it is a decently painted army, and the 1st place winner didn't deserve it either.
