Moving flat out..

The models are looking incredible and the prices are respectable as well.

I'm definitely looking forward to checking out the Codex.

Well, not really except that the ridiculous models they released for Mandrakes had some of their faces covered up by stupid bondage masks:

vs.

(Which is better?)

Anyway, the deal is that Mandrakes were always supposed to be debased versions of the Dark Eldar that 'fed' on living souls. The tiny bit of flavor text in the last codex said:

"Mandrakes are the most malevolent of the Dark Eldar, preying on their own kind from the shadows of Commarragh. Who can say how a Dark Eldar Lord can entice these vile creatures to serve him in battle. What prizes can be offered to beasts who crave flesh and blood and little else?"

With the reboot on Mandrakes they've taken that idea even further. These are Eldar who have become mixed with some level of demon (or something else dark and sinister). They now are literally supposed to be able to appear/disappear into shadows and they are able to directly suck the life essence out of their victims and then use that energy to shoot bolts at their adversaries. That's the weird 'flames' on the Mandrakes...it is the life energy that they consume from their victims and then use as a projectile weapon.

They're kind of like shadowy Eldar vampires.

For those that didn't catch it about a week ago - there were notes on the picture of the mandrake and I believe Jes Goodwin mentioned them. Anyway, he said that their faces constantly change and morph. Sometimes they won't have eyes or a mouth - their faces are always shifting. So, that's the reason that that one in particular doesn't have a mouth, I would imagine. I'd suspect the others to be differently modelled without a prominent feature.

And I though I was in love with the old Urien Rakarth model!

Oh, and about the mandrakes.. I actually like the older look. The bondage kinda made them creepy in a way, especially how the
armybook described them as these stalkers that even hunted their own.

That Urien model is magnificent, and that mandrake looks like some kind of weird japanese type thing and I love it.

I still hate the hellions though, it looks like that guy barley fits on the board, I always thought the green goblin skyboard thing was stupid.

I always thought they looked like they were some kind of backup dancer. Truly terrible models.

Regarding the new Hellion pic....MUCH better. Lends credence to the theory that the first one was an uninspired assembly and pose.

Yeah, it was the masks I was remembering. I have a squad of the old models, though I haven't looked at it carefully in a long time. I also painted them black at the time with green pseudo-camo splotches regardless of whether or not they had the mask in an attempt to give them the look that the new sculpts have now before they are painted.

I just learned that my local GW store has their Dark Eldar Black Box, so I'm hoping to get a look at the Codex and sprues tonight.

I was debating heading to my local GW tonight, but that settles it... I'm gonna have to suck it up and head over, just on the off chance I can sneak a peek.

I hear ya, which is why I've got close to $1,300 (MSRP value) of models which I am in the process of putting into lots to sell on Ebay. It's amazing that much stuff is just lying around now for years and years and never having anything done w/ them.

I checked out the new DE Codex tonight. Terrific stuff. Like all the newer Codex books there are lots of things in it that have no models yet and that won't have models for a while. Example, Archons can have a retinue of 4 different types of crazy monsters!

I'm building the Reaver Jetbike models for my local store. They go together easy and have lots of optional bits on the sprue. And check out the new flying stems, they have a small ball on top instead of that fragile little pin. So, they not only are less fragile but allow for dynamic tilting of the Reavers on top of them.

So I guess nobody remembers the old ball and socket joint used by the previous reaver models? Or did GW stop making them at some point?

That ball and socket was a separate piece that fit onto the stem. The new stem has a ball molded on top, there is no two-piece ball and socket add-on bit.

I really have no business starting another army as a poor college student, but my god are those models amazing! I will be ordering the book + about 1000 points worth of models tomorrow, just to support a major NON SM release. Gotta take advantage of the xeno love when it's given! Hopefully my LFGS will have a copy of the book for me to take a peek at, to get an idea on what to take.
