Perfectly fine.

I agree with the no proxies in tournament rules. However as a totally skint space-bum I frequently proxy things just to be able to play a game, say using generic boyz as burnas/stormboyz to see how they do in a game before I shell out my soul on a full squad, or using a bunch of my opponents spare biovores and zoanthropes to represent meganobz because mine were currently in bits in a jam-jar full of dettol, Or another time its fine is if e.g. the guardsman with flamer actually has a plasma gun.

However, K.I.S.S (keep it simple stupid). If you end up with 'OK, so this leman russ is a chimera, and this chimera is a valkyrie, and these LotR horses are melta vets... then it's time to actually get the right models!

This. Never in a competitive game. Although I have no problem with people saying by the way all my Long Fangs have missile launchers etc if they actually have Long Fangs models since I know in the UK there has been a big dearth in missile launchers available from bits sites.

As always, don't conflate proxying with "counts-as." Proxies are place holders, models that are completely improper for the rules being played. Counts-as are conversions, or similar models painted appropriately, to intentionally represent the correct unit.

Using Ork Boys as Grey Knights is a proxy.

Orky Boys with all of their armor painted gunmetal are "Counts as" ard boys.

Generally speaking, Counts-as satisfy (however tenuosly) the WYSIWYG rules, while not using the "proper" model.

As for proxies, I'm pretty open minded. I prefer to defeat my opponents in open battle, not by not letting them use proxies. I'll rarely use them, however, as I have pretty big armies and I like to play with only painted stuff.

i personally dislike using proxies on my own, however fairly recently, i ran a "guard" army that was all marines. This was due to my "guardsmen" being in the post, and i dont have near the vehicles needed for the army as a whole.. basically way it went down was: bolters= lasguns, special weapons all =grenade launcher, marine SGT=guardsman SGT, my "leman russes" were predators

This being that way because of not having the models, with the exception of my HQ model, but now, i will not run a guard army until my 126 Great Coat Troopers are at least assembled.

For other people, the proxy thing is as said before, intent of my opponent. The ease of figuring out whats what, and if the model you need has a terminator sized base, the model you are using in its place had better be on the same size base, so appropriately sized models need to be had for a "good" proxy.

It's a game. Proxies are all good, as long as you're not an donkey-cave about it. If you get to use a Terminator as a Librarian, don't moan because I'm using my nobs as meganobs.

Not all of us can drop buckets of cash or time into our hobby. The last thing I want to do on a thursday night after work is to have a fight at my gaming club. So use cokecan droppods, I'm too tired to care.

I try not to proxy stuff if I can help it, aside from something like "these guys with hand weapons really have spears". But I could care less if someone else does it. As long as I know what the unit or model is supposed to be. hell most of the folks in my club use empty bases to fill up WFB unit ranks in the back. Not everyone can afford or have the time to build & paint a full army, and that shouldn't mean they're not allowed to play among friends.
