I don't think you can sound pretentious when you admit that one of your few shows is basically a bunch of idiots arguing with each other and Gordon Ramsey yelling at them. It started off sort of like Top Chef with insults and swearing instead of the 'sniff and sneer,' but now the intro pictures seem more like a line of mug shots and and turned the angry up to 11.

It's really weird if you watch some of his UK shows, he's like a completely different person.

South Park's episode about how Family Guy episodes are made sums up my views of the show pretty well.
Also, who does Seth think he is? Having THREE unfunny shows? I can tolerate American Dad, but the Cleveland Show is even worse than Family Guy.

I mean, seriously, people are complaining about a lack of character development in Family Guy?

If the show had retained its style from the first three seasons I would agree, Family Guy was innocently, pointlessly funny but as soon as the show starts using political and religous satire like a kid at the grownups table and is deemed incredibly witty then Im not going to hold back. Ive a right to my opinion.

I must agree, what puzzles me though is Seth Macfarlane seems to actually go out of he's way to be lazy, for instance Cleveland Jr was never really that funny but I was dumb founded why Seth turned him into a basic Black Chris for the Cleveland Show. An obese kid with social issues, well gee thats original.
Possibly the only thing different in the whole Cleveland show layout is that the daughter is the opposite of Meg, shes beautiful, popular and well liked. But not overly interesting.

As for American Dad, Im a fan but its still flawed like the rest of Seth's shows.
I like the character layout especially Roger who I think is the greatest character the team ever popped out, the show actually has a plot even if the stories are incredibly predictable due to Seth's need to bash Republicans, Organized Religion and any one anti Democrat.
But the show as a whole isnt bad, definately the one show which still has potential.

I'm amazed that we are reaching a virtual consensus on this topic. I was sure we would have had more people supporting this rapidly decaying shadow of its former glory.

I agree with pretty much everything the OP said. The early seasons of the show were the work of a comic genius and his political rhetoric was more rarely displayed and more easily overlooked. Now it seems like 10 minutes of each show is devoted to calling everyone who doesn't think like him an idiot and his comedy just isn't funny any more. I never ordered a side of political commentary with my comedy and it's kind of a deal breaker.

Family Guy was a huge disappointment for me. I loved it in it's original run on Fox and watched in on Adult Swim all the time. But, when it came back, it had lost all of it's value to me. Maybe Fox actually knew what they were doing when they canceled it.

It makes me think that maybe it was a good thing Firefox was canceled as well. Was Firefox Season 2 going to be terrible?

Has anyone been watching the new Futurama? Is it actually decent?

Umm, what? I never said people weren't smart enough to get the show, I said it was a particularly mindless show that people are likely overthinking when they find problems with it.

Firefly? And the movie sure did suck, so who knows if the show could have kept up the standard?

The movie length episodes were kind of okay, but some people did really like them so it's probably best to watch them and make up your own mind. But the new episodes are pretty solid, probably none as good as the best of the old episodes, but still pretty funny.

Oh no, I wasnt referring to you, just others who I feel if they can criticize me for not liking the show I can express my reason for disliking it.
Like I said, the first three seasons it was a mindless but funny show, kinda like Drawn Together which I really like for being a mindless show, but Family Guy over the years has tried to to be some kind of commentary on real world events and actually thinks it brings a useful relevant opinion rather then insescent whining which actually sacrifices the comedic affect of the show.
Long, over tired jokes arent funny to me, where others see brilliance for some reason i see hopelessly and needlessly lazy.

Laziness is my biggest issue with the show, its in everything from characer design to jokes.

I don't understand when people complain about comedies having a bad storyline. Why are you watching these shows for plot? May I suggest a book, or even a movie?

Well anyway, I agree the show has declined, but so has the Simpsons, so I guess when you have a show on TV for many years. that just happens.

Simsons, South Park and Family Guy all have stories to their episodes, how about the one where Homer gets a job working for Hank Scorpio, or when Cartman becomes god of the sea people. While these shows can keep on track with what the episode is actually about and make jokes reffering to the plot of the story line Family Guy tends to struggle and often the first half of the show isnt going to be the story of the the last half. Not to mention the jokes often detract from the story and sometimes go completely haywire, for example I think the last chicken fight went for almost a quarter of an episode and by the end I could hardly remember what the heck this episode was about.

While some people like this is comes off as muddled and uncoordinated. Simply put its bad writing.

Well, this complaint has become hip ever since South Park had an episode making fun of Family Guy for this reason.

It's not that wacky random comedy can't work. Look at Scrubs (back when it was good), or early Family Guy, or some of the good sketch comedy out there.

It's just that Family Guy doesn't pull off the wacky in a funny way any more. Random asides can be great, but the punchline needs to be worth it. Family Guy just has random asides that aren't funny. Seth's love of over-the-top incredibly long boring patches was great the first few times you saw it, but now it's just boring.

Fair enough. I get the impression a lot of people in this thread take their goofy animated shows a lot more seriously than I do, and seem to watch them a lot more often than I do.

If it was ten years ago and I was able to watch as much tv as I did back then, I'd likely agree with you guys.

ColdFire wrote:While some people like this is comes off as muddled and uncoordinated. Simply put its bad writing.

Bad writing is a product of intent. If a show intends to give coherent stories and provide characters and fails, it is bad writing. If a show has no interest in those things, then their absence is a choice of style.

Whether or not that style is something you look is up to you, but it doesn't make it bad writing.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. Which is not the end of the world, obviously. But it's worth remembering that a lot of American teens watch the show, and they're not exactly known for being well-versed in world culture - if they're getting their images of outside cultural groups from shows like South Park and Family Guy (and let's face it, many of them are) then that's a worry.

Not all american teens are ignorant, or impressionable. Just a lot, unfortunately. (I go to a school full of rednecks, how do you think I feel )

Ok, you got me there.

I was just saying that I don't care about plot when its obvious the writers don't either.

The problem with Family Guy is definitely that sometimes it goes off on tangents that aren't really that funny, like most people say. At this point it would be much better if they just stuck to one central plot each episode, instead of it completely changing halfway through. Hey South Park got out of the trend of killing Kenny every episode, I'm sure Family Guy could do it too if they wanted.

Oh, South Park definitely hit it spot on with their episode.

It just bugs me how Family Guy went from "cool show that proves people know better than TV execs" to "crappy show with dumb gags" basically overnight because South Park said so.

I don't disagree with the assessment, I just don't like all these damned bandwaggon hoppers!
