Okay let me try this again I was not trying to cause friction here, I was asking a question about this subject that I was not entirly sure on. Just because I am an American does not make me a complete idiot who only see's other people and countrys based on just their stereotypes! I don't judge people based on race, religion, or where your from America may not be the greatest country but what my country is doing or has done in the past I have no control over, so don't judge based on this. Yes the question I asked was stupid but I dont like to go to google if I dont have to.. I would rather ask here and get a reponse from someone who knows what their talking about the people on this site are very diverse and have an endless wealth of information combined so I saw it fit to ask here I'm sorry I am a little rusty on my history and geography...

No no I just want to know if this will lower the price of Guinness? Its right up there with Chemay, Bass Ale, and a good Hefeweisen.

I get plenty of kids in my school, up to year 10, who think ireland is not only part of "england" but also physically attached to the rest of Great Britain. Which is hilarious. So I don't get too het up about Americans not knowing what the score is- though I must point out, proper reading of the thread would have answered that for you before you asked.

As to alcohol stereotypes, we have a similar drinking culture to the north of England, but our government has a subsidised bar at parliment, so make of that what you will.
I could go into detail about the reasons for the crash, which are many and varied, but it basically comes down to clientellism, poor regulation, and incompetance in both elected officials, union reps and senior civil servants.
Politics in Ireland has been dominated by the Civil War for far too long and it has fostered a complete stagnation of our political system. Sadly, many of the poorly educated, anti-intellectual older generation and their brainwashed peons in my generation still cling to the notion that any of that is important these days- similarly to how they cling to their ill informed and frankly embarassing animosity towards the UK. Ireland needs many changes if it is ever to be a properly successful state without large injections of foreign cash.
Albatross: I don't blame the EU, I really don't. Without them, we'd still be a backward, almost third world country, with even less infastructure and a pretty piss poor education system. It's my belief that our education system still isn't all it's cracked up to be, but it's SOMETHING.

It's a sad thing to see, and worrying for the rest of Europe due to the knock on effect this may have on other states economies. Should the same happen to the likes of Portugal I can see the larger more stable Eurozone countries saying "feth this for a laugh were out of here".

I'm the same when I hear someone speaking chinese. When I take what they say literally (silly british literally) I often feel like they are talking complete jiberish.

Awww, before your edit, I thought you were referencing the actual irish alphabet, ie.

You were only 1 off, even with the joke.

Edit: Wow, that's a little bit annoying. Is there any way to turn off the anti-text speak filter?

Theoretically it could happen, but given eastern help, seems like it's going magically away.

Along with raises, teaching positions, any state-related jobs, the "13th" month, stuff like that. Oh, and we got one of the most expensive highways in the north, which was previously free and built with EU funds.

But thankfully the chinese intervened. We've gave them back Macau, now we're giving them our homeland.

That, and there's no snakes there thanks to Saint Patrick. We celebrate it every year until we throw up green beer and corned beef all over an alley.

Seriously Dude, you should google this rather than post it on a forum for all and sundry to see. You're not doing the stereotype of geographically challenged Americans any favor.

This reminds me of when someone on this very forum looked at your flag and assumed that English wasn't your first language.

OT:

I know the history, but I can't begin to even attempt to understand the way people who actually live in these countries feel about the issue because I'm so far removed from it.

I wouldn't take it as hard as all that tough, Da Boss. How much of this can be blamed on the global economic difficulty of the last few year, do you think?

According to our government? All of it!
According to the independant investigators (two sets, one from ireland, one from the EU) very little, our crisis is mostly constructed of unviable economic policy pushed by a political elite engaged in clientellism to a level usually found only in Third World countries.
