It only gains wounds. It gains strength as it's wounds increase. It never gains Toughness.

That is spelled out very clearly in the Tyranid Codex. If someone pulls a rule on you that you are not sure about, or simply don't believe, force them to show you the rule themselves.

Just for the record, there are NO units in the Nid codex that have eternal warrior-it was my biggest reason for not picking up the army. Sure, I love the look of the models, but when almost any model can be insta-killed by a S8 weapon...no thanks. Doom never struck me as too fancy-gimmicky and pretty, yes. Amazing...no. I think the missiles are your best bet, or the green tide with power klaws. Those do sound like good options. Chop his freakin head off

timetowaste, "almost any model can be insta-killed by S8"? Sure, except for Hive Tyrants, Tyrant Guard, Tervigons, Tyranid Primes, Hive Guard, Harpies, Carnifexes, Trygons, Mawlocs, and Carnifexes. It's trivially easy to make an effective army that doesn't include any multi-wound T4 creatures.

I dont know if someoe said taht yet, but my tipical awser for big mounstrous guys, when playing orkz is very simple: slugga it to death, if that dont work, assault him...
A full squad of slugga boyz have suffice power to lose 5 orkz, hit 3 of the sluggas, and assault for 60 attacks...

You just started that sentence with the conjunct "But".
Even though this is commonly accepted, it has been poor grammar since the 18th century.

Yeah, T4. Instant Death. Pick your poison. Rokkits, Deffrollas, Killa Kan CC attacks, Deff Dread.
To defend against the Doom bring a KFF. Cover saves vs. the effect.
Some people say assault the thing with a mob of Orks and PK it to death. I say that if that is your ONLY option for killing the Doom, you're better off ignoring it. Those Orks can probably do better running away from it and engaging something else.
The only time I Dakka'd the Doom to death was one time that it dropped in the middle of 60 Shoota Boyz, and I rolled miraculously on all my saves and the Doom only absorbed 1 wound. That much firepower doesn't care about a 3+ invuln. with only 4 wounds.

Is the doom really an issue against orks? I thought with Mob Rule they got to use the number of boys in the mob as their leadership?
How badly do you have to roll to not make under 30 on 2D6?

Because characteristics other than armor value are capped at 10?

Yup. Capped at 10.
Still... was priceless that one game when the Doom landed on me and I proceeded to roll a 15 on 3D6, which would have given 5 wounds to the Doom. Only then I made all my cover saves so he got nada.

Well yeah, but I've been told that codex specific things trump the rulebook, and that the ork codex says they may always subsitute the number of boys in the mob as the leadership.
If not, that both sucks for me for having bought it, and is going to be awesome next game I play the local orks.
Is there some kind of FAQ on that?

Codex does NOT trump the rulebook. Specific rules trump general rules.
In this case, the general rule is found in the codex saying orks can use the number of models as their leadership. The specific rule is found in the BGB saying it's capped at 10.
To further convince your friends, check out the ork FAQ:
http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1490295a_FAQ_Orks_2010.pdf
The first Q isn't exactly on point, but it's basically the same issue. "Does mob rule let you get above 10 leadership?" "No"

Works for me.
However, wouldn't the BRB be "General" as it covers all the rules and Codices, and the Codex be "specific", as it is covering only that army?
The FAQ is still pretty damning to any argument against, and this saturday is gonna be great.

The BGB is usually the more general rule. But, it isn't always. This is one of those rare cases.
Codex: Orks even compensates for this cap at 10. That's why you get "fearless" if you number 11 or more, because you can't get a leadership of 11 or more.
(It also applies to the SAG, as results of 11 or 12 can't fire with strength 11 or 12, so you get special rules for those events)
