Believe it or not, it's the Citadel spray gun with propellant can.
Took me 4 goes to get the rusty orange the right consistency.

Here's more on the base - second layer of Adeptus Grey with some Regal Blue in it over salt and hairspray (chipping effect hopefully):

And here's the result after a light shade of codex grey and then toothbrush scrubbing to remove salt:

Bases and display board integrated:

Bases separate:

And close ups:

Still more to do, but pretty happy with the result so far.

It was worth it.

I've been thinking of getting the spray gun for the same reason, I want to try the hair spray technique on some trukks. Would you recommend it? An airbrush just seems like a huge expense at the moment and I dont intend to try use it for detail.

Bangbangboom - Thanks!
The reason I bought the Citadel spray gun was exactly because it's 'relatively' cheap in comparison to an airbrush, and it's designed for bulk coverage.
3 things I've learnt:
1- The propellant cans will build up the cost quickly, as they run out fast - the painting you see above plus a few 'cleaning' sprays have just about depleted my first can
2- Paint consistency - thicker than the recommended 50/50, more like 70/30
3- Put the propellant can in a bucket of room temp water - it won't cool as fast as the low stays consistent for longer

Gutsplitta wrote:Very nice! I especially like the look of that Dakka Ork. He has some real character.

Gutsplitta - Thanks!
Dakka-Ork has taken the place of the Boss Meat (in WIP above) - I was unable to get the chain weapon held in a 'natural' way - might go back to him at a later date...

PIP - a white 'zenithal' spray and then 'shadow' spray from underneath with the same Adeptus Grey/Regal Blue mix used on the base.

Wow! these are looking really cool, expecially with these bases.

I must say, I was surprised by the scale of the base though. Somehow seeing the three bases side-by-side without the figs. I had some impression of them being much larger and the whole plan being more of a diorama scene.

Having said that, I think this looks great. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

- I never did show a scale pic of the bases - they're terminator-sized bases, 3 of them slotted into LOTR movement trays joined together.
- I made the industrial setting with the main intention of trying out the salt-and-hairspray technique
- And these Orks aren't really intended to be played, they are an experiment in modelling, combining Black Orc bits with Ork Nobs, and also painting technique improvement pieces ... for example, I have discovered yellow is an absolute bitch to paint!

Well, I see no reason why these couldn't be played. They look great and would make some great nobz.

Yellow may be a bitch to paint, but you've done a fantstic job. I really like the weathering on it. I often hear yellow is such a pain, maybe that's why I stuck to Dethaskullz blue. Still, when yellow's done well it makes for a really striking force. Well done to take up that challenge!
