I'd say most people in I've met in the UK call them
Tih-ranid/Tear-anid same as Tyranny and Tyrannosaurus (although lots of people are begining to say Tie-ranno-saurus now)
As they're are British invention you should just go with that

Tear-uh-nid. Well, not quite, perhaps it's just my accent but I don't pronounce the tyr the same as I would tear. Hrm.

Oh, and you guys don't pronunce "physics" as "fi-sicks" do you? Then why pronunce "Tyranids" as "Tie-ra-nids"?
Although I do pronunce "Hive Tyrant" as "Hive Tie-runt". A tiranny is an existing word.

I see a lot of "Tear-a-nid"
Is that tear pronounced "Tare" Like you're tearing something apart, or "Teer" like the ones that come out of space marine eyes?
Tie runt? Turr-a-bull.

I'd have to agree. Teer-a-nid is how I've always said it as well.
There is a 13ish year old kid at my local GW that says "Terrornid". I like that too, even if its wrong.

Manchu, "Tear" was the questioned word. Tare or teer were the options there. Kinda like including the word being described in the definition.
Also,I fear no JotWW. it usually goes "Oh, space wolves. Got a drop pod priest with those?"
If the answer is yes, I deploy like I've got some sense, scattering across the x and y axis so that no two low I bugs are less than 25" apart and recite the following joke:
So a baby seal walks into a bar, and the bartender asks what it will have to drink.
"Anything but a Canadian Club."

Hmm . . . Your OP is: Doomthumbs wrote:Tee-ran-id?
Tie-ra-nid?
I thought this meant you wanted to know if it was "ty" as in the drink "tea" or "ty" as in the garment businessmen wear around their necks. "Tea" (the sound, not the spelling) + "ran" does not necessarily produce "tear," as in crying -- which, by the way, I did qualify in my post. So I'm a bit confused about your complaint here.

Melissia wrote:That would be "teer."
See, my confusion was because you had obviously read the post about "Tear" in addition to the OP. I say obviously because you used the same joke that I made there, only modified it for SW.
Melissa answered with one of the two choices provided in that same post, "Teer". The other option was "Tare".
You responded with "Tear".
So, your answer to the pronunciation of "Tear" was the same word, with no different spelling to denote inflection.
I do agree that tea-ran- id would be a better phonetic breakdown for how I've generally said it though. Much appreciated.
Again, I prostrate myself before you and beg your forgiveness if I have offended you.

My tervigons are essentially paper mache eggs with spare parts from my bits box glued on. The bonus is that its easy, unique, buglike, and I don't waste a large torso of a carnifex/trygon.
Another huuuge upshot is that the egg is hollow, and fits 45 Gants inside, that I can shake them out of the... uhm, orifice as they are spawned. Saves on space in my nid box.
So without further ado... My Tea-ran- id Tervigon.

@Doomthumbs: Ah, I see. I was agreeding with M about the pronunciation but trying to use an actual word so as to clarify regional differences. I probably should have used "tier."

I still pronounce it like GW does in all of their licenced works that I have heard, "Teer a nid" even though I said it like that before I heard it. Maybe I am missing some other examples of them saying it? Editing to add: (I also pronounce Tyran as Teer an, and Tyrany as Teer any, but Lasgun as Lahz gun)

Greek by way of Latin and Old French, I believe. It doesn't matter if 'Tyranid' is English, it follows its root, i.e. tyrannus (Latin) and tyrannos (Greek) and therefore it will follow the rules around that.
Why do you think 'debt' is spelled as it is, instead of 'dette' (as it used to be)? Because the root is 'debitum'

You are so full of effing ess that I cannot believe it sir.
Tyranid has Latin roots? GTFO. Its a word made up by GW, in our lifetime, none of whom speak Latin. Technically, its "Roots" have not even come to pass yet, as it is derived from the planet Tyran(as yet undiscovered), so named by some Astropath (an as yet uncreated job) in the year 40 thousand (its gonna be a while).
Tyrannos? You're so high right now aren't you?
Trying to give me gak about grammar... please.
