Try painting them up as Crimson Fists - keep it old school! Here's some I painted in my mostly RT/2nd ed CF army:
For assault Marines, you could try using the combat blades the set comes with, and attaching it to their bolters. Say they have assault-pattern bolters or whatever, and let the giant bayonets and such count as their close combat weapons.

I decided against Crimson Fists (as awesome as they are) just because I wanted a brighter army. But I really like your suggestion for assault marines. That saves me having to find a bunch of suitable chainswords. It should look pretty cool too!
By the way, your Fists look great!

Oh. those do look good. I haven't had a chance to compare but I was expecting the modern chainswords to be too large.

Painted my first models today using the Star Phantoms scheme. I think they turned out well. After the first I've learned that I need to paint the head and body before attaching the arms and pack.
Pictures soon.

Question. Does Forgeworld make a Heresy era dreadnought? I was sure they did, but I can't find it on their site. I want a dreadnought for my army, but I can't bring myself to but one of the old RT ones. They're just not doing it for me.

Jake, AFAIK there have been no rumours of a Pre-Heresy dread. But, if the old armour marks they released have been successful, I certainly wouldn't put it past them!
It's funny now the old style missile launcher and flamer have been squeezed/shoe-horned into being 'pre-heresy'
(check out the FW release, a modern re-design of the old RT concept):
Yes, the backpacks haven't got any studs or poppers holding them in place, you just have to use your best judgement!
I wouldn't worry too much about the gorilla-esque posture, its synonymous with that miniature pack, and TBH I have never really heard anyone complaining about it.

Unlike some of the other RT stuff the Dread is just... funny looking. I can't dig it.

This wasn't a rumor, but an actual kit. It would have been released like 2 or3 years ago. Not actually a Heresy era Dread, just an earlier mark. The MK 1V they have looks similar to what I remember, but... maybe I imagined it? Or maybe there was a concept sculpt, but it was never put into production? Or maybe it's out of print?
The back packs are a bit of a pain because they really don't fit well at all, but I'm starting to like the hunched over posture now that I've put a few together.. It makes them look surprisingly dynamic.
All in all the kit is pretty fantastic. Especially compared to it's 2nd generation counter part which had very light details, no separate head and no extra options other than the combat knife.

Update!
I've finally got around to starting my army. I choose Star Phantoms because one of the things that got me interested in 40K was reading about the Badab War and the Star Phantoms Captain that ended it by shooting the leader of the traitors in the face. This was back in... 1995, in a small bit of flavor text in a Citadel miniatures catalog given to me by a friend of a friend who owned a Hobby train store.
My plan: I've been wanting to get back to a "simpler" vision of 40K for awhile, and with these new old models in hand I've decided to construct a Star Phantoms army. My goal is to build a Siege force based on the Imperial Armor 10 list, but I'll also make sure to build units that I can use in a normal marine army, since I want to be able to field some of the cool old metal Attack Bikes I've picked up.
I choose the Bell of Lost Souls paint scheme because... well, because the official scheme from IA 10 sucks. It's just really dull. I'm designating the unofficial scheme I've chosen "siege pattern".
Anyway, pictures! Taken with my ipad, so they suck. Sorry.
Here's a picture of the sprue, which is dark blue. I also picked up another squad on ebay (already assembled) which is white. I've seen dark red and green as well. Weird. Anyway, there's two other sprues full of extras. I'll take pictures later.
Here's a bundle of Tactical marines. I'm not a great painter, but I'm hoping I can get a better photo because I think these guys look pretty cool.
Here's a full rotation so you can see what the backs and sides look like. The backpacks don't really have a connection point, so the kind of set higher or lower than we're used to seeing marine packs.
Here's the Missile Launcher, Flamer and Srgt.
A 2nd shot of the sgt. He has a bionic eye and a crew cut. His hair and facial features aren't very detailed, but I think I did an okay job with them. I really dig the power fist. Its big and bulky and looks like it would hurt even without the energy field. For some reason it's a bit more convincing to me than modern power fists.
The whole squad, plus rhino.
More to come!

I've still got a few bits from these guys after selling off the bodies and I was surprised that the Forgeworld Umbra bolters are almost identical except for the magazine and grip being placed further back. It's the only part from this set that they reused, everything else was a resculpt.
That old powerfist is awesome too.

"refitting" is a good word for it. I feel like I'm going back and restoring an old car or patching up a favorite shirt. I haven't actually done either of these, but I imagine this is what it would feel like. Working with these old models is surprisingly fun, and reminds me of a time when 430K was less... grim dark and over the top and more sci-fi and British.

I love this army. I love how you are going old school all way with it. It's going too look so unique on the table top. Marine armies are a a dime a dozen but yours will turly stand out.
I'd love to see better pics. I can't really see all the details. What I do see looks good though!

They were deemed Heretics and the sisters took them out. There is a picture from either RT era or 2ed where a sister was torturing a rainbow marine.

Thanks. I'll get some better photos soon, plus some shots of the Devastator squad that I'm working on right now.
Is that bit about the Rainbow Marines canonical? I've seen the picture, but I've also heard th theory that it doesn't depict a SoB but rather a RT era mercenary character called Sister of mercy (or something like that.

As far as the sister thing the first thing you need to consider is the fact GW fluff changes and evolves. Case and point the Nercons. They are different this time then the last codex so the fluff changes. RT era fluff is very different from modern 5ed fluff.
From what I've found out is that female character could very well be the early predecessor for the sisterhood. She is just a very rough draft for the sisters that didn't get fleshed out until 2ed.
Another way to look at this is to apply current fluff backwards. We see a marine getting tortured by s female warrior that may have a very similar name to the current sisters. So we can assume it must be the sisters who wiped out the chapter as to take out a entire marine chapter you would need a lot of firepower. A single mercenary is obliviously inadequate in taking down a entire space marine chapter so we can surmise that it was indeed the sisters who did it as they have the firepower to do so.

- How big are the models in relationship to current marines? I know they're smaller, but I'm not sure how much smaller. Will current range weapons look out of place on them?
- Is the plastic brittle?
- For those of you who have painted the models before, do you have any advice?
Also, I'm having trouble deciding what paint scheme to use. I want to use these guys to start a new small marine army, but I'm not sure which army. I'm leaning toward a pre-Heresy army or a Badab war army. Those just feel right given the age and style of the models. But I'm not sure which one. I want something with a strong, identifiable color scheme. I'm willing to consider any suggestions. Right now I'm looking at Nova Marines, Star Phantoms (BolS version), Imperial Fists and Pre-Heresy World Eaters and Dark Angels, but (as I said) I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks,
Jake
That is such a good find. I wish I didn't sell all of mine all those years ago when the 'new' marines came out. But that was policy at the GW at the time, you had to use the new models for playing in store...-shrugs-
As it as been shown in many pictures I would suggest using helmet stripes. They really add charactor to the marines. I would love to see some RT era slogans on them like -kil kil kil- & -we fight for beer- but not everyone like's those. You can also add leg markings to show campaign badges.
I would suggest washing them like they where resin because the release agent they used back in the day weeped into the plastic. You can also carefully file down or sand off the studs on the left shoulder pad if you needed more room. It's also easy to make the 'trim' just use some small square plastic tubing. You can usually find it around the palstic card at a FLGS plasti-sctuct does alot of different kinds of tubing, plastic card, acrylic rods.
I can't wait to see what chapter you choose ( I like black DA's, but IF's are rather awsome also same with most of the badab war chapters) and the blog.... we demand pictures
Good luck with whatever you do and remember, pic's or it never happened =o].

Sighs, sorry but it was one picture of 'Sister Sin' shooting a RW. We don't know who sister sin is. We don't know if she was a Adeptus Sororitus, sister of silence or just a inquisitor in power armour. This is a internet myth that the RW's where taken out by the Sisters.
Remember this was back in RT era where the emperor still talked every now and again and ordered new marine chapters made, where the Chaos marines where just bad marines not traitor legions, and there where only 7 of the origional 20 First Founding Chapters, Squats, female assassins and inquisitors played nice together and it was a Imperial Fist Terminator who interposed himself when the Emperor attacked Horus' battle bunker during the first 'inter-legionarie war'. So honestly one pic does not a story make.
Sorry to derail your thread. The pic's are not working for me just boxes with red X's on them. Good choice on the Star Phantoms as they where the only chapter not dipicted with a colour scheme in the OLD RT era badab war article and marine chapter guide.
I can't wait to see the new pics. I just love the RT-era figgies from GW. They just ooze charactor except for the dreadnought, they look silly but that's because they where piloted by someone who was surgically implated in a suspension capsule and not just used by marine chapters. Most Imperial orginizations had access to them, marines, guard, inquisitors, Rogue Traders.... etc etc etc.
Great now the pics work...I hate my puter. The marines look awsome same with the rhino. I love the colours your chose for them. Are you plaing in making a whole army for them? I THINK I MIGHT have some of the missle launchers kicking around...no promises but I will look for you. Again great stuff so far can't wait to see more.

Fab, thanks for the kind words. I am planning a whole army, based around the Star Phantoms Special Character from Imperial Armor 10. This means at least 2 Devastator squads, which is part of why I need so many missile launchers.
I 'm planning on adding helmet stripes to my Devastator, Assault and Scout squads since I don't have room on the shoulder pads to differentiate them. I hadn't thought of using the lower leg for campaign markings, but that's a great idea. I think I will go for some helmet and shoulder pad graffiti as well. Cool idea.
As far as the fate of the Rainbow Warriors, I know fluff changes and is frequently retconned or expanded, but I'm curious if the Rainbow Warrior's fate has every been mentioned in official cannon, or if it is just a rumor based on that old drawing.

I'm really looking forward to the devastator squad. Those RT era heavy weapons were funky.
As for the Rainbow marines here is the most official (and modern) standing on it:
Here is quote a description of that artwork from WD292, introducing the Witch Hunter Codex:
The Rogue Trader art even shows a Battle Sister exacting that vengeance upon a Space Marine, so this seemed particularly appropriate (in fact, the Space marine is from the 'Rainbow Warriors' Chapter, and as we haven't heard of them for some time I guess the Sisters' mission was successful!).
To the OP if this side discussion is bothering you (This is your modeling thread after all) I'm quite ok in making a thread to fully discuss the scope of the topic elsewhere

Wooo! I just picked up a selection of RT era metal marines that I hope will become my Squad leaders and Heavy and Special weapon guys for my next two squads. I'll also be using one of them as Captain Androcles. In fact, several of the marines are the really old ones that look like they're holding some kind of musket bag pipe witha bayonette attached to it, so I may use them as the captain's power weapon weilding command squad!
Anyway, the Devestator Squad is half way done. I'm waiting on recieving two extra missle launchers to finish it up before moving on to their Razorback. After that I'll probably paint the captain and the Scout Squad.
Here's the list i'm going for:
HQ- Captain Androcles with Command Squad (in Razorback)
Elite- Devestator Squad 1 (10 men w'Missle Launchers, in Razorback)
Elite- Devestator Squad 2 (10 men w/Heavy Bolters, in Rhino)
Elite- Assault Terminators (using the super old Grey Knight models)
Troop- Tactical Squad with flamer, missle launcher and powerfist, in Rhino
Troop- Scouts (10 with Shotguns, TP homer)
Fast- 2 Attack Bikes
Heavy- 3 Predator Annihilators
That's the list I'm leaning toward. Not really competetive, but fun. I'll probably add a second Tactical squad with plasma and Hvy Bolter and a Librarian as my second HQ.
