The Tau codex has a few problems that stem directly from being a 4e to 5e translation.
1. Overcosted - Codex wide, the Tau are overcosted. Look at the statlines of Ork Boyz and Kroot Carnivores. Now look at the point costs. Well... that's that then.
2. Dated rules - Wonky 4e versions of rending codex wide, wargear that does nothing, wargear thats nearly useless, wargear regarding 'glancing hit table'
3. KP vs. VP - The Tau were built in the "Victory Points" era, and as a result, they have TONS of soft kill points that basically give away KP games.
If you can play through these disadvantages... more power to you, but overall, they tend to compound against you and result in a tough-to-play environment. I was winning 30% ish of my games when I only owned Tau.. I figured I still needed to adjust to 5e (I took a break at the end of 4e). Since I built my Daemons, I've been rolling face. Not a 'hey hey look at me' statement.. just a... it might be time to start exploring the artistic possibilities of painting and converting a new army!
