Jimsolo wrote:Something I noticed, that I like, is the purity seals. I like that you went with a color other than red for the wax. (I recognize that red probably wouldn't go too great on the already red armor, but still, it's different.) I've been playing around with that myself, and seem to find that, unfortunately, red seems to be the only color that works against my green marines.

You mentioned that it was a difficult process building up your red areas. Would you care to share how you do it? Everyone seems to do red a different way.

Red does seem to be the favourite colour for wax seals, but like you say it would just blend in with the red of the armour. I did a google search for Flesh Tearers and I saw someone paint their wax seals green (as well as the Marine's eyes). I thought that was too much of a stark contrast though. So I choose the purple which I think is still noticeable against the red but doesn't overpower it. It's Lich Purple, followed by a roughly 50/50 Lich Purple / Skull White mix on the raised section. Simple but effective.

As for the red, I don't do anything special. I water down Mechrite Red and paint that on until I get an even coat. It generally takes two coats now, but can be time consuming since I tend to be a bit of a slow painter. Following that I paint the armour Red Gore which only needs one coat. Later, after I've done the highlights on it, I use a Bhaal Red Wash. Using the spray gun would be quicker, although I'd then have to go back and paint the black sections. So neither way really has the advantage.

I can't take all the credit for the painting scheme since I based it on the Flesh Tearers that were featured in April's White Dwarf 376. I've made the odd tweak to it, but nothing major.

The black and red combo makes them look very striking; the neat paintjob makes them look downright impressive. Very well done.

Thanks much. I've seen other folks who have different ways of doing red, but I think I like the way yours looks a little better. I appreciate you sharing your technique.

Of course. I'm nicely surprised by the amount of positive comments my Marines have received. I don't consider myself an amazing painter, my aim is just to make them look as tidy and clean as possible. So I feel very honoured that they've got such a good response

Like I said in a previous post, I can't take all the credit for the scheme since it was feature in White Dwarf 376 (UK edition, I'm not sure if they're different elsewhere in the world). But anyway, here's my method. I'll go through how I do each section, rather then a strict order. I always water down my paints so they flow a little easier and the paint doesn't look as heavy.

Start with a Chaos Black undercoat. You'll probably want to tidy up the undercoat with a watered down Chaos Black since the spray usually misses the odd place.

Red Armour

Paint Mechrite Red (might take a few coats to get a nice, even finish)
Paint Red Gore
Edge highlight with Bleached Bone
Wash Baal Red (This darkens the armour a little, as well as toning down the highlights)

Black Armour

Highlight Codex Grey. (You can see on the photos where I highlight)

Metal Areas

Paint Boltgun Metal (Areas such as the chest crescent, boltgun sections, backpack grills and leg-joint areas)
Wash Badab Black
Highlight Mithril Silver

Leather Areas

Paint Scorched Brown (Any pouches or weapon straps)
Wash Badab Black
Edge highlight Snakebite Leather

Purity Seals (Paper)

Paint Khemri Brown
Wash Gryphonne Sepia
Paint Bleached Brown (Try to keep some recesses showing. It can be difficult since they're arn't really any on them, so just leave it where it looks appropriate)
Edge highlight Skull White (Try to keep this subtle)

Purity Seals (Wax)

Paint Liche Purple
Paint 50/50 Liche Purple and Skull White (Just the upper edge of the seal, leave the center circle)

Gold Areas

Paint 50/50 Scorech Brown and Shining Gold
Paint Shining Gold
Highlight Burnished Gold (I'm still experimenting with this, but there's a nice gold guide in White Dwarf 370 which I might try. I don't tend to do much gold on these since I want to reserve that for command and veteran units instead, but I've got a few areas of gold, such as the skulls on the legs of a few.)

Eyes

Paint Codex Grey
Paint Skull White
Wash Baal Red

Base

Apply Modeling Sand
Paint Bestial Brown (Try to cover all of the sand with this)
Overbrush Bubonic Brown (Overbrushing is like drybrushing, but don't wipe away all of the paint from the brush. You don't want to cover the sand, just apply the paint to the top of it so the previous colour still shows through)
Overbrush Bleached Bone
Paint the rim Khemri Brown (Probably needs to coats for an even finish)
Paint the rim Graveyard Earth

I think that's everything. It's a fairly simple scheme, which I think makes it all the more effective. It's also reasonably quick to do. (Depends on how quickly you paint of course.) I always paint two at a time, mainly because the red armour is time consuming and doing more than two at a time drives me crazy! You could use a spray gun for the red, which would be a lot quicker, but you'd still need to fill in some of the black areas afterwards.

Forgeworld does a transfer sheet for Flesh Tearers so I'll be using that instead. I'm quite relieved actually, wasn't looking forwards to attempting some freehand!

Just the Sergeant to do now. Also, I got my transfer sheer this morning, so I can add the chapter symbol to the shoulder pads. I've never applied transfers before, so this should be interesting!

Excellent Job on the black reach models they look great. The highlights on the black parts of their armor make them really stand out.

I got some decals from Forge World. But I'm having a real problem getting them to lie flat to the shoulder.

I've got another post on the subject.

These are really, really good. Very tight painting. I'm a huge fan of using a limited colour pallete for minis, I find it too distracting if there are reds and blues and greens and half a dozen other colours, but these are right up my street!
