If it makes you feel any better. When I was 21 I decided to serve a 2 year mission for my church overseas. Until that time I had collected and painted on and off throughout the years and aquired a fairly respectable collection of mini's that I had poured my heart and soul (and bank account) in to purchasing and painting. While I was gone, my father lost his job and my family fell in to dire financial straits. I returned to find out that everything I owned (including a sizable epic army) had gone the way of Ebay to help my parents keep their house. I was so depressed I wrote off the hobby and put it far from my mind.
A few years later however The Dawn of War series led me to reading a couple books, which eventually led to me purchasing "one squad", "just for the fun of it". Now two years later I have a 10,000 point painted army with my brand new thunderhawk on the way
Yeesh... While it's good that there are others who understand, it really bites that misery loves company. My army wasn't quite that big at around 5000 points, but still, when you put that kind of money, time, and more than a little of yourself into something you take pride in, it's just a step down from someone stealing your dog. As a hardcore dog person, my malamute is like my third kid. I just ordered a tac squad, and should soon see whether or not my shaky-arsed hands can actually do the detail work. The worst slap in the face would be my being unable to make 'em look good - gone the way of the buffalo like my oil painting hobby.

Not sure if shaky hands + dark eldar is necessarily a good idea. Marine models are stout with rounded edges. DE models are fragile and have lots of pointy bits.

PS just tried the link myself and it does work. The guy is called Christian Byrne and the army is Blood Wolves. Proper sweet.

Sorry to hear about your circumstances! Hopefully things will get a bit better. Space marines always help things get better.
If you're a fan of the Vanilla codex, but don't think that the Smurfs have enough personality - make up your own chapter! Provide your own personality in the way of fluff. Come up with a kickass paint scheme. Kitbash! Buy some Space Wolf heads (epic facial hair) from a bits website and use those for your sergeants / anyone else you deem worthy. Get creative.
When Captain Mega-Burns of the Bearded Brotherhood and his terminator retinue come pouring out of a personalized land raider, you'll be doubly as proud of them when they cut down the heathen hordes.

I've received several pm's from a lot of the wonderful folks here at Dakka, and several commented on how my situation was a swift kick in both cheeks. This karma stuff seems as though it has a little truth to it, though. I explained some of the after-the-facts to a few of them, and fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony. This may be TMI, or tl;dr to others, but to those interested here it is: I think that when she found out that she wasn't going to be riding the gravy train on biscuit wheels anymore she started looking up old boyfriends. Interestingly enough I found out later that dein arschloch she ran off with had told her that he was some kind of badass firefighter and worked security at some big hospital. I had half expected to see John Rambo in red suspenders the way she talked this stück der scheiße up to me. What I found to be fact was that while technically he was a firefighter, rather than being a professional or even dedicated individual working for an organized emergency response service, this 250 lb (but not the right 250 lbs to be a fireman) sack was basically the dispatcher for a one-truck, one-horse, one-light farming community, and washing the truck was about as close as he had ever come to being a "hero." He technically worked at the hospital too, though not as a security guard like he said, but rather working minimum wage part-time washing the linens at said hospital. I mean come on - This 30-year-old still lives with his parents, not because of an illness, financial, or even a life-scheiße-on-you setback. I, on the other hand, was jumping out of helicopters into enemy fire when I was 17 (in Bosnia, even if that dates me a little). In the end (and I can truly say this with a big grin on my face) she decided to jump the fence and landed in dogshit, which to me at least is not only karmic but more than a little poetic. After all of that, you would think I'd become a believer in the Space Elves From Space...

Wow... jumping out of helicopters... almost offsets the risk of getting shot.
ONLY do ultras if they're a mess around; I would use the SW dex as its more bang for your buck (and much more individualized). If you like basic troops, missiles, psychic powers, and a few heroes holding the line, SW are for you.

Yeah, I know, I know. You can't go much more dark side than the blue-suiters. I think I'm pretty well set on them for two reasons - they're the most generic, and therefore not easily pigeonholed to a particular fighting style, and secondly they're pretty much universally booed, which brings psychology into play. It's like I said before: Most FLGS games I played in, the only thing I saw more groans over than the Ultrasmurfs was getting beaten by the Ultrasmurfs. Since I'm a fan of Eastern philosophy (striving above all to defeat your opponent not only physically, but mentally and spiritually) as well as an all around fan of the dick move (if your opponent is angry or discouraged, he/she is not thinking clearly, and therefore not able to fight effectively) I may as well build a 'smurfs army. That way I'll have the all around advantages of the versatility of a vanilla Space Marines army, with the added psychological perk of having my opponent either underestimate me in thinking me either arrogant for fronting the blue-suiters, or overestimating (even subconsciously) themselves when facing such a universally panned foe. I know that whole statement probably sounds pretty damned arrogant in and of itself, but I was a career soldier, so sue me. It's ever so much more fun to play the cerebral assassin than it is to be a blunt instrument, so long as you don't lull yourself into overconfidence. Some of the most strategic gaming I've seen, after all are from Ork players who play their armies like sledgehammer lined with old lace (i.e. - dick moves). No need to despair and think me a lost cause, though. On the side I'll still be building and developing my second force (probably my DIY guys). Rich

I do love me some Angry Marines... I might be able to get away with using thunder wrenches as "counts as", but I'd never get away with the Banner of F--- You.... ++++ Loading excerpt from Tales of Valor: Reports from the Ork Invasion of Calamitis Prime. ++++ The PDF sold their lives dearly to stop the greenskin advance upon our primary Hive, but on the horde came. There would be no escape but for the Planetary Governor, whose escape shuttle was prepped to leave before the attack began. As our leader left us to die we prayed to the Emperor for deliverance while we sold our lives to protect his works. Glory be to his swift answer. A yellow Thunderhawk, identified as Necrogoth Fuckshit, descended like a falling star, the much larger transport vehicle crushing the smaller one as it landed on the same pad, and through the fire and smoke the mighty figure of a Space Marine strode forth. I will never forget the seething expression on his face as he looked upon us, upon the Hive, upon the xenos. The Marine did not pause, he drew his chainsword and charged down the stairs with a battlecry upon his lips, screaming "FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-" or something of the sort, a cry with no end. Even as he disappeared into the Hive we heard him clearly, even as we saw the small yellow figure leap from the Hive into the throng of green below we heard him. Drop pods followed as more Marines smashed into the horde, more yellow armored Marines echoing the endless cry. The xenos were crushed utterly, and still screaming in rage the Space Marines ran up the Hive once more, to where the Governor still stood staring at the crushed wreckage of his escape shuttle. The Marines poured into their Thunderhawk, but the Marine from before ran right up to the cowardly official, and ended his warcry at last, his finger pressing painfully against the man's forehead. "-UUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOU!" Rather unceremoniously, the Governor was then pitched off the top of the Hive, with his underwear pulled up over his head. +++++ Thought for the Day: To question is to doubt. +++++

True... Oh so true...
As soon as I can build a large enough force to have an Ultra's strike force, then I'm going to start on my DIYs. The way I've figured it so far, I've modeled their chapter structure loosely after a Roman Cohort, made 'em sorta like the Templars (only towards Chaos), and with close ties to the Ordo Malleus (as in daemonhunters). That way I get to choose the paintjob, and they're not all "Heilige scheiße wir sind verrückt!!!" like the Exorcists. As a big fan of history, I always liked how pragmatic the Roman military view was. They saw any issues or obstacles not with fear or superstition, but as just another problem requiring a practical solution. I'm still working out their fluff to explain why exactly they don't show up in Imperial history, but their history is starting to come along nicely, as well as their system, subsector, and a map of their fortress monastery (I was making them as a custom chapter for Deathwatch, but really liked what fell into my lap and decided to expand them onto the tabletop...).

"Oomans is pink and soft, not tough and green like da Boyz. They'z all da same size too, so they'z always arguing about who's in charge, 'cos there's no way of tellin', 'cept fer badges an' ooniforms an' fings. When one of dem wants to lord it over da uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da uvver arf don't, so 'e 'as ta hit 'em all anyway or run fer it. Wot a lot of mukkin' about if yer asks me...
