Hey all,
I've been lurking on this forum for a while now, and figured it was high time that I get up off of my ass and register (and contribute!). I just wanted to let you all know, if you think you're having a crappy day, listen to this...

I've been wargaming since 2003, and had a decent group that I would play with (in SD, USA). I had a pretty decent Necron army that I usually played out from under the Nightbringer, and won a few/lost a few, just like any other bloke. Then In 2007 I had my first MS attack (while still IN Afghanistan), and got my copy of the home game with a box of Rice-a-Roni (The San Fransisco Treat!). I soon came to find out that while I was deployed the old lady had apparently been selling off all of my stuff, and decided to take my Rusty Boys with her. Top that off with cleaning out my bank account and leaving me and my two little girls homeless, you're left with a recipe for awesome!.

This isn't, however, a bid for pity or a handout. It's to illustrate the point that there's ALWAYS someone who's got it worse than you out there, and that one should NEVER underestimate the power of geekdom! Now that I'm in a better situation, I'm going to start building an army again, though I don't think I'll run Necros again. Every time I see a monolith it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm leaning toward Space Marines (the dark side, yeah I know ), but am not enough of a boy scout to play Ultrasmurfs. Any suggestions?

Ave Imperator,

Rich

Wow, glad you have managed to bounce back.

In terms of armies - CSM are pretty cool with a few good builds and plenty of conversion options as well. What kind of playstyle are you looking at doing? Any thoughts on themes or anything?

Welcome!

As for the Chapter to choose, I'm a sucker for the Dark Angels. So that would be my suggestion, I guess.

Thanx for all of your wonderful suggestions!
It was suggested to me to give the space wolves a try (I'm Asatru). I've been much feeling the lure of chaos, too. As for style of play, I'm used to spamming troops, popping my Lord into the midst and res'ing the ones that haven't already 'been back'. By that point I've normally gotten my 'lith in range to gauss fleshy hindquarters. I dunno. I haven't quite figured what other type of force to run...
I've thought about going the DIY route, and would love to run my homebrew chapter I pulled from where the light of Holy Terra doesn't reach. They're pretty much Codex, but with close ties to the Inquisition, because let's face it - nobody expects a Spanish Inquisition!
Thanks to you all once again for your wonderful suggestions. I think I'm going to browse through a few of GW's army articles and see what would be up my alley...

Go space wolves or blood angels and then custom your chapter army around those codexes as well.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

Thanx to everyone for the warm welcome and plentiful suggestions. I'm reading up as many codices as I can get my hands on (as in actual books borrowed from some friendly local wargamers). So far running straight vanilla marines seem to offer the most as far as versatility, but aren't "quirky" enough to give them personality. The 'Wolves point of view, as far as fluff goes, is pretty close to home. Chaos, though, doesn't seem like it would make you feel dirty for playing dirty. I'll keep reading and see what would feel more like my "I was the turkey the whooole time" style of play.

P.S. - Space Elves From Space are automatically a no-go. Even when I was 12 and playing D&D I hated elves. Too uppity...

Hey man,

Never been in the life situation you've been in, but I've been in the game situation. I ended up taking a modified Angry Marines route, using the Chaos, Vanilla (Regular SM), and SW codices to represent one army with a standout paint scheme. SW are a ton of fun, but you get some flak for being OP. Chaos is the opposite, but still fun to play. If SW hits home, GO FOR IT! Always nice to have another brother from fenris.

Cheers!

YOU ALL!

Welcome! And on a side note, thank you for serving. Just sorry about all the grief!

Nothing wrong with marines or the dreaded boys in blue...so long as you enjoy it and can deal with the (not so) gentle mocking. I made my own ultrasmurfs successor chapter not too long ago. Pure white armour, all codex and all idealistic. I wanted to make a 'green' chapter just right for my opponent to enjoy squashing...and so I would not feel too bad when they got blasted to steaming bits.

I admire your perseverance to move on without self pity. That requires the personality of a real mature person. I do hope you get your army soon and yeah, I would stay away from Necrons as well if I went through the same thing you did. Though I am not a religious person in any sense of the word, I do hope that good things (blessings in christian terms I believe) come your way. Welcome to the Dak!

You know, I think you just helped my make my decision. Most FLGS games I played in, the only thing I saw more groans over than the Ultrasmurfs was getting beaten by the Ultrasmurfs. Since I'm a fan of Eastern philosophy (striving above all to defeat your opponent not only physically, but mentally and spiritually) as well as an all around fan of the dick move (if your opponent is angry or discouraged, he/she is not thinking clearly, and therefore not able to fight effectively) I may as well build a 'smurfs army. That way I'll have the all around advantages of the versatility of a vanilla Space Marines army, with the added psychological perk of having my opponent either underestimate me in thinking me either arrogant for fronting the blue-suiters, or overestimating (even subconsciously) themselves when facing such a universally panned foe.

I know that whole statement probably sounds pretty damned arrogant in and of itself, but I was a career soldier, so sue me. It's ever so much more fun to play the cerebral assassin than it is to be a blunt instrument, so long as you don't lull yourself into overconfidence. Some of the most strategic gaming I've seen, after all are from Ork players who play their armies like sledgehammer lined with old lace (i.e. - dick moves). No need to despair and think me a lost cause, though. On the side I'll still be building and developing my second force (probably my DIY guys).

Like my old man always said, "Son, if you can't be famous, be INFAMOUS. Mutley, I salute you...

Sucks to hear that man - hopefully it's the mark of a new beginning for ya.

If it makes you feel any better. When I was 21 I decided to serve a 2 year mission for my church overseas. Until that time I had collected and painted on and off throughout the years and aquired a fairly respectable collection of mini's that I had poured my heart and soul (and bank account) in to purchasing and painting. While I was gone, my father lost his job and my family fell in to dire financial straits. I returned to find out that everything I owned (including a sizable epic army) had gone the way of Ebay to help my parents keep their house. I was so depressed I wrote off the hobby and put it far from my mind.

A few years later however The Dawn of War series led me to reading a couple books, which eventually led to me purchasing "one squad", "just for the fun of it". Now two years later I have a 10,000 point painted army with my brand new thunderhawk on the way
