Wow, it hadn't even occurred to me the database might have been damaged. Thinking about that gives me shivers.

Thanks to Adam for all the hard work getting the site back up, and to you guys keeping us in the loop.

I returned from my extended vacation, and the first thing I was going to do was take care of your add to BT+ (I got your email). So, trying to get into the site to add you was, actually, my first notice that it was down.

Adam's working on it, everyone. Tonight marks 3 nights in a row he's devoted to the site.

This makes me a sad panda.

I can only imagine the frustration this is causing the operators of BT. I know how furious I'd be. It wouldn't be pretty.

I wonder, are they considering a new host yet?

All that is up to Adam. I don't know what he's thinking.

I can't speak for anyone but myself. For me, though (and, admittedly, I'm not the one who has to reload all the software, etc.), I'm just taking a "sh** happens" attitude and not letting it get to me. There are few things in this world getting bent out of shape over. This is one of them.

Also, I've got about 6 or 7 unfinished trades. So, I'm not just "blowing smoke."

I would doubt, though, that Adam's considering a new host. AFAIK, this is the first real problem he's had with them. We've had a number of F* ups in the past with other hosts, too. So, it's been a nice change. Hell, this one updates it's freaking security, for God's sake. LOL We've had others that DIDN'T! : )

Sorry if this the wrong time/wrong place to ask. I have never seen/used bartertown, but I have seen people refer to it, obviously here. Could someone give me a quick synopsis of what it is/how it operates.
My guess, a trading site for wargaming/any games, but no auctions like ebay. Much more informal.
Oh and I hope it is up for you all soon

It's basically like the Dakka Swap Shop, but much, much larger, with subforums for all kinds of wargames, as well as video games, roleplaying, CCG's, etc.

Also, our staff are all well versed in trading, shipping, etc.
Not to disrespect Dakka staff, mind you, but I believe that even they would say that we're overall more knowledgeable on trading and the associated areas (shipping, packing, etc).

Also, while Dakka has a less strict "consequence" schedule for poor trade habits (very few people see their accounts here limited for anything short of outright scamming), BTown has an extensive-yet-not-overwhelming ruleset for trading on the site. All of our staff is expected to keep a good trade reputation and practice positive trading habits. Unlike many sites online (NOT referring to Dakka), our staff is held to a HIGHER standard (for trading, in this case) than everyone else.

Bartertown's been around since 1996. We're the oldest gaming trade site online. Every year, we learn more, refine ourselves, and get better. Once we're back up & running, you should come check us out.

Oh... and we do, in fact, have an auction section, as well. : )

I'll have some of that.

Bartertown is second to none in regard to trading. Never got too deep into trading on their website (I'm actually scared of the system ), but are by far the most reputable.

If you're scared of the system, then you're probably over analyzing it. ; )

Our "system" is basically as follows:

"Arrange the specifics of the trade however it works for you and your trade partner. Don't exchange certain items, don't rip each other off, communicate thoroughly and don't post business ads if you aren't an advertiser."

It's a bit simplified, mind you, but that's the crux of it. : )

Bartertown is a wonderful resource run by a bunch of stand-up people who I trust. The system they've refined over the years works (nearly) flawlessly, or it always has for me. And woe betide the bad trader.

Hey All,

Of all the things I like about Bartertown the one thing that I like the most is that it’s a mentors to people for trading. The site instills thought through good trade practices to insure safe trading. Is that cool or what?

Some other great thing I like. You have a awesome database of reference and BTR’s to help you filter out being potentially fraud. It’s got a very cool messaging system that allows you sort your trader for easy trading. It’s got ton on trading knowledge.

Maybe you can share what you like about Bartertown. I would really like to here.

One more thing;
I know there are a lot of open trades right now, so let’s just be patient and let the Admin restore a great site.

The best thing about Bartertown is it's reference tools for trader feedback. Much better and easier to follow that Ebay's or any other sites. That tool by itself, through user accountability, pretty much insures that most people are on the up and up. Add to it that the staff is very responsive to problems and take meaningful and proactive steps to insure people behave responsibly. For the most part though, the site simply polices itself through its trade reference tools.

I'm sure the owner and admin there (who is paying for the hosting and has advertisers he'll have to credit from his own money) is even more disturbed by it being down than you. Most tabletop gaming websites are NOT the primary source of income for their owners and are worked on when they have real life spare time; I'm sure he's working on it as fast as he can.

Any chance Dakka mods can allow a thread for people to try to reconnect to bartertown users whom people have trades with?

I know someone tried to create one in Swap Shop, but it got shut down because it got derailed quickly by "What happened to Bartertown!??" posts.

This actually sounds like a grand idea since I have a few pending trades there myself. Once B-town is back in business we could just lock the thread. This way everyone's not as worried about getting their stuff in time for big events.

I've always wondered that myself. Whenever I've needed to juggle more than three or four trades, I find myself having to make an excel spreadsheet for them. So the idea of having 8 or 10 trades in the works at once staggers me. I'd probably ship my ork guy some IG and ship my IG guy a box of styrofoam peanuts, I'd get so flustered.

But back on topic. Or, rather, back on off-topic.

I also love Bartertown for the fact that it keeps the "politics" of gaming pretty well separated from the business at hand: trading junk I don't want anymore for junk I do. I've never posted 'looking for finecast hive guard' and had to deal with someone responding with a rant about how much finecast sucks, for instance. It's possible my trading partner is laughing all the way to the post office ("I can't believe he wants this finecast crap!"), but I won't ever know about it. It keeps my mood pretty positive and upbeat as a result.

@extropy-
Me, too.
I find myself writing details on index cards if I'm conducting more than 3 trades at once. Even when I sold of a TON of stuff earlier this year (or was it late last year? Hmmm)., I used a spreadsheet AND index cards. LOL

Yes. We try to keep trading and discussion separate. There is plenty of Finecost hate to go around, but we keep it to our dedicated discussion forums.
