The attiude of "it's not canon!" baffles me utterly.
The fact we know what a Slann is and what a Daemon is and what a Sigmar is and what happpened 3500 years ago in a fictional world is because of the fluff. The toy soldiers element of the game makes up probably 20% or less of the actual page content of the game. You can model anything you like. Stick it in your living room and use it as a conversation piece. Then that's solely yours. But when you play a game based around an intellectual property with other people you have to contend with their opinions. There's no reason to use models at all, frankly. You could use coins or cardboard squares or dirty socks, and if you and your pals are okay with that, knock yourselves out. Not everyone will be, however.

What you could say is that the Slaan isn't really a Slann, but a Lord of Change disguised as one.
Tzeentch, in his ever scheming ways, has sent a Lord of Change to disguise as a Slaan and gain control over some feral Lizardmen. If I'm not mistaken, there's a group of ferals in the Dragon Isles.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Duke, would it really bother you that much that someone had some homebrew fluff you found silly? So much you wouldn't play a game with them?
I don't think the creators of the game care that much whether we follow their fluff, and it will always confuse me why players do.

I don't know about that. My dark elves seem to get re-rolls to hit all game long against high elves.
Dwarves seem to dislike orcs and goblins.
Lizardmen? Meh, they hit everyone just about the same.
IMO, Lizards hate of chaos is just show. The saurus are just nodding as the slaan preaches.

GW couldn't give a crap if people are buying stuff, but people don't answer to GW when they choose to play or not play games. You seem to like to model. So to flip it back, do you mind playing against people who use pieces of paper in place of models? Just squares they draw lines through and base sizes that match the real ones. I'm sure some people would not play against that even though they could have labels on them saying exactly what they were, it just wouldn't "feel" right.
OR, would you mind if someone said they were playing the version 7 rules of a particular race because they liked it better? Again, that's totally something people can do if they like. I know some people would have a problem with it, however.
And someone could come up with some Space Marine time-travelling Lizardmen Chaos with 2 Emperors (Slann) wearing diapers of the Old Ones fluff. Even if all the rules were the standard LM, I personally would not be so inclined to play that game.
There's all kinds of stuff people don't want to play that's completely legal. Cheese being a perfect example. If you make it not as fun for the other person, they MIGHT not want to play. If the other person likes the immersive fluff, and feels your army is completely outside the bounds of that, they may not be interested in playing. If you got a perfectly GW-fluffed army, no cheese, no body odor, but someone just doesn't like you for whatever reason, they don't have to play you. This is a personal preference and arguing it isn't going to change it, unfortunately.

What Duke said. I like the fantasy and 40k settings, that's why I play this game and not any other game type. If someone violates that, I just kind of find it annoying and try my hardest not to play them.
There was a guy at my local GW that was dead set on Chaos GK. I explained to him that in no way can that work fluff wise. He didn't care about the fluff, so I didn't care to play him.

There's a difference between what an army is or isn't according to fluff & what an army is according to the rules.
If you have an idea for your personal fluff about the army and conversions that go along with it, thats really your personal fun. No one cares my High Elf general is at an outpost preventing pirates from entering Lustria, that my Skaven are going through a Marxist revolution, or my Dark Elves live in Cathay.
That being said, if your asking a fluff-wise question, you're going to get just as many eye brows raised saying your Dark Elves are a faction that has turned their back on Malekith and are guarding an Empire town and have opened a childrens hospital. Thats all the people (like me) who say this idea runs against fluff.
Being anal about the fluff idea (only for commenting)- Defense of Itza is likely something only thats able to be done by Kroak (the mummy figure). Back then there were much more Slann & I believe a lot sacrificed themselves to help him cast the spell (they are connected telepathically via the geomantric web). So by what I know of the fluff, I don't think your idea would work cannon. But like I said earlier, that doesnt really matter.
IMHO the best way to do it would be any Skink priests/Slann are changlings or something and have been able to exert themselves over lost Saurus somewhere. Whether in the Dragon Isles, Southlands, Cathay, etc. Theoretically, there should (or could) be Lizardmen pockets left all over the world.
edit: took a while to write that & some people do care if the fluff is waaay out. Also I forgot to mention a guy posted at lustriaonline a long time ago with his Demonic LM army (pretty much just horns). He never posted many pics though.

If you really want to make your Chaos-themed LM, I say go for it. If some people don't like your fluff-reasoning, meh, there are other people out there who will like it. Heck, if GW likes the idea, they may just very well retcon it a later edition.
