i find in most games as long as you declare who has what, and support that on your army list (so if its requested it backs up your earlier statment) then most people dont mind. ive been to tournaments where ive used flamers/grenade laucnhers/meltas etc as plasma guns on my gaurd, by identifying which unit had what, and by providing an army list (a readable one!) to my opponent so he could refrence what had what gear and so on.

in the end its just plastic or metal models representing your codex written army. as long as your as clear and transparant as possible you should have no issues. if someone does make a stink even after the above, you probally dont want to play them anyway because safe bet is they are sore winners/losers, and will likley find other things during the game to argue about as well.

If there's another section in the book that reference WYSIWYG for non characters, please point me to the right page. As it stands, I've only ever had lenient opponents, and I treat my opponents the same as long as both of us know what is actually on the table.
The rule is in all the codexes. Generally, I believe, under the heading 'Using The Army List'.

I hadn't thought of checking that, but upon looking in my IG codex under that section and all the other "non fluff" sections at the back, I couldn't find it. Either way, WYSIWYG has never been an issue at any of the tourneys I've been to (and certainly not at any friendly game), and I use the OP's logic on many of my vehicles. That is, they have basically every little bit and gubbin crammed on somewhere, and I just let my opponent know what it's got and show him my list. Even worse now that armored treads are gone...

I will split your thoughts open!

WYSIWYG is to prevent players fromtaking a space marine with a bolter and saying, this is a chapter master with termy armour strom shield and chainfist with melta bombs and digi weapons.or,as my 8 year old brother did, this is calgar and this scout is lysander and this bolt pistolis actually a combi-plasma,flamer,lascannon,melta,orbital bombardment and demolisher cannon all in one,or something along those lines
