no I'm sorry I cannot confirm any rumours of actual flight or even flight capabilities. My family and fiance have stated that they prefered the look when it was just a skeleton of mdf and bronze rods, they fail to agree to my my counter argument of "but it wouldn't make a very impressive wargames miniture unless i finish it?"

Not only have I just discovered that the tubes of strepsil throat losenges that have been sat on my desk for months and I udes as engine pods in the orignal mock up photo's would have been perfect for battery compartments but i have yet to figure out why the lights in the bomb bay and tail wing arn't working
I am replacing the stupid tiny batteried with a big 8.4V 1100MaH airsoft AEG battery that aught to fix things... I hope
You guys recon a 8.4V battery will be able to run 12V motors?

I'm having a really hard time with the electrics at the moment
Here's the problems
1 the copper rods in the wing connectors are only touching the brass tube intermitantly so the supply is getting cut off sporadicaly
2 the lights in the bomb bay and tail wings are not lighting up.
3 removing the crappy little calculator batteries and replacing with my airsoft gun battery has improved matters only slightly.
Do i need to stop utilising the brass tube as a conductor and run wires?
I don't understand at all the 2 lights in each wing are getting power as are the electric motors and they're all working so there has to be a circuit.....

I'd guess it's probably the brass, it's been a while since I looked at electrics, but I seem to recall brass being only about 30% as effective as copper for conductivity.

Is it possible to use the copper rods for the main part of the circuit, and have wires coming from those?
I guess it depends on where exactly you have copper/brass/gizmos.
edit: and yeah, a quick internet search tells me that brass has 28% of the conductivity of copper, so that does seem to be the issue.

The main structure is all brass the only copper elements are the pegs that fit into the wings. I'll have to superglue the wings into place and remove the magnets, that'll give me the room to run wires. that's the only real problem as far as I'm aware

Ahh, for some reason I was thinking it was mainly copper with brass bits, guess I haven't been paying attention
If the connectors are copper, could you run wires to those, one set inside the body, one set in the wings?

Steve, could you just solder copper wire ALONG the brass rods? It won't look as pretty, but you are going to skin it over right? All in all, a marvelous project! Do you have previous experience designing and assembling aircraft? Or are you just "winging" it? Oh! the puns! They hurt my head!
Can't wait to see more!

I have no experience designing anything but I do watch an awefull lot of documentaries and Mythbusters because I like them and I vaguely know what an aerofoil should roughly look like... I do have a fair bit of experience turning other peoples fesigns into models being an architectural modelmaker for five years so the design bit was fun.
the brass rod runs through the wing skeleton so it's not really going to work but i can drill a hole through the tube and run the wire inside.... No wit that's not going to work because i have multiple bulbs along the length, maybe I'll just run the wires and have done with it.

Do architects still need models made? It seems like software has taken that job. That would be the best job. What did you have to do? look at blueprints and build a scale model with foamcore?

nahhh most of the time we used perspex for everything, it taskes paint better, cuts better, looks better. the amount of 1mm thick perspex I lasercut in that job is insane.
There's something very different about a 2d computer render and a 3d representation. 3D stuff feels more real, if you wanna change the view you just move your head. and the rapid prototype thing has actualy meant more modelmakers are needed to finish the surface nicely and paint the things.

Hah that question's been the basis for more than one dissertation in its time! Software's good when dealing with people who also use software themselves but for a lot of people they can get their heads round a physical model much easier than a picture on a screen. Plus a physical model has a presence and character that a CGI model can't replicate. Long story short, software and models are both tools for the job of communicating a design, they both have their uses and place.

Ahhhh! Plexiglass (sorry Americans tend to use a brand name as the generic moniker) I had to look it up lol. I've cut my thumb really damn deep once using a utility knife to cut that stuff. I can see how using a laser would make it much much easier

well the electrics in this model officialy hate me. I replaced all the brass tube connections with real wire which means gluing the wings in place and one set of lights worked, Just one set. I rejig it a little and now just one light works.
I really don't know what to do next. Because something works there must be a complete circuit But if there's a complete circuit why isn't everything else working too????????? and why arn't there angry ork emo cons!!!!
I am going to have to experiment with more power and see if that's the problem. at the moment I'm attempting to run 13 grain of rice bulbs and 2 12v electric motors. I am using a 8.4V 1100MaH airsoft gun battery which does run the motors when I tested it (I basicaly ran wires straight from the battery and touched them on the motor electrodes
Oh and the fiance bumped into the bomber last night knocking it on the floor which broke the switch so I hard wired it on, and split the piece of mdf that the wing is glued to so that was soaked in superglue and clamped back in place...... I am going to experiment with a 12V battery of some sort..... Might not have enough space inside the main fusalage.

Okay I have a question for any of you electricaly minded peoples out there. In a paralel circuit is it important to have resistors? I have wired this thing together and it's just not working apart from one light bulb?
when I isolate a part of the circuit that part works, I isolated 3 bulbs and they're fine, three bulbs and a motor and they're dim and three bulbs and 2 motors the motors are slow and the bulbs are barely on... do I retire the airsoft 8.4V battery and try to find a 12v that will fit inside or wire up another airsoft battery to double the amps but leave the Volts alone?

I can't answer the resistor question, but if you get a bigger battery, you could hide it in a large base. And either cover it up, but paint it to look like an old out-building or something!

I did think about that. and I may have to conceed defeat if I can't find a solution. I know its silly and childish but I'd like the lights and jet intakes to still work if I'm holding it away from it's base

Could you use a bunch of little watch batteries in a stack and put them in the fuselage? You can get a pack of them from G&Ts for like nothing, just stack those bad boys up to get the required voltage?

I tried that with calculator batteries, two stacks of 4 3v batteries wired together for 12V and double amps but they dies soo quickly (but now I think about it that was when I was utilising the brass tube..... Hmmmmm
Maybe I can seperate parts of the circuit and run them off different sources.

Right been a while but I have been paid and bought some stuff, I couldn't find any 8 cell aa battery packs so I took a 4 cell and cut it in half then taped it around 8 batteries and teste the circuit, some things lit up others didn't.... what a shocker 12 volts and still nothing works right... I'm so frustrated that I am intending to just place the batteries in a base and run wires up to the model... dammit
oh and I am going to isolate certain patrs of the circuit to run seperatly the only problem is that i now have to un-solder the motors and lights whilst they're glued into the structure which won't be easy....hope fully within a week or two I should have working electronics then i can finish up adding the skin and actualy work on the important bits, like guns and bombs! and Orks
