To the tau player:
As I have seen in earlier battle reports, you are exceptionally good with your army, however in this game I feel you lost in your 1st turn
jy2 played you from the beginning once you came on, In my opinion, broadsides should had avoided your main obj (the one you wanted) like the plague, and forced your opponent to chose between objectives. However, you stacked everything up (with limited firing lanes) and made the decision for him. If you placed your broadsides on the far right (at least 2 squads), then I would say he wouldn't get it with a measly purifier squad. Also, when Crowe charged you, you had to play agressively with the kroot and move them foward, if you did this, then kroot would have to assualt them away from your lines, instead of jumping straight from them to your suits like he did, I might of even tried to surround the thing, to stop him from disembarking.
my 2 cents, maybe more review when I have more time

WOW that was pretty crazy, sorry I didn't catch that it was DOW. After those first couple turns you could see the came slowly leaning towrds a grey knight win, then once crowe reached his lines I had a feeling it was all over. Its a shame you weren't able to take out those transports, bet it makes you wish you had pathfinders ya?lol I think your idea of making two man BS teams with ASS then adding a pathfinder squad might be a good idea that prob would have drastically changed the flow of battle here.
Credit to the Grey Knight player for a great game though, cheeky move with the parry! Do you think your strategy to use the Dreadnaughts came in handy? They did manage to wipe two units of BS from the game

Another great report and a game with the most cunning use of Crowe I think I've yet seen. In fairness, I think both mission and deployment suited the Grey Knights but the Tau, possibly as a consequence, never really seemed to get a cohesive attack going.

Thank you, SabrX, for the game and also for giving your perspective of the game. If you don't mind, I'm going to use your comments on the game in the Post-game Analysis.
POST-GAME ANALYSIS:
Tau: (by SabrX)
SabrX wrote:
Thanks for posting the battle report jy2.
Ouch! One of my worst game plays.
I was plagued with bad luck. My two Kroot squads were forces to outflank on the left. I made a lot of penetrating hits, but jy2 saves 95% of them, and that’s a lot considering how many times my Suits penetrated and glanced. His dice were hot! The ones that did usually get past his cover save ended up being shaken or stun. Jy2 didn’t fail a single fortitude psychic test. On turn 3, I fired 4 Railguns, 4 Missile Pods, 2 rapid firing plasma rifles into one smoked purifer Rhino, but jy2 made all his cover saves. I then assaulted it with 45 Str4 attacks and 6 Crisis Suit attacks. I only manage to land a single glancing blow, which downgraded to a shaken. On turn 4, there were 4 purifiers out in the open. Jy2 predicted they wouldn’t last after my shooting. 12 Smart Missile System shots, 30 rapid firing Kroot, and 6 rapid firing Fire Warriors later, 1 manages to survive. Crowe was hot. In the beginning he assaulted a squad of Kroots. Out of 45 attacks, I forces 9 armor saves. Crowe fails 4 of them, but parry and roll 4 6’s!
This was my second time fielding 9 Broadsides. I made a couple mistakes moving them on the board. I moved one squad of Broadsides on top the left hill, assuming they could get a clear shot through the “Shrine of the Aquila” terrain piece. Later on, jy2 exploited their limited vision by moving his forces far enough forward where my Broadsides couldn’t see them. Thus, they had to forgo shooting on turn 2 and move to a better firing position. A second Broadside team moved into the Shrine of the Aquila, but only 1 could make it to the 2nd floor. Once again, the Shrine of the Aquila foiled their vision. They didn’t have many vehicles to shoot at other than the lone Rhino in the middle and the Rhino on the far right. The one Broadside team that did have a clear shot was deployed in the middle and out in the open. Unfortunately on turn 2, they suffered 33% casualty and failed their moral test, running off the board.
Throughout the game, the Crisis Suits were doing most of the damage. Thanks to JSJ, they could spring out, get a clear view to shoot at vehicles, and jump back into the Shrine. Unfortunately, the Shrine didn’t completely block TLOS. There was one open door, facing jy2’s dreadnoughts. It also didn’t help that I failed 5/7 dangerous terrain test, killing whole suits.
My Piranhas did squat. I was gambling they would survive long enough to contest the far right objective. In hindsight, I should have placed the second objective closer to the left and used my Piranhas to roadblock jy2’s Rhinos. Perhaps I should field 2 x 2 Piranhas, boosting their chances of survival.
In hindsight, there were two things I would have done differently. I would have placed both objectives close to each other, making it easier to guard. I also would have infiltrated all 4 Kroot Squads with a triple layer defense. This would have stalled Crowe for a few turns. I also would have moved all 9 Broadsides towards the middle and out in the open, where they would have good field of vision. They would also be far enough forward where if they failed a moral test, they have a chance not running off the board.
Despite the outcome, I’m still confident that 3 x 3 Broadsides without Advance Stabilization System can still work. I just need more practice and better placement. One alternative idea is to deploy one squad on the extreme left, second squad in the middle, and third squad on the extreme right. This would make it more difficult for my opponents to hide their vehicles out of TLOS and for my opponent to split his/she wants to neutralize all three.
If I did upgrade to Advance Stabilization System, I would reduce the numbers to 3 x 2 Broadsides. Advance Stabilization System takes up 1 Battle Suit support system slot, which means no Target Lock other than the squad leader. 3 Broadside squads with Advance Stabilization System can shoot up to 6 different targets, which isn’t bad against most mech armies. One less Broadsides means more points for other units such as Pathfinders (neutralize those pesky cover saves!) or Piranhas. The only time where I would need 9 Broadsides is against crazy vehicle spam armies such as IG, Dark Eldar, Razor-spam, or in this case 5 Grey Knight Dreadnoughts and 5 Rhinos.
Lesson learned, better placement with Broadsides, and sacrifice more kittens to the dice gods!
Well played jy2. Congrats for scoring a victory against the Greater Good.
Grey Knights:
Going into the game, despite my thumping at the hands of Tau last time, I still felt pretty good. SabrX's army was somewhat intimidating, but I have enough confidence in my army that I felt I would give anyone a tough game, 9 railguns including. Although I didn't have any AP 1/2 guns, I felt that volume of fire would do the trick this game. 5 dreads, 20 shots, 18 hits, 15 wounds, 2.5 dead broadsides a turn if I concentrated my dreads fully on his broadsides. Or if I fired at his suits, that's 5 fireknives dead each turn. And I knew he was going after my transports first. He had to. My purifiers are a much more dangerous threat than the dreads. Thus, my dreads had almost free reign throughout the game.
What I wasn't prepared for was the dice. This game, ironically like several of my other games, was an anomaly in that the results were skewered by the dice. That seems to be characteristic of a lot of the battles I've been having - the dice have been of extreme temperament. In this case, I was hot and SabrX was not. I made a majority of my cover saves for my rhinos. I passed all my psychic tests except one, but even the one I failed while attempting to cast Cleansing Flame, I was still able to wipe out his 2 units just with normal assault. I was rolling well on the damage charts as I exploded both piranhas with my purifiers. My purifiers survived a ton of kroot rapid-fire where I thought they wouldn't. Lastly, Crowe absorbed so many attacks yet still lived.
On the other hand, SabrX had 2 left feet and seemed to be stepping on his own toes everytime he JSJ'd (that's jump-shoot-jump, of which he failed 5). Both of his outflanking kroots failed to come in from the table-edge that he had wanted. Except for 1 explosion, the few time he did manage to get through my rhino's cover, the highest he would roll was a 3 on the damage charts. If not for the AP1 of the railguns, probably all my rhinos might have made it to his deployment zone.
But it wasn't just all luck. SabrX made a few tactical mistakes that I took advantage of:
1) The placement of the objectives. SabrX placed the 3rd objective far, far away from the other 2. He was thinking that his outflanking kroots could come in via outflanking and capture it. What it ended up being was an undefended objective for me to easily capture. Honestly, I wasn't afraid of his kroots, at least not with my purifiers. As a matter of fact, I was hoping some of his kroots would come in from there so that my 2 purifier units could see some action. With DoW deployment, I knew I could reach it by deploying one of my units as far forwards as possible.
2) Positioning of his broadsides. When his broadsides came in behind the ruins and to the right of it, I knew I could exploit their limited LOS. SabrX thought he could see through the terrain, but it turned out he couldn't. The terrain was just too high. Thus, his broadsides had a limited field of vision and could only see a small part of my army. And without Advanced Stabilization Systems (A.S.S.), he didn't have the flexibility to correct his positioning, at least not without sacrificing his firepower (by moving and not shooting). Thus, I would estimate that he only had 75% broadside efficiency...that is, he was only able to fire his broadsides 75% of the time. What's more, not all his broadsides were able to see the targets that counted - my advancing rhinos. Some of them were only able to see my dreads and the units at my deployment zone.
Instead, he should have just marched his broadsides out in the open but with better LOS. I had no guns where he needed cover from anyways.
3) He deployed nothing. If he had deployed at least 1 unit along the 24" line, it would have force me back into my deployment zone and I would've had to trek all the way to his gunline. Instead, I deployed my purifiers and Crowe at the 24" line and made it to his lines with arguably my most dangerous unit on Turn 2....Crowe. I knew Crowe's rhino had an excellent chance to make it to his deployment zone thanks to night-fight and the fact that his broadsides won't be able to fire on the turn they came in. Also, by not deploying his forces, that allowed me to deploy and push his kroots out of where he wanted to infiltrate them - the forests.
This is a new Tau build for SabrX. He said it was only his 2nd game with them. While the dice did skewer the results somewhat, I hope he was able to get enough information from it to make some adjustments to his army. It's a really good list already IMO. However, I do recommend A.S.S. for his broadsides and to somehow try to fit in 1 unit of pathfinders. People often under-estimate the importance of mobility. That's why I think my dreads are superior to heavy weapon units like devastators and long fangs at punching armor. Besides better accuracy, my dreads are dynamic while heavy weapon units are static. That means I can move and shoot while they can't. It makes all the difference in the world as I can reposition my dreads to take advantage of cover and move to fire at prey that try to escape my LOS. I can also move to get side shots at vehicles such as battlewagons that are fast approaching. As for the pathfinders, well, I think all my cover saves give testimony for the inclusion of them into every good army just like tervigons are vital to every good tyranid army. While they themselves are not an offensive unit, they do make the army much more dangerous on the whole.
MVP's:
Grey Knights:
Crowe: This guy was a beast in this game. He usually is against swarms. He went through a unit of kroots, the Tau HQ, 1 unit of suits and had a good chance to take out the last broadsides had the game continued. For anyone who thinks Crowe sucks, point them to this game. And no, this game isn't an anomaly for him. He consistently has games like these if you know how to use him properly.
Tau:
Crisis Suits: I'll give it to them because they probably did the most damage...and because they sucked the least in this game. But hey, what can you do when your opponent is making his saves?

Well when they have ASS then all have to have it, but you im pretty certain your correct in that his team leader has the Blacksun Filter. But looking over my codex as far as I can tell there is not any mention of the Battlesuit support systems having to be uniform on Broadsides. Only the ASS is listed as having to be equip to all

More to DarkCloud92's point - units movement affect every model in the unit. It wouldn't be any good to not equip ASS to a model and have it on another - the entire unit would move on 2d6, but the models not equipped would not be allowed to shoot even if they had themselves remained stationary.

Indeed. There's nothing illegal for each Broadside to take individual support systems. However, there's an explicit rule written in the codex that states if one member takes Advance Stabilization System, then everyone else in the squad has to take it. One member can also be upgraded to Team Leader and have access to Wargear, bypassing the 1 battlesuit support system restriction.
Hence why ASS is better off in 3 x 2 and no ASS is good for 3 x 3. 3 Broadsides with 2 Target Locks and 1 Blacksun filter is the cheapest configuration. A shame we can't use the 0 points drone controller. FAQ has made it mandatory for drone controllers to be bought with drones.

Definitely, it could have been anyone's game had the dice been more average. Though in all honesty, I think I had the advantage due to several mistakes SabrX made (see my Post-game Analysis), though I expect over time he won't be making too many of these mistakes.

I agree for the most part. I was kind of setting him up when I deployed the purifiers and Crowe, hoping he would castle to 1 side. By doing so, I knew I could more easily get to the other objective. I also knew that he would like the large, tall terrain so that he could JSJ his suits. I also felt that I could take advantage of LOS issues (well, it went both ways as I also had LOS issues to his units as well) that the large terrain presented, at least for his broadsides. Even if he were to destroy all my advancing units, I would still have 2 objectives - my own and the far-right one - that he would still have to somehow try to contest.
However, with regards to the kroots, SabrX played it right. When he rolled a 5 for their run roll, backing up was the right thing to do. This was because his kroots may have very likely gotten away from Crowe's assault range. It was close, but I made it into assault by about half an inch only. I sure was worried though. If Crowe couldn't make it, then he was as good as dead. If they had moved forward and I had wiped them out, my consolidation and movement next turn would probably still have allowed me to make an assault. But by moving his kroots backwards, I run the risk of not making the assault and then getting shot to death.
As for surrounding my rhino, his kroots wouldn't have made it.

Once Crowe made it to Tau lines on Turn 2, I felt good. I knew that if I played it right, Crowe would do a lot of damage and survive. I'm gaining more and more experience with my purifier knights. With experience comes knowledge. I've learned that I don't want to kill my opponent on my assault phase. Then I'd just get shot to death on his turn. I want to kill him on his assault phase.
While dreadnoughts are more useful against mech, their accuracy and high strength makes them useful against a broad range of opponents. This is my all-comer's purifier list so I usually have at least 4 dreads, no matter what army I'm going against. I either go 4 dreads plus the vindicare or I drop the vindicare and go 5 dreads. Last time against Tau, I brought 4 dreads + vindicare. This time, I tried something a little different. It's a very competitive GK build which I wouldn't normally bring against casual opponents. But against my friends, who are all good players with very balanced lists, it's ok.
But don't under-estimate the dreads. Not only are they good in wrecking the current competitive meta...which is MSU-mech...but they're great at insta-killing those 2-wound units like suits, broadsides, nobs, paladins, tyranid warriors, raveners, zoanthropes and other multi-wound units as well as denying FNP on BA, DE and some tyranid units. They also act as a counter-assault deterrent. Bring your uber-deathstar unit near me and I will lock them up in cc with my dreads.
Artemo wrote:Another great report and a game with the most cunning use of Crowe I think I've yet seen. In fairness, I think both mission and deployment suited the Grey Knights but the Tau, possibly as a consequence, never really seemed to get a cohesive attack going.
Yup, I agree. Mission and deployment did actually give me an advantage, though if my opponent had deployed 1 of his troops units forward, he could've taken away my deployment advantage.
While Crowe has his disadvantages, overall he is a pretty good character. He is more than just a "tax" for you to get scoring purifiers. If used properly, he will be an asset to your GK army. But it does take some experience to know how to use him properly.

OK you have dealt with the main issue that I was going to bring up. I was going to say that it looked like the Kroot could have run away from Crowe's transport turn 1 and tried to leave him out of assault range, knowing that if the rhino moves he couldn't assault.
I was also going to suggest positioning the Broadsides away from the the rest of the Tau force. That way if you send a unit after them you are pulling yourself away from the Tau objective and giving them more breathing room. A friend of mine does it with Leman Russ Battle Tanks and it's a real pain when you can't down them with ranged firepower.
Another thing that I would have done differently if I were the Tau player is trying to find a spot for a small unit of pathfinders. I know it screws with the list but from this game you can really tell that smoke saves made the game easy for you. Being able to remove them would have been a potential lifesaver. Not saying you should do it...just the way I would have done it.

"Drone delivery" never works for me, for aforementioned reasons. If it's not a KP mission, I always take them out before shots are fired. They can move 12" per turn (plus d6" if you don't shoot), they can make it to objectives without the 'mothership' anyway. And if enemy shoots at them, well, then he didn't shoot my Suits, Vehicles etc. Or I just use them as sacrifical blocking unit.

I may have missed it in all the comments, your Battle Reports get a ton of feedback Jy2. I know there was a discussion on this in YMDC, but it looks like you used the standard Wound Allocation process for the Dangerous Terrain tests. I have always been under the impression Dangerous Terrain wounds were rolled and assigned on a per model basis.
Any thoughts?

P.14 of the rules begins by implying it's per model ('on a roll of 1, the model suffers a wound') but then makes it rather more ambiguous by referring to 'wounds and saves are explained in the next section.')
But as assaults through dangerous terrain are done on an individual model basis (because it can affect whether the assault happens or not), I think that means they should always be on an individual model basis.

ouch, reminded me a lot of my own games:
Broadsides take a hit, fails morale aaand of the board we go, that and dangerous terrain are tau's nemeses.
On the other foot, I've had broadisdes with plasmas and MT's do wonders for any late game close threats.
Nice rep jy2, and some sound tactical decicions combined with excellent dice makes for victories

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, my opponent placed the 2 objectives on opposite ends so that even if he were to split up his broadsides, it would be ok for me to go after them as I would also be going after the objectives.
Pathfinders definitely would have made a difference here. While he would have to give up some offense to fit them in, I think it would be worth it. But he will probably give this list a few more test runs before making changes to it.

That's a pretty nifty tactic in objectives games. I like it.
calypso2ts wrote:I may have missed it in all the comments, your Battle Reports get a ton of feedback Jy2. I know there was a discussion on this in YMDC, but it looks like you used the standard Wound Allocation process for the Dangerous Terrain tests. I have always been under the impression Dangerous Terrain wounds were rolled and assigned on a per model basis.
Any thoughts?
No, you didn't miss it as we haven't commented on it thus far. I agree that DT wounds should be on a per model basis and I think so does SabrX. That's why when he failed his DT (most of the time, the whole unit had to take DT tests as all of them jumped into terrain), he put the wounds on different models. I guess if he had used the standard wound allocation (a la shooting) and placed both wounds on the regular suit, he would have to remove 1 whole model instead.
I see this a lot and I think a lot of people do it like this - they roll for the DT first and then assign it to the models. To me, it isn't really a big deal and in casual games, I'd let it go. But if it could make a difference, like the example Artemo pointed out about models assaulting, then I would have him allocate first on the model and then take the DT test. The same goes for units with special weapons (i.e. powerfist sergeat, melta-gunners, etc.) if I felt it may make a difference in the game.
Artemo wrote:P.14 of the rules begins by implying it's per model ('on a roll of 1, the model suffers a wound') but then makes it rather more ambiguous by referring to 'wounds and saves are explained in the next section.')
But as assaults through dangerous terrain are done on an individual model basis (because it can affect whether the assault happens or not), I think that means they should always be on an individual model basis.
I agree that it is on a per model basis. I'm usually sort of relaxed though, so in order to save time, I usually let people roll all at once and then remove the models if I didn't think it would make a difference.

Yeah, careful use of tactics makes a huge difference whether Crowe does well or not.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I remember this 1 game I had against Tau at the 'Ard Boyz tournament last year. He had 2x3 broadsides. First turn, I kill 1 or 2 from each squad. He then fails morale on both and they run off the board. Positively demoralizing. I tried that same tactic in my last game against Tau (battle report link on the very 1st post of this batrep), but my opponent beat the odds and passed every single Morale test that counted. The result was a big loss for my purifier-knights.
I think this game, I surprised SabrX with a few of my tactics. As for the dice, well, I've given and taken my fair share of these types of victories.

It's like karma. What goes around, comes around.
Thanks again for letting me borrow your GK Termies.
I'll eventually covert 7 Crisis Suits into Broadsides using magnets. If it turns out well, I may even convert the rest of my Crisis Suits. It will make Apoc games a lot interesting having 18 Broadsides on the table.

Good idea. 18 broadsides....ouch!. That's going to hurt both my warhound titan and my bio-titan!

Yeah, jy2 made good use of Crowe. There's very in the Tau's arsenal that can ignores armor saves in assault. 2+ with re-rolls is beastly!

Thanks. Crowe is far from unbeatable. You just have to understand his strengths and weaknesses. But one thing I will say though, because he is not an IC, people often tend to look down on him and therefore, under-estimate him. They also tend to put him as a lower priority on the danger scale so oftentimes, he is able to survive to make it into combat as long as he is protected.

Actually, Tau is scary! My Crowe already ate 1 railgun to the face. Also, massed plasma from crisis suits will easily bring him down. That's why I have to be very careful with the timing of my assaults. While he is a beast in assault, he is actually very fragile to shooting.

I admit that luck did have a part to play in this game. However, I did take advantage of a couple of mistakes my opponent made as well as surprised him with my tactical use of Crowe. Even without the luck, I don't think he would have been able to reach the far objective to capture/contest.

Indeed. This was the first game I played against Crowe. It took a lot of shooting to disable his Rhino. jy2 was smart to disembark him in the back out of TLOS. Since then, I've made Crowe a high priority target whenever I play against him. In one game I even deep striked a Terminator squad just so I could rear shot Crowe's Rhino with CML.
