Well done to all those who have grades and such, I remember it was a stressful time for me so get out their and celebrate with drinks, if you are old enough ofcourse.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

As for A-levels, just do what I did: Join a band, get kicked out of college for drug-abuse, vandalism, and persistent absenteeism, travel around the country playing gigs (and associated mayhem), generally just drift for a few years until you finally decide what you're interested in, in your mid-twenties. By that time, you'll be old enough to qualify as a mature student, and you won't need A-levels, you just have to do a year's access course. Piece of piss. You get more out of education when you're older anyway, plus, with 'The Albatross Method', you get to actually live for a few years before becoming a soulless consumer drone with a sensible job and a mortgage.

You should study abroad. Go to Wales.

Or the states. We have a couple of schools here, I think.

I guess the easy way would be to see if your university has a "Study abroad" program where you spend a semester (typically summer) in another country.

I really wish I had taken advantage of Louisiana Tech's Rome program.

Anyway, there are plenty of College/University reviews and rankings for US schools online. I also wouldn't know where to start.

USNews does a ranking each year of the Universities: here

Oh yeah the course I am applying to at sheffield has a year study in north america but I mean purely studying in the states

Problem with that is it tends to be bloody expensive.

Very true. I didn't, that's why I had to resit A Levels to get decent grades. I had got A,A,A,A,B,B,C at O Levels so I felt fairly comfortable.

It's another step up at university as well.

Best of luck to everyone getting their results (I presume everyone has already by this time).

Remember getting my A-level results (all those many moons ago, though not as many as some in this thread ) and it was a great feeling I had done well enough to go and do what I wanted to do.

Just got to keep working as hard as you can now

Edit: As KK says - you really need to keep up as university is a whole new level - don't think you can relax once you are in there. And seriously - work hard. Nothing worse than spending 3-4 years (or indeed however long your course is) at university/elsewhere and a whole bundle of cash if you get a bad result at the end of it and can't use what you have.

Why anyone would come to Wales to study I do not know. I think I know of an American who games in Cardiff because he studies here. If that's true I will demand his head be examined.

Uh, yeah, it's true... I got kicked out in my final year when I was 16 for smoking pot in the canteen, putting dead birds in vending machines, gluing coins to the floor so they would confuse the Down's Syndrome day-release kids, and not ever really turning up to classes. I was a little bastard, truth be told. I'm much nicer now.

God this thread makes me feel old. The 10 years since my A levels have flown by. And what did I do with my Chemistry, Physics and Biology A levels (followed by a degree in Physics)? Go to China and teach kids English.

Anyways, good luck to all. I hope you all make it to your first choices, but if you don't it's not the end of the world.

Well, it sounds like you're a completely different person in the past considering you now talk about British people needing a stiff upper lip, a sense of classiness or some other polite English man stereotype.

Statistics. Americans out-test the English early, but by grade 8 it tilts towards you guys; and the Commonwealth in general. Your system is better at developing specific knowledge.

Hmm, how are these statistics acquired? Because, after all, the grading systems are different in the various countries, so that wouldn't be a reliable method. Is there some kind of unified measure that they used?

The PISA test is the most commonly cited.

American education isn't bad, don't get me wrong. It simply isn't as good as the education in Commonwealth states, and there are various reasons behind the discrepancy ranging from trivial (the metric system makes kids better at math due to base 10 commonality) to the complex (America is anti-intellectual).

Ah, right-oh. That seems like a fairly good indicator then. Still, the British education system is a long way from perfect.

I completely bombed ended up getting D-U-D-U, partially due to my attendance being 28% due to crippling insomnia and anxiety.
Not completely unexpected although now more or less being relatively sane after counciling and drug therapy im debating about going back and trying again I was predicted AABB I just wasnt in long enough to cover all the subject material haha.

Go for it, if you have the potential there is no shame in doing college in three or even four years.

Technically this is my 3rd attempt i started at 16 but my medical condition wasn't diagnosed and i got kicked out due to poor attendance, then this year just passed I was diagnosed and whilst I managed to hold out till the end it still proved to be my undoing. My concern now is that regardless of my grades universities will look down on me / deny me a place on the grounds that i wasted two years with nothing to show for it as i doubt they'll take into consideration my medical history.

They actually might in a good way. Overcoming medical issues to succeed with grades can be a good thing to some University applicant processors.

Good luck with your next try, just don't get Doodoo again.

I think I had a D and a E in my A levels. Yup, I only did two.
