Yeah I'll break the setting too. Wood elves aren't that great. The necrons of fantasy. On the other hand, they have some great fluff. Seriously, just imagine the people that live in the woods that are always pissed off at you, and kill you the second you set foot in their glades. Better than WoC says I.

Buzz Killingtons all of you pointing out the obvious. I saw this thread and rolled my eyes, hoping it would just be ignored with no replies, and then Ahtman totally knocked it out of the park. This is fantasy, not 40k, we don't appreciate these threads down here on this end of Dakka. We play fantasy cause we enjoy the game, we like our armies and play to play, not play to win. We come to Dakka to mingle and talk strategy, talk what might be broken and what might be cheese but please leave this question on the forums above us.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I agree in that I play armies that I enjoy and not what's the strongest at the moment... but I severely disagree in the statement that we aren't here to win. Personally, every game I play my goal is to win. If I lose, I think carefully on what I did wrong so I can win next time I play. I also appreciate when my opponent has the drive to beat me and win as well... and I really hate playing players who bring bad lists or complain about being competitive.
Now of course that's just me, and to each their own. But don't speak for the rest of us when it comes to how we like to play the game.

Well I think everyone does that. I'm just saying it's not like balls to the wall, like 40k win or die. Either way we're a bunch of guys that are way too old to be playing with toy soldiers.

You are never too old for toy soldiers.
Personally ulike building a hard army since who likes playig against a wen noodle?
The only thing I ask out o a game is that both players have fun.
And a close battle in my opinion is great fun.

The thing I really dislike about threads like these is that it gives off the intention of playing said army after a general consensus is reached. Sure, we all play to have fun, and to win of course, but when someone just blatantly asks for the most powerful army in game it shows a sort of lack of thought to some degree. I'm slightly with Hargus, you're there to have fun, but you're also there to win. Just work for the win, don't just show up, copy the power-builds, and go home.

Seeing how 40k is it dosnt seem like a bad question since some armies are obviously more powerful so it may not have been intended in the way we understood it.
Point being any army can be powerful if the dice are with you.

To be quite honest, I'd ignore them. Every time I decide to check out a new army it get's updated soon after I spend money on it.
Played DoW and liked IG. Well I think I'll pick up an IG army. Codex updates 3 months later.
Decided to go with Grey Knights, I like the look of their glaives and elite troop approach. Codex drops like 4 months later.
Diverge into fantasy couple months back, friend goes VC I go Ogre, and guess what's about to get a new codex.
It's madness I tell you.

May as well go necrons haha.
I started BA after they came out. (I was in my small town with 2 other gamers at the time).
I loved the models and got just a bunch of sanguinary guard and fun stuff just because there was nothing exciting about building necron warriors and destroyers.
But you could always get a Woc army actually nvm I dont wnat to learn a new book yet

Really?

I have been playing them for a while now, and I can't seem to find a really competetive list. What sort of build makes them competetive?
What zeekill meant was: Teclis in an army with Banner of Sorcery is competitive. For the rest, High Elves have terrible shooting, no Monsters and mediocre Core units. Their Special infantry is powerful, but not so much that they single handedly make High Elves competitive. Teclis just dominates the Magic Phase and will allow you to cast the spell you need without the opponent being able to do anything about it.

BS 4 does not make up for the fact that bows are only S3 and bolt throwers and costed at about double what they need to be to be worth fielding.
And fyi WEs aint that great at shooting a dwarf or empire gunline will eat them up.
Blackpowder is what rules shooting phases in warhammer a hippy with a curved stick with a bit of string fails when compared to the might of a big fething cannon.

What ever happened to fateweaver...
Fateweaver got less popular in 8th edition for a couple of reasons:
-Fateweaver cannot be fielded in games of under 2532. Since 2400 and 2500 are popular game sizes, this means you see a lot less of Fateweaver except for 'Ard Boyz tournaments.
-The Magic Lores in the Rulebook are now actually filled with useful spells, instead of having only one or two useful spells. This means that Heralds of Tzeentch with the Loremaster ability have gotten a lot better, while Fateweaver already had the ability to take only the good spells. This (to some extent) nullifies the advantage Fateweaver had in spell selection.
-Being unable to join units in a game where Cannons have become so accurate hurts Fateweaver, although the 3+ Ward save does help.

No not that new, but:
1. I dread ever seeing a bolt thrower, they would decimate my knights, rank piercing and the lance formation, there goes a third of my unit
2. I play against High Elves a lot, and I hate the shooting phase, his highly accurate shooting takes out chunks from my wizard bunker
3. I admit that cannons are really good, but black powder really doesn't scare my knights with a 2+ AS and a 6/5+ Ward Save

A cannon shot should be playing havok with knights in a lance formation other then wards it should negate your normal armour save please go reread the rules for cannons because your doing it wrong if a bolt thrower is causing more wounds.
As for bow shooting your knights should be almost immune to it and if your men at arms units are getting hurt by bowfire I can only assume you are running far to small of a unit. 40 models is a min for a combat unit these days and with crappy troops like men at arms I would field them in blocks of 60 plus.
I think you lack experince after you have faced a few gunlines a dare you to say HEs have good shooting with a straight face.

This thread made me LOL. Seriously though, I was in a small game, tfg's wood elfs, 100 points of them, against an alliance of 1000 of dwarfs, 1000 WOC and 5000 Skaven. Unfortunately, tfg only had one unit, due to his points level. In the first turn he decimated the skaven, and continued to wrap up the game in three turns. Did I mention he was a slowed blind, deaf, dumb adn brainless carrot? Yeah, WE CHEEEEESE!

This thread has brightened up a fairly dull day! The majority of armies in WHFB are able to compete thankfuly, just certain builds are seen as cheesey/ WAAC/powergaming. And yeah the whole elves with bows are to be feared is more than a bit overshadowed by the blackpowder weapons armour cutting power and higher strength. Now if they added some special rule where elves got advatages for using bows (highly accurate so +1 str and -1 save for being able to pick out eye slots in helmets) now then I'd worry. I'd also perhaps think HE archers were worth it
