I know what it doesn't taste like and drew some conclusions.

The one time I had it, which was years ago in high school, I didn't care for it. I want to say it was too salty. I wouldn't be against trying it again, as there are several foods I've come to enjoy since then, and tastes do change over time.

American cheese, on the other hand, is disgusting and will remain so in perpetuity. It's right up there with all the other pseudo-cheese, like Velveeta and Provel.

They sound like medicines or Female Hygiene Products.

I assume that they come ina spray can?

Too bad American cheese is the only cheap cheese here. I dislike it so i smother it in meat to give it a semblance of cheese.

I know a lot of Americans who dislike "American" cheese.

Personally I prefer Colby-Jack (IE a mixture of Colby and Monterey Jack cheeses), it's still an American cheese, but it's not "American Cheese"-- which is more of a cheese product than a true cheese.

In fact, only children seem to actually like "American Cheese", and they're children, what the hell do they know about good cheese?

Not even. I like spray cheese. It's SUPPOSED to be terrible.

They're overly processed cheese type product. Velveeta is basically a brick of American that is a little bit creamier. It also allegedly contains aluminum, which is, as they say, "not so good for you". It can't actually legally be called cheese here in the states anymore. Provel is a bastard amalgamation of Swiss, Provolone, and Mozzarella. Thankfully, it hasn't escaped far from the St. Louis area to pollute other sections of the country, but it's everywhere here. I think it has the consistency and flavor of slightly melted plastic. It's hard to find a pizza that isn't covered in it around here unfortunately.

My roommate loves it; puts it on everything. We're talking chili with American on it for feths sake. Of course, this is also the same guy who will put ketchup on fish, so I guess maybe there's just to accounting for taste.

Verily. T'was a shock. Quite nearly soiled my waistcoat with the previously mentioned chili as well. Were the manservant not so quick, it might have been quite the affair.

I had no idea what Vegemite was until I saw a picture of it on the sandwich thread...although I'm disinclined to eat anything that looks like it was extracted from the sewer, I'll give most things a try just once...

Never had it. Haven't even seen it in stores, to my knowledge. Not really interested in trying it, if it truely is a fish-paste.

I don't know... like anything else there are varying levels; there's some decent American cheese out there.

Still, there are countless varieties of cheese that I will choose over American.

What does Vegemite taste like compared to other food? I have no idea.

And I don't understand 'American cheese' being singularly American, I was raised on cheddar. I find American pretty revolting.

Veggimite is congealed plankton and phytoplankton. it tastes like a gulp of seawater and some dead fish, tar, salt, ,ore salt, and the bitterest thing ever.

I like Marmite, I put a small spoonful into my Chile when cooking.... Yummy!

I had Vegemite a few years back, and I can honestly say that it wasn't as bad as everyone said it was. True, I don't think I could pound a jar of it and not throw up, but I think it has potential to add interesting flavors to some food dishes. (when used in moderation, of course)

I really like Marmite, and I thought I'd found Vegemite foul.

However after doing some research thanks to this thread, I am doubting what I tried was Vegemite. I am sure it was the same yellow label in all, but it said it was a Vegetable extract on the label not yeast and was a pale tan colour.

No idea what it was now, but that was nasty.

Odds are going on the info I've just read, it'd taste very similar to Marmite.

I have Marmite?

I prefer Nutella over Vegemite and Marmite.
