Really, why do non-Australians HATE Vegemite?

Its gross?

I can tell you all think it's gross.

I hate it because I don't know what it is. Fear of the unknown

I don't hate it - I think it's lovely, but I prefer Marmite.

It tastes like tar and salt, and we have not acquired a taste for such things. Its the same reason, minus salted tar, non-Americans generally dislike American cheese.

Actually, I've never heard of a Non-Australian that loves Vegemite, only ones that don't dislike it

That is correct. It is an Aussie yeast exract.
Of course as it is a by-product of naff Aussie beer it is invariably an inferior product!

Chibi and filbert have it backwards.

Over here we dont need to hate Vegemite because we hate Marmite. I get a bad taste in my mouth just thinking about that stuff.

It can be an aquired taste. Same with Marmite some like and some don't
Since we have our own yeast extract as well as own brand supermarket versions Vegemite is just not as big a seller in GB

Like Filbert i like Vegemite, but i prefer Marmite, which is good as Marmite is more readily available here. I eat that stuff in quantities that make my fiance feel sick...

It's all good though cos she grosses me out with Peanut butter... Superfood or not, i can't bring myself to eat a mixture of nuts and fat (sounds appetising, no?) that looks and smells to me like it just came out the southern end of a child.

Peanut butter with added oil... I have to agree. The 'pure' stuff though (Which is ridiculously hard to find in the UK.) I must defend in that its lovely and tastes very much different. (Still looks horrid though.. )


On topic... I hate Marmite and Vegemite, with the Veg taking the award for 'Food that needs to be purged from the planet'. I have also noticed that we in the UK there is quite a proportion of those who do like Marmite who dislike Vegemite.

Indeed, Marmite should be banned. Vile stuff, feeding it to children is cruel and abusive. Opening the jar in the presence of normal people is offensive and inflammatory. Dare I think about what the poor slave workers in the Marmite factory have to go through with all the industrial pollutants from the process; or those poor unfortunates who live nearby to be forced to live in the contaminated zone. Ban Marmite now, better and kinder than letting it linger on. The only people who eat the stuff anyway are addicts and those with abnormally developed taste buds.

I have abnormally developed taste buds... just gimme that jar of yeasty joy and a spoon and i'll be a happy bunny!

Sir, I do believe that you have it the wrong way round, for you see, those who do not like marmite are those with the abnormally developed taste buds, we normal people simply have a taste for rather delicious savoury spread.
