I realy like your tutorial it neatly explains the basics of layering the paint. I do not like the cucumber Orks though Do you have any suggestions for more gritty (maybe olive-like) Ork colours?

Brilliant tutorial, especially for someone like me who has to hand paint everything! I've been painting for over a year and a half mostly using gw tutorials and lots of drybrushing and nothing I've done compares to this. Question though, what's the real difference between washing after the base coat and washing after you've done all the highlight layers? Either way this has inspired me to paint my Orks, which I wasn't going to do.

Hey, thanks so much for your kind comments.
I believe the real difference would be that if you applied the wash only after the basecoat, it would give you the benefits of darkening the recesses, however it would not provide the "blending" effect of making the different colours of skin less noticeable.
If you add the wash after the different colours of skin highlights, the devlan mud wash appears to soften the differnet colours blending from one to another. That is why many people in the painting game call GW washes "Liquid Talent!" They really do provide a high level of forgiveness!
I hope that answers your question.

I very much enjoyed your tutorial! As a new player, I am definitely going to be using your method on my orks!
Earlier in this thread it was mentioned that you should thin down your paints, what do you use to thin them? I'm thinking water? If it is indeed water, how much do you add to the paint? Thanks!

Thanks so much. I do indeed thin my paints with water. I use distilled water as it doesn't add any unwanted minerals and such. I really don't know if that is imperitive, I just am lucky to have distilled water at my house.
As for how much? Dip a toothpick into your paint it should drip off the toothpick just as lets say 1% or 2% milk would. Remember to always STIR the bottom of the pots too, as the pigments stick in the bottom!

Thanks for the info. I may try and do a wash after the base coat and again after I've highlighted everything and see how that works.

I wouldn't say you get "bored" with painting Orks, but it does take tenacity to get through them all. It certainly is a daunting task to paint this many!!

I wanted to thank you cattafish. I have been trying forever to understand what you demonstrated on your video. A friend of mine is a really good painter who talks the same way as you but never found the time to explain it right or just simply show me what he meant.
I used the idea on my Snikrot model, he is complete by i am by no means a pro painter. I did do one thing differently than you and I would like to talk a bit about it. Rather than use Devlan Mud (which i did actually have) it felt wrong to use that wash over Thraka Green for the skin, the rest was hit with other colored washes as well. What is the main difference between my approach and yours?
I will try and post a pic of Snikrot he turned out very well but i need to polish this new skill a bit more

Hello again Cattafish, So i find myself reviewing your video more often than i work like as i can tell the video is helping me but i seem to be missing out on some basic things I think you could help me organize or sort out for me. Please understand this isn't to critque you it just asking to learn and see the methods to your style.
When i paint a model I find myself feeling like I am making a mistake when i finish with the washing step, it feels like i need to do some basic highlights and the like over it i dunno it's like the wash pulls out alot of the color i did like on the model wither I am using color for color washes (like thraka green for skin and Bael red for red armor) is this considered normal to go to the washing step and call it a day or is there more i am not seeing perhaps?
Also you mentioned thinning your paints, I occasionally am finding that my highlights are coming in too thick despite trying my really hard to thin it on my pallet before use. What methods can you suggest with this? I'll try and take some pictures but this camera i have SUUUUUUCKS. If i find some would you be willing to help me out a bit perhaps? I'd really like to refine my skill ... even though i am the best painter my community of gamers.

Hey Dude,
The only models I finish by washing the entire model is the orks. I find washing them with Devlan mud gives them that grungy feel while also blending the skin and other highlights that I did. Right before the wash, the figs almost look cartoony, but after the wash, I feel they look life like
I would suggest try and find someone with a good macro setting, and take a few pictures so I can see your results, and if I have any comments that may help you improve.
Cheers!

Hey,
I guess when I started playing the army, I was more painting than building a proper list. Then I kept playing space marines, and found the Orks have strong limitations in beating ST14 armour. Researching tactics, I liked the idea of 3 Battlewagons with Deffrollas (2 with 19 boyz and a PK Nob + 1 with a Big Mek KFF and 7 burnas)
So really the BW took up the heavy slot, and I never liked the Str 11 armour on the KK or Dreads.
Those are just my opinions on how I play the Orks, I know lots of guys like the Dreads and Kans.

Just seen this. Great video dude.
This is almost exactly the same way I paint my orks, except I don't have a snot green so I mix goblin green with a little skull white.
Definately gonna steal your teeth painting technique though, never quite been able to get that right myself.
