Not impressed...
So. I'm geuiniely curious.
1) How much have you spent on GW this year?
2) Do you play Warhammer?
3) Have you "quit" Warhammer?
It will be off topic, but i could not let you curious...
1) Well, before the god damned price rise, fallowed by the embargo, them by finecost, them by secrecy politic, I have spent 150 dollars into GW products, and was planning to spend another 150 until the end of the year... before all the " GW hate their costumer and are trying to prove it" episode.
2) I dont like WHFB rules (overcomplicated), but i play 40k regularly (less tham i want it, i assume), and i really like both scenarios (well, at least the old version of them, before GW scrudge up the fluff and wiped the Grim Dark element)
3) No, i never "quit" warhammer, i still like the game and the fluff. What i quit was GW, the company who produce it, i still buy some products from them, like they good plastic kits. But that hardly reach 5 dollars a month now...
I hope i had helped you...

Five wolves for $25 USD does not work, unless the 5-box is selling significantly cheaper (I don't mean $22.50 instead of $25). Five Goblins on Wolves (or, basically, 5 Men at Arms on 5 slightly faster horses) does not equate to 5 Cold One Riders / Chaos Knights / Boar Boyz.
If it sells for significantly cheaper, box of 5 works. If not... I just don't see them worth $100 for 20 Wolves. $30-40 more than it is now, in other words.

EDIT: oops wait so is this just wolves by themselves with no riders? So when they do the goblin riders, will they also be in plastic? Do GW do plastic bitz-addon kits (unless the riders don't count as a 'bitz' kit)

Have a look where this rumour comes from:
1.) FW is doing Hobgoblins.
2.) Hobgoblins have wolf riders.
3.) FW says they won't do wolf sculpts themselves as GW will make new ones.
So while the rumour is just about wolves, a new Goblin wolf rider kit seems likely.

I haven't bought a GW cavalry kit in several years, do the new kits still keep the mounts on entirely separate sprues?

Rarely, they put it where it fits on the sprues. Worked with Mournfang, but not completely with boar riders.

The thing I'm worried about with this isn't the wolves looking Cartoonish like the Boars (They are cool IMO), but rather having the common cavalry issue I've noticed of late, being very hard to align on their bases, I bought a set of Boars a few weeks back and they were nigh on impossible to fit side by side properly (I never fully managed it)

Well, Hastings seems to put an end to this rumour, as he is usually very well informed:

Sad for Goblins, good for Space Wolves.

Plastic Thunderwolves? Sure it'll portably be cheaper than other company resin models but if its based on the Canis model then it'll look silly

Ask the GW store you'll be playing at, but generally it doesn't seem like anyone cares anymore.

I would really like some nice, naked wolves for my warhounds. I was thinking of using some really old Ral Partha wolves I had around, but given they are closer to 25mm wolves than some, they seemed a little small. Not that I want wolves the size of a rhino mind you, but GW could actually manage to fill a need of mine here if they do a good job.
I know! I am as surprised as you are!
