Independent retailers are fairly common over here. Like anything else, though, quality varies tremendously between establishments- some are absolutely top notch businesses that cater to numerous wargames and RPGs; others are cramped, overpriced armpits with terrible customer service.

You should go to one at least. Then you realize how good local shops are.

The one in the West Edmonton Mall (1st or 2nd biggest mall in the world) a few years ago before I even really knew what 40k was.

That's about 5000km away from me currently, and the nearest GW store is several hundred miles away and across an ocean.

The closest one to me happens to be ~9 miles from me, the smallest one in the US and the only real gaming place nearby. It's in Stoneridge mall California.

five or six when GW had their own stores in New England, USA.

20 or 25 when including random gaming stores. I had a travelling job back in the day which made it possible & still travel quite a bit for fun. Always interesting to see painted armies in store displays & gaming tables.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

LOL, don't feel too bad. About two hours into my honeymoon, across half the country, I managed to accidentally find GW while looking for a place to grab some lunch.

If I am remembering correctly, 12, in various parts of the country, including their main one in Maryland.

I can't recall how it was years ago too well, but the current ones seem to be one man shops. Which is kind of crappy, what happens if the guy who works there gets sick or has to leave?

Only a few.
I normally just go to my local one in Brierley Hill (the Dudley shop, even though it's not in Dudley) and do remember when it first opened in it's previous location 22 years ago now I believe.

I've also been to the one in Birmingham in it's three different locations.

I did try to go into the shops in Sutton Coldfield and Stratford-Upon-Avon in the last week but they were both closed when I got there, a weekday too :(

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.
