Not that you can tell from that heavy coat of hers. She could go on a shopping trip with eDenny to let 'em breathe.

Not when the model was released, so I don't really agree with that statement. Also, I think that chart really highlights how ridiculous some of those ages are. Particularly, one of note is Severius, at 85, has about the same stats as a rank and file soldier: not fantastic, mind you, but I'd like to see an 85YO duke it out with a trained soldier of 25.

...actually, I take that back, it would be sort of pathetic and brutal, I imagine.

EDIT: looking at that chart is really quite amusing...

Caine in his octopus-arm drawing is supposed to be 33?
Madrak leads a hunting party at the ripe old age of 17?
Sorscha is older than Stryker, who is older than Darius?
Haley is a pretty old prodigy.

Edit 2:

I think that makes Vinter's kid something like 14

You DO realize that the IK universe is originally based on D&D rules, right? Meaning age isn't really anything but a number to a warcaster's abilities, especially considering the level/CRA of many of them(high 20's/low 30's). You can't really compare them to our society's notion of age and ability.

I play the RPG, and think that the way age works in D&D (at least 3.5) is equally absurd.

Yes, I can compare their ages, because I believe that PP has set up a narrative and temporal world that for the most part acts like ours (momentum exists, people form civilizations, there are four seasons in sequence, etc. etc.), and as such, without explanations counter to it, I don't feel that I need to suspend my disbelief when faced with a lack of explanations.

For example (technology):
Magic exists in the IKs. It effects alchemy. Alchemy effects technology. Technology is different than ours in the IKs. I'll buy that.

Highly efficient steam engine exists in the IKs (evidenced by warjacks*). Steam powered vehicles exist in the IKs (evidenced by trains). For some reason, they decide that the best mode of moving a tank is giant horses. I won't buy that.

*I'd argue that they're extremely inefficient or extremely broken, with clouds of flame and smoke coming off of them, while an efficient steam engine will lose little heat (no flames spouting) and burn efficiently (little smoke), but for a boiler as small as theirs to work, the assumption is they'd be efficient. But, this is a product of artistic license (if you can call it that).

Example 2 (practicality):
Merc warjacks pull double-duty as tools of labor, or are converted from a labor setting. They have hands for holding weapons, and can (mostly) let go of them. I'll buy that.

Traditional military grade warjacks more often than not hold weapons in their hands, regardless of any labor application**, even though hands would be incredibly difficult to maintain and easy targets for disabling their weapons. I don't buy that.

**the protectorate could be an exception here, except they've decided that the "scrappy underdog/hidden army" thing doesn't really apply any more, so I wouldn't argue this. Khador's lack of cortexes might also make an exception.

Example 3 (science):
Magic allows warcaster armor to be lighter than normal. Warcasters can wear an absurd amount of armor with a decent amount of mobility. I'll buy this.

For some reason, caves in the IK get to the point of below freezing. There's no explanation for why their caves would act differently than ours. Again, I don't buy this.

edits: examples.

He's also wearing a suit of steam-driven power armor. Without it, his stats would probably be roughly on par with Rhineholdt.

If you're referring to the cave that was storing the Athanc Cryx found, you do realise it was in a Cyriss-tech refrigeration unit, right?

Nope, when Thagrosh, Vayl, and one of the twins are going through some caves and end up in Rhul, they mention that the snowy mountains are warm in comparison with the freezing caves/tunnels they were in.

And, re: severius (the 85YO, though Nemo isn't much younger), yes, there's armor, but no, there's no indication that WC armor increases anything other than your strength and durability (i.e. I'm pretty sure it dosen't effect your reflexes, ability to lead, ability to see, etc.). I'm fine with the Circle having ancient guys duke it out b/c of extra vitality and so forth, but I'd argue that an 85 year old guy in a suit of magical plate mail is probably still not even an average combatant. Again, not basing on the D&D age system, which I think is ridiculous.

He's an 85 year old man who's the leader of a religion whose god actively intervenes in the mortal world. Why do you think Voyle was so awesome?

Voyle is based on the monk archetype and, as such, supernatural in the setting: they're all about perfection and superhuman acts (like higher level druids, this is explained as part of what they are). I also actually have no idea whatsoever how old voyle was.

However, I only sort of buy the ridiculousness of Voyle and Vinter (both being superhuman: Voyle with magic and probably a fair amount of skill, Vinter with raw talent and some magic gear, from what I can tell).

Whatever. PP sometimes explains things and often doesn't, and I was much more able to swallow the stupid stuff before I started being frustrated with the writing, through a combination of my standards increasing and my feeling that theirs are decreasing. This argument is somewhat circular.

Back on topic (because I could rant/flame/argue about my disappointment with PP's writing/creative integrity indefinitely), regardless of some of how poor some of the writing has been, Magnus is my favorite character in the IK setting, and I'm glad that PP took him from a throwaway joke character to a real player in the world. Also, it doesn't hurt that he's pretty fun to play.

I'd ask for that ridiculous fake Middle/Early Modern English he used for the first few books. At least they gave him a specific voice back then, even if it was silly.

Then the Harbinger, and Vilmon. Though I think most of the characters from Menoth are pretty cool in their own right. Except the HR.

The High Reclaimer is one of my other favorite characters. I mean, he walked into the afterlife and back out. And the Harbinger talks to him through Menoth, also pretty cool.

The whole no talking thing puts me on edge. I don't trust people that are always silent, like thieves, in the night. If I can't trust it, how can it win me games!

I wasn't being serious, when I said that by the way. I actually like most of the background for the Menoth Warcasters, and how Menoth in each way affected them, or how they interpret his will to affect the world around them. It's that kind of interesting backstory that made me pick them up after getting rid of my mercs.

I've never understood this. I'm seriously curious, how does one interpret the Will of God, when God makes his Will known on a regular basis, through saying things through beings directly linked to him, and variously manifesting miracles or allowing them to be manifested.

It's like Voyle and the harbinger:
"Hey, uh, Voyle? God says that's a bad idea."
"Umm, nope. I interpret 'that's a bad idea,' as 'that's a bad idea to stop'."
*fighting continues*
"God says that's a bad idea, still."
"Nope, I'm having fun punting warjacks, chill."
*Stryker shoves the Harbinger's sword through Voyle*
"Blerg, how could I have ever seen this coming? I am dead." X ~ X

I'd love to hear the other side, I just can't figure it out.

Well on topic I enjoyed Rezniks story in wrath, it gave him a bit more depth. And Doomshapers willingness to do whatever it takes made him a favorite of mine. Over all I really like the idea of Rosch, highwayman with very loose morals.
