Which character's backstory really does it for you? Purely from a fluff perspective.

I really like Goreshade; for a start, he's the only cryx character I can remotely believe is doing what he/she feels is right, and he has a ruthless streak about a mile wide, willing to kill anyone and anything, including his own Gods and children to save the immortal souls of his entire species, admirable, in a Hitler/Stalin kind of way. He also has balls, balls enough to try (and apparently succeed) and play Toruk, one of the most powerful entities in all of Caen.

The story when he faces off against Ossyan, is just great, the oozing self confidence and self righteousness are palpable!

Goreshade has a really neat anti-hero thing going. He's also I think unique in the Cryx line-up in that he's generlaly been pretty competent and successful. Even when he has setbacks, it's things like, "Failed to kill a god", which is something impressive in the attempt if not so much the results. HIs plan being on the slgiht psychotic level is pretty neat too.

I find more and more myself liking that Krueger in the Hordes books gets the attention he has been getting of late. He has major setbacks os far, but they do play up how much eh's stirring the pot in things and he has a nice rebel vibe that I can appreciate, even if his methods are a bit scary.

And Magnus has also had a lot of sweet moments. He has some good fiction to him, and he as a character is someone I can sympathize with really well. I like to describe him as a patriot, even though it is pretty obvious he's a downright ruthelss terrorist in technicality. He's complicated a character, whcih is nice.

Note that there are characters I feel are worth a bit of ire. I have yet to read anything involving Haley, anywhere, that i haven't hated. Something about her fluff rubs me the wrong way.

And stuff.

So far I'm pretty fond of Strakhov. Kinda of a sarcastic badass that I find amusing.

Hmmmm.
I guess my favourite Troll 'lock so far is Gunnbjorn, actually. He's got an interesting mindset, what with trying to make the Trollbloods into a proper army, clashing with the more traditional elements, the slight exasperation at the irregular nature of their forces.
Krueger and Kromac from Circle are both decent. Especially Krueger. I like how he's so ballsy.

None of the Everblight Warlocks have particularly defined characters, but Everblight himself is a pretty interesting meglomaniac.
I find the Skorne a bit difficult to keep straight in my head, and I don't have a good knowledge of Warmachine outside of the fluff in Prime, but from Prime, Caine and Kreoss are my favourites.

Definitely Magnus, especially now that he's over being a lovestruck prepubescent girl over Vinter. Always loved Mags' story, but the blind devotion to Vinter was a bit odd.

Skarre. She's a mortal general in an army where other generals consist of obscenely powerful undead abominations, her subordinates fear failing her more than they fear rampaging monstrocities that feed on souls, she can see through the threads of fate to alter the present and future, and she leads an armada across a thousand mile warfront. That's one hell of a woman!

That she is. In fact I find her the only interesting character in Cryx besides Gorshade.

For characters in the factions I actually play.

Cygnar - Sloan, while their may be more dramatic characters i find that she has a flaw in her personality which makes her seem more "normal", most of the other casters seem to lack seem to lack any real flaws that tie them back in with more normal people.

Retribution - i don't know if there's any one caster that has really jumped out at me. I think Ossayan's intro has been the most dramatic action a Ret caster has been in yet.

Skorne - Morticar, he apparently cheated death and nobody knows how. I also have enjoyed Hexeris and can't wait to see what he did to become epic.

"I suppose if we couldn't laugh at things that don't make sence, we couldn't react to a lot of life." - Calvin and Hobbes

DukeRustfield - There's nothing wrong with beer and pretzels. I'm pretty sure they are the most important members of the food group.

Goddamn, I'm happy someone else was annoyed with that story.

For those of you who haven't read the NQ, or want a 30-second recap

(A slightly insulted)
Spoiler:

"Magnus, heree-- I'm some warcaster captain who cares about my troops, and what's more, I care about people I don't know. (Though apparently I've already started torturing guys, which doesn't really fit the rest.) I've also got a good friend (who's clearly not going to die before the end of the story).

Okay, I'm going to join some big offensive against cryx.

All your old friends are there (I mean, here)! Leto (who I dislike for some reason, even though we share similar views/reactions to things), Nemo (who I dislike because he's old, or I fight him in the future, or something), Vinter (who's really cool, or something, because I aspire to be a bastard), and Siege (who's of course not siege yet, and he's okay, I guess). Vinter gives a lackluster speech, which I care about for some reason.

Lots of guys (including a warcaster I idolize) die, I'm sad, and so is Leto, who I am like but don't like (again, for some reason). Vinter is stoic, so I love him. I suck up to Vinter and get a promotion.

I go on a mission and take initiative, and Vinter takes me aside to scold me about not being stupid. There are many contributing factors to me having issues controlling my bladder.

I go on a harder mission, and lots of my favorite trenchers die. Things look tough, but we win. We start to demolish the factory that we're supposed to. Things go bad again, but should be salvageable. Then I get spooked because bile thralls are scary, and I can't wait 20 seconds to try to save my friend (who at some point during the battle gave me his lucky charm, ensuring he wouldn't die with pathos). Instead of waiting or trying to help the situation, I seal him in a room full of bile thralls, but not before exploding the factory at him to melt him with super acid! Mission accomplished, though I feel sad (for my friend dieing, not the stupidity)

Vinter says hi later and I'm sad because my army died. He says, 'no, it's fine.' I say 'okay' and forget about feelings about my dead friend who just died 'cause of… other feelings. End.

Now, I like hardened badass Magnus: he's my favorite WM character, from his cool theme list and vendetta against Stryker, to his humble origins as Bizarro-Stryker and an Army of Darkness joke, but I just don't see how a spineless sycophant turns in to a the current Magnus. It doesn't fit his current character, and I can't see how that alone could be the turning point ("someone with more power than I says I shouldn't care about people, so I don't").

I also thought his new bit with
Spoiler:
Vinter's son
was poorly handled, but that's more a matter of technique than something antithetical to his current character.

edit: other faction favorite characters:

Khador: the Old Witch because she's steampunk Baba Yaga. Maybe Vlad and Strakhov, 'cause they seem like generally good guys in an army of ANGRY PATRIOTS.

Cygnar: Does Magnus count? Well, Caine's probably my fave, mostly because of his link with Magnus, and the antihero thing.

Cryx: the above argument for Skarre is pretty convincing, though otherwise, I'd have said Goreshade, because his evil scheming is more interesting.

Protectorate: Kreoss, maybe, 'cause he doesn't seem like a drone or a politico

Trolls: Madrak, because he's the only character I see doing much changing.

Circle: Kreuger, ditto.

Everblight: what characters? Seriously, shouldn't mind control make them non-characters? If I had to choose, Lylyth, because she's had a moment of doubt.

Skorne: Makeda, because she made the faction interesting. Though, Morghoul and Mordikaar are cooler.

Minions: Arkadius, because that takes guts.

I'm pretty fond of Alten Ashley. His story is rather amusing and he's damn good for 2 points. I also really enjoy the self proclaimed Lord Karver, BMMD, esqIII.

Silly characters aside, I would have to say Molik Karn is pretty intense. It says something about Makeda that her gaze was what tamed him... out of sheer fear. Dominar Rasheth is pretty neat too. His existence is offensive to the entire Empire.

Just as another bonus to Skarre in case the Great Rack wasn't good enough, what other mortal can claim that she has earned both the eternal respect of a Lich Lord (Terminus) and the eternal ire of a Lich Lord (Asphyxious) at the same time? Further, that said ire-filled Lich can't do anything about it out of fear of repercussion! That is one hell of a woman.

I'm going to have to go with Dartan Vilmon as my favorite character in WM/H. He isn't super powerful like the Warcasters/locks but he is one of the best swordsmen in the world. He also stays to his beliefs, and the Paladins of the Wall are the good guys of the Protectorate. They protect their flock as well as apply their swords to their enemies' faces!

The Harbinger herself picked him as one of her bodyguards, and he defied Voyle, Menoth's chosen leader of the Protectorate, to protect innocent Menites from being fired upon.

Yeah, he's awesome in my book.

Favorite so far? Would have to be Cassius the Oathkeeper & Wurmwood. When the Druid council decided Kruegar was to be killed for being a traitor it was Cassius the Oathkeeper & Wurmwood who put an end to it. He showed, said that Kruegar was his whatever of the Apolcolypse and left. Morvahna reacted like a spoiled high school cheerleader before being told to hush. Good bit of fluff that was, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A close second is Kraye for me. His reactions to the whole Haley events in the Cygnar book was pretty interesting. He witnesses Haley destroy some super powerful Liche with a crazy display of power and says after, "Want to tell me what that was all about?" Subtle question for a "Holy CRAP" moment.

Sorscha is a pretty cool character along with Vlad from Khador. I find the whole thing they have together interesting. I always find it funny when I play eSorscha and my friend puts down Butcher since Butcher killed Sorscha's father.

I wish Legion of Everblight had more interesting warlocks, but Everblight is cool. I like Lylyth. She seems to be the most "human" out of all of the locks.

I gotta say, after reading the fluff on Alexia, I have really taken a shine to her. Just the image of a 15-16 year old girl beating the snot out of 4 armed couriers and 4 Illuminated so she could take 'her' sword back is just great. "She's not evil, just misunderstood".

16 my a**.

The same way the Harbinger's around 16, but 7 ft tall and doesn't exactly have other physical characteristics of a 16YO.

Their ages are silly: Nemo's a bajillion*; Karchev has been in his suit for something like 80 years, which happened after he was a full warcaster and the ranking officer of his army; The Coven are something like 18 but look 25; Magnus is probably in his late 50's and can, with a game leg, outpace and beat the snot out of a warjack (given game rules); Skarre has got to be around 60 to make the new Magnus fluff make sense, Vinter must be in his 60's and can rip a warjack in half, etc.

Too long: PP's ages are inconsistent with how their characters act. Also, they don't have many characters that actually read as anything but asexual (with the rare seductress exception), but that's a different topic.

*actually, around 75, which is close enough to a bajillion, when talking about unaugmented humans in combat zones
