I think it is. The open world idea got me for a while as I kept going back to Firelink Shrine thinking it was my base or something.

Don't remember him being like that. He has a tabard with a sun on it, and green leafy shoulders (could be fur I guess!).
Spoiler:
Just fought the first boss of Anor Londo. The music for this pair is amazing. Fight seemed easy enough with Knight Solaire Tanking, and then I killed the big guy, and the other one went Super Saiyen.

You're thinking of the miracles vendor at Firelink Shrine. Solaire can be found for the first time after you clear the Taurus Demon. Head down the tower that the Taurus Demon jumped off of, and then hang a right (away from the Hellkite's bridge). A fully armored knight will be standing at the edge of a cliff. Talk to him twice I believe to get the stone.

Yep. Just got past that demon today. So does being human or undead actually change anything in game?

Yes, it actually has a huge effect; you can only have any sort of MP if your Human, and being Human with more Humanity grants you increased drop rates.
Other than that, it only effects how certain NPC's talk to you; some of them will mention your husky form.

It quite annoyed me as a Hollowed to be unable to invade others to steal their humanity. Damn game forcing me to -help- others to regain it!

Seems like a pretty good review of the game. I'm interested!

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought about posting it here.
I never played Demon's Soul, but it looked and sounded interesting. (dont have PS3) But I'm thinking of DS and wanted to see what you tell a noob about this type of game. I do hear and have read about it being hard, I get that. I just wanted to see what people had to say about it (beyond what has been posted, of course) and what advice you would tell.
Thx.

Well, my best piece of advice would be to tell you to stay as calm as possible while playing the game. I know you've heard it's hard and you die a lot, but I really do think that's an understatement.
I would recommend being one of the simple classes to start off with eg. soldier, knight etc. Don't be barbarian to start, or you will really die a lot.
Also, don't trust your shield that much. This was truer in Demon's Souls, but it is still valid here. Many enemies, especially bosses can still cause damage to you when you block. That's the worst case because it takes all your stamina and damages you. That being said, if you are soldier or knight, then your shield is probably way better than my hunter shield, so I'm not 100% sure there.
I would also look for other player's soul signs (white signs on the ground), which you can summon to help you. Players who place those signs have often defeated the area boss and are pretty good players.
You said for "this type of game", so I assume you mean RPG's in general? As you've researched some stuff about it, you probably know it's a grim dark fantasy universe. You chose your character class and can customize your character at the beginning. If you want to research it more I suggest you google it.
My last piece of advice: watch your stamina gauge. It depletes if you do pretty much anything, including hitting stuff. Don't always attack like a maniac or you'll be exposed to a counter attack.

How could other players soulsigns appear in your game if you have no online access?
If you do things right at most bosses you can get a NPC or two to help you, as their "soulsigns" will be outside the White Mist.

The easiest class to play as, in my humble opinion, is the Pyromancer; he has good starter stats, cheapest first levels, and he essentially gets eight free kills per rest.

Woah what? You can get NPCs to help you fight bosses? I'm intrigued...
You only get the full potential of Dark Souls if you play it online. It was specially designed to be played online at all times and to interact with other players. Otherwise it's just another grim dark RPG.

Well the npcs are in part to keep it with the whole "worlds/soulsinvasion" theme. Whilst revived, for example, outside of Quelaags domain you'll be invaded by a black phantom, which is an NPC. Amusingly though, the same phantom also has a soulsign outside of the boss fight so you can summon her to help you defeat Quelaag.
Before the Gaping Dragon, you can get Lautrec and Knight Solaire at the same time.

Shield+spear= very long fight which only works against NPCs.
So what actually happens when you invade world and kill someone? Do you steal their humanity I assume?

I think I can say that the Tomb of the GIants is my least favouerite part of the game. Pitch black (until you find alight source) with giant enemies around every corner. I'm just glad nothing there can curse you. Before that it was Blighttown (but that wasn't so bad once I realised that the enemies with blowpipes don't respawn) and the Depths (being cursed is not fun).
Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.
Yeah, I went into the Depths without knowing about the curse, and was quickly enraged. I had to make a trip to the undead asylum and get it fixed by trading for those curse removers. Still, I learned. I've not been cursed since, bar Transient Curse for New Londo.
I accidently got to Tomb of Giants after killing the previous boss. I was bored, explored Catacombs, somehow got to the boss and thought "Eh, I'll die and find out what he's like". 15 seconds later and "What, he's dead?".
Favourite part of the game would be Anor Londo, Ornstein and Smough, followed by Sif.
Least Favourite so far would have to be... probably The Depths or Catacombs. I didn't like it really, and it seems like Tomb of Giants is gearing up to succeed it.

Yeah, but that's just because pyromancy is easy magic. You can be -any- spec and still do well in pyromancy because all you need to do is farm souls to upgrade the catalyst to 15. Which is what I did.
Currently trying out full Havel Armour (not the Tooth and Shield) whilst wielding either a big shield and the Chaos Firesword, or two handing the Chaos Firesword. Add Pyromancy spell Iron Flesh into the mix for giggles against slow enemies. Absolutely useless against anyone good in pvp, but fun for killing stuff whilst looking like an angry deity.

I got the game today and I'm up to the bit in Undead Burg where you face the tall knight with the shiny armour. Annoying though, he kills me ever freakin' time and I only get to hit him once or twice. How do you kill him? I can usually get to him with 3 Estus flasks and all the surrounding undead dead.
Also, I don't get how you kick or jump attack. It says to move forwards and press R1/R2, but the game seems to decide on it's own whether the attacks work or I just do the default attack for that button.
And is there a way to jump? Because I keep finding spots that I could easily get to if I jumped.
Coolyo294 wrote: You are a strange, strange little manchicken.
To jump, hold B and then tap it fast; you'll do a running jump.
As for jump attacking, it's something you just have to get the timing down; you have to press them both at almost the EXACT same moment.
The tall knight down some stairs? Ignore him, you won't be able to kill him until WAAAAY later, or until you become alot better. I've been playing since day after release, and I still can't beat him.
I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.
As a pyromancer I killed him first time I met him. Took all 8 fireballs and an axe swing though! I just attacked him and backed up casting fireballs inbetween dodging back/blocking his swings.
As a melee only class, they are hard, as they don't stagger, only when backstabbed will they stagger. So you can't shield block their strike and attack once they're staggering back, as they'll just keep striking. You have to dodge their attacks and counter after they've committed a strike. In the narrow confines of that area, it's bloody hard. One of the more annoying things is when judging when they're starting a chain attack so you know when to attack or not.

Not really that long. Pretty easy really when you have an upgraded Winged Spear
Perhaps. Though I personally prefer my upgraded gargoyle axe.
And I'm definately getting a longsword +15, no matter how long it will take.

Black Knights are a serious pain at early levels (or more accurately, with weak gear). If you're hellbent on killing him now, make sure that you clear out all of the Undead in the immediate area, then kite the Black Knight back to the courtyard by the sniper tower. This affords you with space to maneuver, which is crucial if you want to battle something like a Black Knight. Don't attack, but instead circle him and wait for him to commit to an attack, then strafe behind him and go for the back stab. When fighting like this you're best off maximizing your maneuverability instead of your armor (which won't help you against the BK's attacks anyhow), so if you're wearing a heavy suit of armor, take it off. Alternatively, you can kite him up to the courtyard and then immediately climb up the ladder which leads to the platform where the fire throwers were. Once up there you can safely plunk arrows into the Black Knight, though I'm not sure how long that would take given how little damage that arrows tend to do.
Otherwise, you can make things a lot easier on yourself by coming back to the Black Knight later, after you get the Drake Sword, and fighting him then. If you can, try to be in human form when you kill the Black Knights, as your drop rate goes up while you're human, and the Black Knights can drop some really good gear once you kill them.
