I'd add a few vestiges of a door, much like some of the doors one encounters in Fallout 3/New Vegas.

That way it's open but the entrance doesn't seem so barren and artificial.

Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines. Not sure if I should don wood or metal. Probably wood as it's alot easier to scratch build convincing wood than metal.

I'd do wood, that way you can get some nice splintering and ragged edges. Metal wouldn't really fit with the overall aesthetic of the building, I feel.

have a pointed arch above the door, its a small touch but it makes the whole building fit in with the gothic aspect of 40k much better

I'd say vestige of metal door.
I hardly see wooden door in 40k

That beeing said, keep it up, your building looks really great

Update: got a base put on, textured the back of the base and ground floor of the building, as well as the edges of each exposed level. Added detail in the form of a lintle over the door , a piece of rubble hanging from the I beams, and an exposed pipe with wires hanging out as suggested by the wife. Also got a first layer of paint on the walls and fallen concrete chunks. Starting with a brown and will end up with a greyish tanish shade for final color, with added grime and blast marks etc. Not sure what color to do interior walls for a finish. I've thought of doing different colors in different sections to denote different living areas, or possibly even patterned paper to simulate wall paper. Also not sure what do colorwise for the floors and for the ground floor rubble area. For the rubble strewn area starting with the same brown as the walls and then over brushing heavy with greys. Any suggestions?

The idea of different coloured rooms has never occurred to me before. Wow do I feel dumb as that's a bloody great idea!

It's coming along really well, mate.

That is starting to look strangely like a building I've lived in (Boston) ...with the bullet holes and everything haha.

I'm really sorry to hear that. If you had said Kabul or Baghdad I would understand, but Boston? Hopefully not too many bombed out apt buildings in Boston.

Ahh well just from the front anyway, with the 'brown-stone' entrance. It very much resembles the building... not the bombed out half of course haha...

Oh, okay. I feel much better then. It had been a while since I was in the Boston area and I didn't think the economy had hit the real estate market so hard that we were bombing buildings now As for the buildings progress, I have finished the first coat of the second color, its a tan about equivilent to GW 's desert yellow. I've decide to do all the brick and trim work in dark gray with a lighter gray dry brush. The interior rooms will have different color walls with a off white ceiling. Still undecided about the floors. I thought about doing balsa wood planks but got too excited and sprinkled the sand/rock texture on them already so that is out. Any other suggestions?

You could stick something down with a weathered edge further back around the edges to represent the tattered remains of wall-to-wall carpeting?

Nice, I like the wooden beading at the top, never thought of using that.

update time. Got the final coat on the outside walls, first coat on the window and trim details. Did a coat of light gray on the ground floor that I will go back and muddy up with washes later. Ceilings are done white, and got one room painted black (even in the grim darkness of the far future, moody teenagers will paint their walls black) and the wife provided some great red craft paper for wallpaper in one room. Hoping to finish this by Monday for one of the comps over on terragenesis.

Absolutely incredible, start to finish. I've never seen anyone put so much love into terrain, it's really inspiring! Really tempted to go start my own now - thanks for the nudge

I would like to see a lot more effort given to representing rubble at ground level. half the building is missing, some of that should be in piles at ground level.

Wow, the extra detail on the front really turned this from looking good to looking awesome. Great work.

If you're still looking for some ideas for more detail, what about things like wires and pipes for plumbing and electricity coming out of the wrecked walls and floors? Might give it that extra added little spot of realism.

Don't worry tobewilly, it is usable already. As for wires and pipes, I have a pipe coming out of the foundation and one with wires coming out of one of the broken walls. There is a pic of it in one of my posts above, a little hard to see. As for cluttering up the base, it's a practical compromise. I wanted some, but not so much that it becomes to hard to move mini's around. I made the mistake before of putting too much clutter down and it becomes a nightmare to place mini's.

Ok, so I had quite a bit of time this weekend and was able to finish this project. Weathered the outside, finished the base, more wallpaper on the interior walls with weathering, and scratch built and painted a door. I know there was more but it's all blurring together. Oh, and got in my first game with this building. It didn't feature much, but I did get to table my buddies chaos army with my Coteaz henchman heavy demonhunters (I refuse to call them grey knights) army. Also some shots of the building with the rest of my terrain set up on the table. And apparently the back end of one of my bassett hounds in the last shot

Can you blame me, it was a proud moment! Of course down to the last turn it looked like it would be anybody's game. Best kind of game, one where the outcome is in doubt right to the end. I was especially nervous about those obliterators and rhinos. Those things just wouldn't die! oh, and Willy, what do you think of the weathering in the finished shots? I spent about another couple hours with washes and charcoal pencils, I think it turned out pretty good.

Seeing that poster makes me consider printing some stuff of my own. I primarily do Orky stuff, sure, but I know my printer can do relatively detailed stuff so it might be worth a go.

Also, yay more wallpaper.

The weathering looks good. I really like the streaked grit from the top outside. I don't remember the tipped table in the top left inside. Did you add that last night as well?

Yeah, the tipped table was built by the wife, as well as the papers strewn about. I might add various bits like that when and if I have the time. How cool is that I have wife who not only tolerates my hobby, but actively enjoys working on it with me? Damn I love that woman!

so, am I correct in understanding that all you did to make those detailed.... blocks or whatever you are supposed to call them.. you just "carved" it with a pen?

If that's the case.... YOINK!
