Agreed w/ everyone saying its cool and your buddy doesn't know what he's talking about. The only way its a fail is in the monetary sense of the term, you really going to make your already expensive minis even more expensive by buying more expensive minis to chop up and not use for gameplay?

Do it, but with a caveat.
Less is more.
If you have too much of this sort of thing it detracts from the army.
Keep it subtle and restrained and it'll look better.

Sounds like a decent idea to me, anyone calling it a "Fail" needs a punch for using that terminology and some english lessons.
you could even paint your dead, destroyed Guard in his guards colours.

Nothing wrong with it.
I have a monolith and I don't (and never will) play with a necron army. It was bought because it was a cool model that I wanted to light up.
I have a couple of Tau models (I like the models, ditto about not playing them).
I don't buy bits for other armies JUST to use them as deadites on bases though. Not at local retail prices (that's just economic fail there).

As someone else has pointed out maybe that friend is being a sore loser. OP mentioned that they frequently play against guard, when i played i frequently played against Dark Angels and Eldar not because they were big at my store, but because i frequently played against one of my friends.
Now i'm all for cool bases, i'm modelling a dreadnought standing on a fallen freebooter, BUT maybe your friend is taking it the wrong way.
I usually beat my friends Eldar, putting dead Eldar on my marines bases might be cool to me, but an insult to him. Talk to your friend, sort it out*
*I mean that in the manliest possible way.

Nothing's wrong with adding a little character to some units and taking a break from painting the same thing over and over. Whether it be by making an objective marker, using them for basing material or simply painting them up cause you like the model.
I brought a Wraithlord around the time of the Blood Angels release, gave it a Starcannon and grabbed an AOBR marine to chuck on the base then rushed it's paintjob for the event the local store was having for the BA release later that day.
First turn the 5 or so Storm Ravens the BA had pretty much wiped out all of the Eldar forces except for the WL which proceeded to punch a couple of them down and walk through a few squads and Land Raiders before finally falling to almost 2k points of BA by itself.
Needless to say it earned the trophy on the base.

This, you guys should swap bitz, and "promote" things that kill a bunch of the other person's stuff. I have a Carnifex that has pieces of power armor scattered around it. I need to add a GK helmet to it based upon it's most recent performance. It actually almost flattened a dreadknight all by itself, which I feel kind of deserves some accord. The DK was down to a single wound by the time it actually pulled off its force weapon power. At that point, I had the hive tyrant close enough to finish it off.

I love the idea. And as a guard player it would infuriate me in a roleplaying way. Give my army an incentive to avenge the death of their fallen brothers. Thought about doing the same only with eldar or orks, but decided that my army is too professional. If i get some catachens to add to my force I will add trophies.

If you know your friend would not like it....then why do it?
While most of us agree that it is simply a cool fun thing to do, why would you knowingly aggravate your friend?
If your insist on this course of action, then I suggest you do it with a certain decorum.
Simply add an IG weapon or a helmet. make it something impersonal, perhaps painted in generic colours (NOT your friends army).
After all, you don't HAVE to have gorily exploded Guardsmen and legs without torsos spurting blood 10 feet into the air on your bases...painted in your friends colourscheme.

There is nothing wrong with buying stuff from other armies. GW actually encourages this.

And really rubs it in if you paint the base addition better than their entire army.
My only concern with it is that it can look kind of silly if over done. Also it might look odd if your bases are littered with bodies from armies that you are not fighting at the time.

Given that several GW box sets COME with trophies taken from other armies, I'd say your friend is wrong. If he doesn't like it, he might consider boycotting GW themselves.

Hell, half the fun of 40K is earning trophies from battles you've been in!
I was fighting a mate's SM army, he had a squad of Termies standing on a road, and for whatever reason I decided to tank shock 'em with my poor little Rhino. He chose to do a Death or Glory! stand with his Terminator Champion... and failed.
My Rhino popped his head off. XD Afterwards my mate gave me a spare Termi helm to paint up (complete with tyre tracks!) and stick on the Rhino as a memorial to its epic achievement!
So yeah, I see nothing wrong with getting bits and decorating bases with them, though I personally prefer to only do that when one of my models has actually earned some sort of trophy, heh. Though buying an entire box of troops just for bits makes me sad in the wallet. Maybe see if your mate has any spare bits instead, and would be willing to donate 'em (and vice versa!) whenever either of you do something awesome in a battle.
