I am so out of touch with WD that when I went to the game store today and wanted to see the new WD, I was surprised to find in wrapped in plastic.

Oh, imagine my surprise, too. I usually flip through the WD at the store whenever I'm in there just out of curiosity, to see if there's anything inside of any worth (other than the painting articles, no, there isn't), but now the obnoxious pricks have gone and wrapped it so you can't even do that much.

A $10 catalog that I can't even flip through first before deciding to purchase, and not surprisingly, never has enough content in it to warrant a purchase in the first fething place. I've bought three issues in about four years, the last one was the DE issue that came out a year ago and I bought that ONLY for the painting articles in the back...and really I don't think I needed the articles that bad anyway. Instead of making some crazy bs mix of like 6 different colors just for the armor highlights, I think I'll go to Vallejo and buy Scurvy Green instead and save myself the headache.

Whatever, it's their "magazine" I guess. I haven't been buying it anyway because it's a piece of gak, but if they don't even want me flipping through the thing at the store and thinking about buying it, I'll happily oblige because there's a lot more I'd rather spend my $10 on.

Why wouldn't they put that bugger on a square base so it can be used in a dwarf army? I guess it's for display only.

How so true. They sealed it up so we can't see how bad it is now.

I think 2011 will be my last year with a WD sub. It's not that the magazine is objectively bad. It just hasn't kept my interest relative to the cost.

I get 40-50 issues of The New Yorker magazine for ~$45. And I barely get through what I want to read every issue. I recently re-subscribed because they offered me a free yearlong subscription to give as a gift to someone else. I hadn't been planning to re-subscribe this month (since my subscription runs through another year maybe) but I figured why not? Gave the subscription to my mom (who got me hooked on reading Time and Newsweek when I was in grade school).

Me, I browse the WD at the game store if they have it, and scoff at the price. A few years back I could see the value somewhat (though I still just browsed it in-store). But at these prices... well, I guess they have to pay more money to the Polish printers to prevent leaked pics!

This edition seems to be wrapped as there was a Christmas gift catalogue insert. Not sure why you colonial types are always wrapped, perhaps GW suspect you of some sort of revolutionary shenanigans and will want to recover their loot from Boston harbour?

Rather embarrassingly I can confirm that the previous three were not wrapped (the two SoB issues and for DF painting guides). This issue I got because I am on holiday in one of the duller parts of the UK (Norfolk!).

I'll back what Red said about the paint job in the WD model, it is exceptional.

Usually they are not sealed, this time there is a small "wishlist leaflet" added.

Guess you missed the service change announcements they sent out. That's the new reality if you get it at home (and I do and have for many years).

This means that the cost of the model adds nearly $21 to to the price of the magazine, not $7 as previously posted. Remarkable.

EDIT: oops, you edited the OP title to reflect this already.

The pages on the miniature WDs are not photoshopped. I was talking to one of the studio guys who I have known for a long time and he was saying about how amazing the paint job was in recreating the pages. So it is all real.

The last issue I got was the one when Ogres were announced. I had plenty of money at the time and did not resubscribe.

Manchu wrote:It's not that the magazine is objectively bad.

This is where we disagree. It really does kinda suck, especially when proportional to the older ones. I'm not a longtime reader, and I don't have a haze of nostalgia coloring my perception - right before I subscribed, I ordered a stack of 10 year old issues off Ebay for cheap (which prodded me to subscribe). So, looking at them from then and now, it has gone drastically downhill in quality. There used to be all sorts of tutorials and neat stuff in there, how to build terrain from stuff around the house, rules additions, scenarios, stuff like that. They showed some new releases but they definitely were not the focus of the magazine.

I'm not glad to have stopped subscribing. I wish they'd turn it around because I'd love to read the magazine they used to put out.

For longtime players, is it the entirety of the HHHobby that has gone this way - that Games Workshop kinda peaked 10 or so years ago? I have no idea, I've only played since 2008.

Surfing the Tervigon Wave...on a baby.

Well, ever since subscribers started getting their magazine after the release....

I'm not subscribing again for a good long time, until the quality improves as well as the way they treat subscribers. You used to get the sodding thing a week in advance, not a week later!

And the last subscriber only model I got was the metal WD on foot, which is perfectly suitable for a Dwarf army and looks the part too. Such a shame they seem to keep trying to push these silly models - if they were useful for other things they'd be more in demand.

Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but isn't it traditional that a yearly subscription works out cheaper than paying monthly, you get it before the shops do and that the free gift that comes with it is actually free? I mean it's not as if they have to buy the free gift from someone else is it? I remember when I subscribed to a photography mag I got the subscription at the lower price and a free quality, waterproof camera bag. Mate recently took out a subscription and got a free tripod. None of these company's have the benefit of writing off the production costs of the magazine against tax and they have to buy in their free gift!?!

I must be missing something here surely? People can't be that stubborn that they feel the need to keep paying GW for their brochure?

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. In WD's defense, the subscription, even with the model is still cheaper than buying each issue. However, it's only about 10% cheaper, whereas most subscriptions are 25-50% less than the cover price. The price for the individual figure is rediculous, and I think they only price it that high so they can make the subscription look like a deal.

Not surprising since it's GW.

Amazon and Barnes & Noble online are advertising 1 year Playboy subscriptions for about $16.00.

Men's Health is $25.00 for one year.

National Geographic is about $47.00 for two years.

It's a safe bet, I think, that most of the people reading this thread would agree that any of these cited magazines has infinitely more meaningful and valuable content than does White Dwarf at a fraction of the cost.

Im good for money to buy it, and I do generally enjoy it (except that dreadfleet one. never seen a more advertising catalogue ) just such poor subscription service gets me so annoyed. It would be much quicker to just go buy them from the store.

GW should pay you $95 per year to sift through that rag. I think my last WD subscription in the 90's ran about $30 (and I got a FREE box of plastic Stormtroopers)
