Amazingly, the price of a White Dwarf subscription with the new model is $95.75. If you purchase it with the current model, the Gyrocopter Pilot, it's still $88.25. The new model is Finecast so I guess the raised the model price about $7. That older model is about to be discontinued in a few days.
The current price without the model is still $75 US for one year, $140 for two years. I wonder how long that will last.
The new Finecast 2011-2012 White Dwarf Subscription model is in GW stores for sale already. The price of the model by itself (sold only to existing subscribers of course) is $20.75. Till now these subscription models have been between $13.25 and $15.00 US. That is a significant jump.

White Dwarf: Subscription in a box
The Sub-in-a-Box is the easiest way to get your hands on a White Dwarf subscription. Simply add it to your cart, select where you would like to have your White Dwarf sent, complete your order, and we'll do the rest - it really is that easy!
The Subscription Box, or, as we like to call it - the Sub-in-a-Box, is a great way to ensure that you never miss an issue of our hobby magazine. You also save a bit of cash off the cover price and you get the special edition White Dwarf miniature, which is only available to White Dwarf subscribers.
This year's incarnation of the White Dwarf features Grombrindal dressed as a pirate. Complete with a parrot, pop-gun and a treasure chest full of White Dwarf magazines, this figure will make a fantastic addition to any miniatures collection.
This box contains one special edition White Dwarf Subscriber model and includes a one-year White Dwarf Subscription (12 issues). The White Dwarf miniature is a finely detailed resin cast kit that comes as three components, and is supplied with a 40mm round base. This miniature is supplied unpainted and requires assembly - we recommend using Citadel Super Glue and Citadel Paints.

I like how you have to pay extra to get the figure. By taking out a subscription you merely earn the right to buy a model at the standard rate (£8) which almost wipes out the original saving.

So, wait, let me get this straight:
There's a magazine that comes with the $95 Finecast model? I thought the Finecast model only came with White Dwarf... and that's not a magazine.

It's the same company that dubs it's old useless stock as collector's items and jacks the price up twice as high. You should be happy they make a magazine that comes with the 95$ collector's model. Seriously, at least they didn't make the model something game breaking and insane and make it only available to people who subscribe.Yet.

Funny enough, my local store let me buy the previous WD Model with out getting a subscription*. And they'd probably let me buy the new one without getting a new sub. (although I will probably renew my sub just because I do get some value out of the magazine.)
*The moral of the story? Don't be a bad person I guess.

It just adds insult to the injury doesn't it? I resubscribed for a number of years the last time they had some real promotions like extra issues, etc. When my subscription ends in a year I may let it lapse for the first time after about 2 decades of continuous subscription.

And now that I don't get it till about a week after new releases are announced even the previews in the magazine are worthless and out of date by the time I see them. It's terrible that something I've enjoyed so much for so long has reached this point.

Just pulled out Issue 240 From Jan 2000.
A WD subscription was $50 USD and it came with a free boxed kit you could choose from a very long list. The box kit is about a 22.99 value if you use the Catachan Jungle fighters box (had 20 figs then but that's another issue...) which is on the list and priced in the mag.
So $50 bucks and a $23 kit compared to $95 and a 7 buck figure today, that is considerably more than a a doubling in price! Taking into account inflation, is there anyone who believes the quality of the magazine has increased enough (or at all) to be worthy of the price increase?
If only my house would increase in price the way WD has!

If you do get the chance to see the new WD please check out the little feature they do on this release.
Obviously the pricing and general quality is something you'll have to decide upon for yourself, but everyone should check out the jaw droppingly good paint job done on the model.
The model has little copies of WD kind of spilling out of his treasure chest/similar, and the artist has managed to detail them as actual WD pages. It's quite extraordinary the level of detail he's managed to convey.
You can sort of make it out in this shot, WD has a more overhead picture.

Back when they first announced the changes to WD, I suggested the same thing. It wouldn't surprise me if they made the astronomicon only available for a subscription fee. I actually thought that they would make WD all digital, and only make its contents available online to those who subscribe. But that would require them to lose their fear of the internet...

I'd say they've done this already. When was the last release you can recall that had any proper painting/assembly articles? When was the last time they added new articles to the WD vault. It's been months. Now all we get are some quick fan recipes posted on the blog (i.e. - "Joe sent us this Thundertusk, he painted the fur with scorched brown followed by bestial/vermin brown highlights).

It is jaw-dropping, but I'm pretty sure that's a Photoshop job on the miniature White Dwarf cover and interior pages. If you look at it closely it's "too good". Was looking at it with a bunch of people today, general consensus on that one. The reduced detail on it is beyond likely human capability, even for the studio painters. And I did buy one.
