I don't know dark eldar so I can't talk about that. The marine one is awesome though. Granted its a little short on infantry, but the vehicles are awesome. Plus, since these are all NIOB, you can resell them on ebay really easily, and probably get retail, which would put you in the black. If I had money (or needed that many marines) I would get it.

I like the fantasy megaforces but the 40k ones are 'meh' because they have units with limited usefulness (scout speeder, wyches).

Does not compute.

Pretty sure most people would prefer more wyches.

On eperson's 'limited usefulness' is another's core list unit

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Built a few lists with the contents of the box. At a barebones level; no power weapons, extra armor on the LRC, using only the free missile and flamer on the tacticals, etc; this comes out to a bit over 1100 points.
Making everything Gucci (Captain in Artificer and PF, vets with PWs, giving the LRC Armor and meltas, melta bombs all around, etc) you can squeeze over 1500 points into the list.
I would have traded out the pods for at least 1 Rhino...or better yet just added a Rhino to the kit and traded the Ven-Dred for either a standard one or some Termies to go in the LRC/R.
All in all, if you have a friend interested in starting an army (A SM army particularly) this would be a good starting point. All FOCs covered and, except for the lack of Rhinos, a pretty decent beginners list.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

But except for the Raider absolutely and afterwards except for the wyches according to taste, this battleforce is excellent.
Especially due to includimg 9 Jetbikes!

I've yet to see a competitive list with 9 jetbikes in. 5-6 often, but 9, never seen. Raiders? you seem to be indicating that that's the wost unit there. I would prefer a second raider and less jetbikes. Interesting to see your list with at least 9 jetbikes and no raiders ...

I have uses 2 maxed squads of them, and still won tournaments I've run lists without raiders, and jetbiked up. (venoms and WWP for travel). I do love raiders though, so i don't leave them out entirely most of the time.

Plus, not everyone builds their army with comptitiveness first, everything else a distant second My wife, for example. buys units that she thinks look good, as the painting/modelling is more important to her than the playing/waac-ing... We all get something different out of this hobby, and not everyone builds their lists for the highest cheese factor or the most optimised units.

I'm running a 40k campaign right now with some friends that encourages themed armies, which fit into the ongoing campaign fluff/scenarios. If all we used were the current optimum builds off the net for each army the narrative would be pretty dull, and the same IC would have a dozen clones running around the planet

No doubt, an Ork Megaforce would have the following:

Warboss
40 boyz
9 warbikers
10 Flashgits
1 war-trakk
1 Battlewagon
5 Deffkoptas

From a competitive standpoint, neither of those is appealing purchases, discount or no. For the DE, wyches without enough raiders to put them in, warriors without enough venoms to put them in, and a whole mess of useless reaver jetbikes.

Surfing the Tervigon Wave...on a baby.

Sad thing is? If there was a Tyranid one they'd make it fail rather hard with Carnifexes.

The Marine box is rather nice for what it has in it. A nice mix of things and a solid core. The DE one...? Er? What?

At least the WFB Skaven and High Elves have blatant links to the boxed game...so why DE?

Ever thought that these mega forces are made out of product that is not selling well/and or overstock in the stores? That is my take on all of the this. These box sets IMHO are only good to fill up stop gaps in people's existing armies.

Man do I miss the GW Army boxes.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

Why?

The army boxes were just as bad, if not worse, than the Dark Eldar megaforce is.

We had a thread about this not too long ago. The general consensus was that in the Dark Eldar's case, it's geared more towards those who are doing Kabalite/Haemonculi forces and giving them Wyches that they can swap in for the others--and additionally adding in Reaver jetbikes(why 9? I don't know, but I'd assume it's so folks can field them in large numbers) and Scourges to fill slots which normally aren't filled by those players.

The DE set is too wych-heavy for my liking. I've got a few small wych units already, but I've never seen them get into an assault over half strength after a single bladestorm. I'm still getting this boxset for christmas, but... I'm sure I'll be selling off most (if not all) of the wyches to stock up on more flexible troop choices. Other than the multitude of wyches, I quite like the set.

Army boxes weren't that bad. Necron Phalanx was the best thing ever.

I would have loved to have seen them man up and make an army box for (nearly) every army, that would've been nice. Don't have to even include the shiny new necrons in that but maybe a 1500 point list for £130 for every army would've got alot of people starting new armies.

I may get the High Elf one, always wanted to start fantasy.

1500pt Grey Knights [unpainted] 4-0-0
1500pt Eldar [unpainted] 3-1-0 [retired]
1500pt Necron [painted] 33-0-0 [retired]

Both are sweet, too bad the DE one is kinda all over the place.... both are AMAZING deals for gifting to a new player, or someone starting a new army!

I wouldn't mind either the DE or The SM box. The SM box is a better choice if you were going too play it out of the box, so to speak.
The DE box has some pretty big holes (9 Reavers? Really?), however for £130 both have an awful lot of modelling in them for the money. I'd love one for Christmas me....

I just picked up my DE battleforce a few days ago and am very impressed. I got mine for a great price, and honestly wouldnt have been able to afford the 225 pricetag.

*whistles* is that $225?

That seems like a lot to me. Did you get it 25% off? If so, good call....

30% off. Paid 150 straight for the set. It is perfect for me because I want a Wych force. The Ravager will be a Raider. I used the Kabalites to convert Blood Brides and a Succubus.
They will use the Venom. I will probably use no Heavies, as DE fast attack has some real nice mobile firepower and it fits my theme more.

If interested in watching the army grow my project link is in my sig. (shameless plug)
