Rank the primarchs, What If you were "x" WHFB/40k, Beat this unit, X army/unit is overpowered (these two are better off in tactics and as a proper discusion), Mat ward hate / love, Too much 40k when..., You know that sinking feeling....? and Imperium of man vrs starwars/trek/battle star/marvel/Buffy etc.

Generally they're either spam threads or whine threads. They're best to usually ignore though rarely are alright threads.

For the ones that shouldn't.

Ranking the codex powers can help with the second, although it is also better in tactics where it can be discussed in detail, yet that can be done perfectly fine here as well.
The second actually belongs here in a way, people can be indecisive and it helps to ask though who have somewhat of an idea about the army. This can help them make up their mind and although it is the most common of the repetitive threads it is the least spammy of them. Besides these threads can be ignored if one gets tired of them.
Poll topics are not always simply a waste of space and can contain a few of the repetitive threads in the list, but can also be constructive and quite informing. Like that annual "what do you play" thread, I don't remember who creates it, but he compares the data and you get a somewhat accurate record of the spread of armies on Dakka.

I voted for all the choices.....
That being said I now have to play devils advocate, this is a discussion forum and those topics people seem to enjoy discussing, not my cup of tea, but such is life, and alot of them devolve into my dad can beat up your dad resolutions ( and is the main reason I do not partake of them.)
But if these are what sparks people to post, more power to them, keep them discussing the hobby and maybe eventually they will branch into more meaty topics.

I'm sick of seeing the first, third and last type of threads in general discussion. They're related to background so that's where they should be.

I'm not keen on the "Imperium versus..." threads, nor the "Rank the Primarchs", but that's because I have little interest in marines.

For old-timers repetitive threads can be annoying, but remember that there are still plenty of new people coming in, and a regular tunraround of these threads is necessary to involve new people in a fun discussion. Because you know what would happen if they found one that hasn't been posted in for a couple of months. Necromancy!

So next time you think "Oh god, not this again", remember there are probably several newcomers saying "Ooh, this is fun, I didn't know that".

This thread is pointless, but thank god there's only one that keeps ongoing. I'd like to troll it by just posting "Demolisher Cannon" as a reply to every single thing but I'd rather not waste my time or get banned

I am also tired of the fandex posts. People write faxdexes because they can't make super-powered spam lists from the codexes available to them, especially Tyranids and Chaos.

Most people must like those threads if they keep popping up, if a topic was that despised, it would never return or spend not that long on the main page.

Yes well, that's a problem with the proposed rules thread in general. There are simply a lot of bad ideas in there. There are also good fandexs, like Just Dave's Chaos and Malissa's SoB.

Why don't you just do what a normal person does and not read the ones that don't interest you instead of trying to force people to not discuss things you're not interested in?

I can't be bothered with most of the listed threads, so I just don't read them. Obviously though, other people do want to read and contribute to them, so why do you want to take that away from them?
