Right, I wasn't too worried about it would probably still call them Tie-ranids even if everyone here told me I was wrong It just sounds more natural to me. Honestly I was just curious what the general consensus on dakka thought of it.

I just realised that this argument is based on not only what you see the word as being derived from but also on how the accent of people changes the pronunciation of vowels and syllables.

Tih-ra-nid

Tih-ran-id personally, but usually 'Nids

Hm. This is a good point.

I've always said Tier-an-ids myself, and this was confirmed as correct by Dawn of war 2, however I do remember a guardsmen in DOW: winter assault pronouncing lasguns as Laze-guns which is wrong.

I say 'Ti-rer-nids' - pronouncing the 'Ti' like 'Tim'.
'Tis how I've heard most wargamers say it in the vids too.

I'm a little uncomfortable with people talking about how "most americans" would pronounce it.

Especially you UKers. You know how you have like 47 slightly different accents in just the small area you're in? We've got just as many per area and we're larger.

Here's the best accent map for the states.
http://aschmann.net/AmEng/

I and everyone else I've ever heard say it have said tier-uh-nids

Well, consider the pronunciation of Tyrant and Tyranny. Tyrant is pronounced Tie (as in tie a knot)-rant where as Tyranny is pronounced Tee ranny.

Yep.

This is why you can't use a root word to instantly determine how to pronounce a derived one.

I've always pronounced it Tier-anids. That seems to be the way it's pronounced in the "official" material.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

The idea of an "official" source deciding how words are pronounced seems laughably orwellian.

They invented the word. They get to decide how it is pronounced.

It's like you calling your self JOE-ee. I can't decide to call you Joe-EE.

"Tyranid" is a compound word of the greek τύραννος (tyrannos) and the end of the word ἀράχνη (arachni).
So no, they didn't "invent" it.
That's like me saying "Hey I invented a dog-horse. But I want you to pronounce 'dog' like it ryhmes with 'sheep'".

Except it is nothing like that at all. Stop being obtuse.

Tyrant is pronounced "tie rant". Tyranny is pronounced "teer a nee"

Both come from the same root word. However, Tyranid is a proper noun. A name. It isn't a word. Proper nouns are pronounced how the owner of that proper noun decides they are. Give it up son, you're not going to win this by pretending you know the English language and linguistics better than I do, because I can almost guarantee you don't.

By you, yes. Tyranny in the UK is pronounced ti-ra-nee, hence tyranids being ti-ra-nids.
In fact i've NEVER heard "tyranny" pronounced like that. Must be an American thing.

I say Tih-rah-nids but tie-rah-nids with the long 'I' is also acceptable to me. Just like meh-phiston and meph-i-ston with a long 'I'.

Well, regardless of discussions of whether or not American English has supplanted British English, there still remains the indisputable fact that Tyranids is a proper noun and the pronunciation of the owner and creator of that proper noun trumps everything else.

This really wasn't about "wrong" or "right" until you decided to challenge that simple fact. Now you're wrong, where before you were just different.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

So you pronounce "Paris" as paree? Moscow is Mouskva? etc.
Going by the rules that you've just made up, GW, being a British company, would use the British pronounciation, i.e. ti-ra-nids. I've never heard any other pronounciation in FLGS or from the lips of whatever spastic nerd I happen to be talking to.

Look man, I can understand your frustration. You thought you'd try and look smart and use a reference to literature. Then you thought you'd look smart by bringing up the fact that a large number of words in the English language have Greek and Roman roots. What you hadn't expected was that you'd use it to try and counter the expressed opinion of someone with far more education than you in that field.

But now you're just grasping at straws.

I don't even know what that means.
You claim that the "creator" of a word decides how it should be said, regardless of cultural context or background (typically American). Then you decided that because Americans pronounce it one way, it MUST be that way (Games Workshop does not have a computer program that 'speaks' so it's still all down to interpretation).
You then bow out with one last flatulent ad hom.
I literally have no idea what your point is other than to show off that you're accredited by some American "university" in some nonsense liberal arts course.

@Joey and Vet. Sgt.

I realise you are both very passionate about the game, and want to see it done right, even if it is just the simple pronounciation of a word that GW made up. But this isn't worth either of you resorting to insults or insulting each other's countries. It certainly isn't worth either of you gettiong a ban.
I suggest you both go and get a cup of tea into you and calm down before posting again

Except only the Brit will want tea

I say it ti-rah-nid, like tyranny and while it's not strictly speaking wrong to have any other pronunciation, any other way would sound wrong to me.

As far as I can tell, all Brits say it like that. And despite GW and 90% of the fluff writers being British, we're still apparently "wrong". Ah well they all speak English anyway ;D
