As the title says. My friends and I call them Tyranids, but we are slightly isolated from the 40k community so I was wondering what the general consensus on this was.

Tee-ranid. Though, Ive been thinking lately that it probably should be pronounced with 'tie.' What with the deviation from "tyrant, tyrannic", etc

in terms of fluff i don't know what the actual pronunciation is but as Soo' said they pronounced it teir-a-nid in the DOW games.

If you were from the UK i would expect you to say tee-ra-nid

if from the us i would expect you to say tie-ra-nid

if you were from canada I would expect you to say: excuse me, eh

I call them tee-ra-nids. But I should probably say tie-ra-nids, because it indeed seems a bit of a deviation from how I would pronounce Tyrannofex, Tyran and so on.

Adding in a vote for the 'tier' pronunciation. At my shop everyone just calls them 'nids, though.

Yeah, tie as in tie a knot seems more natural to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

Teer-anids here. Although as others have said, we pretty much just call them 'Nids.

Tie-ranids makes more sense, but for me, teer-anids sounds more natural.

Gotta throw another vote in for "Tier-a-nid" pronunciation, but mostly I go by 'Nids.

Have in mind that this word comes from "tyrant," therefore, it's Tie-ra-needs

It's derived from Tyran, the world they first attacked. Technically, if that is pronounced Tie-ran, then it would be Tie-ran-id. However, root words don't always dictate the pronounciation of derived words.

Canada and Canadian, for example.

Since Relic very heavily worked with GW on their games, I'd go with the pronounciation in DoW being accurate. Tier-a-nid.

That's my logic.

Then again, in Space Marine the Meltagun is a Shotgun.

And GW approved that. However, that would be GW approving a mechanics difference due to needing that weapon type in the game and not wanting space marines with scout shotguns.

Pronunciation is not something that changed game to game. It's Teir-a-nid.

Like many words I think the Americans speakers pronounce it one way and the English speakers pronounce it another way.
The Games Workshop designers in the UK pronounce it "tih - rah - nids" with a short "i" (as in tyranny) but a lot of American speakers (of which there are more and more in the UK these days) tend to say tie - rah - nids, with a long "i" (as in tyrant).
So really you can choose either way. Neither is wrong. Different dialects have their own pronounciation rules and I am sure Imperial Guardsmen throughout the galaxy have the same discussion all the time!

Either way is acceptable, IMHO.

Their fluff mentions that they were called Tyranids because of the first notable world they attacked. "Tyran" seems to share the same root as "tyranny", which can be pronounced with a "tie-" or "tih-" sound at the start and still be correct.

So, just use whichever pronunciation sounds better to you.
