Except the Emperor is a corpse on a shiny chair. And who put him in that chair? Yeah, Horus.
I've only read the first book of Dune, and while I noted many similarities (or rather, noted where many inspirations for 40k may have came from), I felt Dune was a much more personal story, and one I enjoyed more. I should really read more into the series.
Also, the Fremen were awesome
Im almost tempted to make Tallarn'esque IG, based on Fremen, with Sandworm Rough Riders (Trygons would probably work?)

I was assuming the Emperor was at full strength. And considering someone's comparison of Leto II with Eldrad, then I have to say a few Librarians and Sorcerers (Tigurius and Ahriman the Unchanging) are as powerful as Farseers, so the Emperor may not necessarily have to be the one to defeat Leto II.

First off, DO NOT watch the movies. They are not Dune any more than watching the Clone Wars TV show is the same as seeing the original Star Wars trilogy.
They are David Lynch's sad, disjointed attempt at taking a masterpiece and putting it on screen, followed by SyFy's well-intentioned remake. But they aren't Dune. Read the books.

Meh, not really. Leto is essentially Eldrad, but instead of killing things with psychic lightning, he does it by ripping -anything- in half while being damn near impervious to any sort of weapon.
Yeah only he's able to manipulate the entirety of human civilization into no longer needing his almighty guiding hand. It takes 3,000 years of his Golden Path before mankind can even mildly surprise him.
What would it matter if he can't kill anything himself? He has entire planets full of zealots to do it for him. He wouldn't take on the 40K-Emperor in hand to hand combat, he'd simply outmaneuver his forces at every turn and leave him without followers. Leto would despise the Emperor for his inability to make hard choices and pity him for the half-life he inflicted on himself because of his lack of resolve.
Dune is the superior model for countless reasons, but none are better summed up than Leto II's speech on why his Fish Speaker forces are entirely female. The Emperor, by creating an all-male force that is intentionally emotionally stunted at puberty, is asking for the Horus Heresy. Leto II understood that and so his forces are entirely women.
I could keep going, but honestly, Leto would the Emperor.

Omnius and the cymeks made an RNA retrovirus that immediately killed 45% of the human population in existence and would have eventually mopped up the rest of them had spice not been found to reverse its effects. It would seem the 40k universe has no spice. I think people are forgetting there are many different armies at many different times that exist in the dune universe. I would say that the omnius/cymek armies could clean up most of the 40k armies through intelligence that only a machine could have. Necrons dont count.

While the Imperium of Man has Space Marines and some pretty advanced tech, the Dune universe has instant space travel without going through the warp and almost perfect future prediction methods without the risk of demonic influence. It would be a bloody and horrible war, but I don't think it is easy to hand over victory to Warhammer so easily.
Dune fleets could appear and bomb a world into nothing before a Warhammer ship could travel between Earth and Mars.

And then several Strike Cruisers enter orbit around Araxis and unleash volley after volley of Cyclonic Torpedos on the planet. Without spice, the Dune guys would be helpless. And Librarians (not to mention the Emperor) can cloud the visions of the Dune witch-priestesses. If the Imperium falls, then pure Chaos would flood the galaxy...even in death the Imperium is victorious, as through death it destroys the Dune people by unleashing the full power of chaos across the galaxy. I can only come to the conclusion that that the OP is very young, for him to say that 1. 40K is more realistic that *anything* and 2.) 40k is a superior narrative than Dune. Which is FINE, I mean we were all younger once and we know how perspectives change. I mean back in the day I honestly believed Drizzt and David Eddings were the most amazing fantasy stories ever told.

Since you're both talking about a character you never read about, and didn't feel sorry for the princess till you watched it, rather than read it.

I like the Dune series a lot and re-read the whole series every few years.
BUT I'll stand up proudly and say that the 40k lore is -way- better than the aberrations crapped out by Frank's son Brian and his partner in crime.
Really. Orks have greater dramatic range and background than his Moritani mooks, Harkonnen morons and Jedi Bene Gesserit and Ginaz Power Rangers.
In short, Brian Herbert should be tossed in a bag with two panes of glass, which should be pounded with hammers by crack addicts and then shot into the sun.
(I feel a bit strongly about it. I wonder if t shows.)

In Boxing matches, you actually get paid to take a dive and make the other guy look good.
In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos. |

If it hasn't been pointed out yet, it does bear noting that Dune is one of the sources for the foundation of Warhammer 40,000 as a thing. I mean, sure, much of 40K is "inspired by" or "directly ripped off from" a number of sci-fi settings and sources... but it pays direct homage to Dune in many, many ways, some obvious, some very subtle, but one would be remiss if one did not recognize that 40K owes Frank Herbert a very big debt.
Also, Dune leads to this:
.. which is awesome.

Humans are not dominant all the way through the series. They are dominated and enslaved by machines for some. Mankinds existence is at stake and they lose billions of lives destroying the machines. There are planets at stake and lives at stake. You must be a troll because there is no intrigue in 40k. Nice thread.
When I was younger I really liked Dune (only the first 4 books). It is far better done/written/whatever than, well, almost anything.
Now that I am getting older, however, it no longer stirs my heart. Stuff like " the first heretic" or " dark disciple", among many others, is a far more palatable food.
Also, a lot of stuff from Dune is used in 40k.

Humans are not dominant all the way through the series. They are dominated and enslaved by machines for some. Mankinds existence is at stake and they lose billions of lives destroying the machines. There are planets at stake and lives at stake. You must be a troll because there is no intrigue in 40k. "Brother captain roman name fights aliens and they kill eachother" 100 years later "Captain other roman name fights more aliens" etc... Thats a full codex for you.
Ever read Inquisition-based stories? I'm pretty sure there's a lot of intrigue there...

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.
'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.' |
