Has anyone here read the Bartimaeus trilogy? It's aimed at young teens but the story is still pretty good (and Bartimaeus is a good character)
It's about magicians who use summoned Daemons as the source of their power. So you'd have an army of magicians on each side with a variety of different daemons of varying power (stronger daemons require a stronger magician to control them etc.) under their command.
However, if the magician is slain then all his summoned daemons are sent back to their home plane. Battles would be a careful mix of defending your own magicians and killing your opponents magicians or all their Daemons (though daemons would of course be tougher and harder to kill, except for the really weedy ones).
In a more traditional fantasy setting the Shannara series by Terry Brooks would be great.

I'd love to see a mass-combat Song of Ice and Fire game.
Parafaith War by L.E. Modesitt would make for a wicked cool fleet combat game. As would the Honorverse books.
An Epic-type Hammer's Slammers game would also rock.
A Emberverse wargame would also kick arse. Massed combat with semi-modern materials and styles, car-based vehicles and the like.
And a Deathlands skirmish game. Mowing down masses of stickies with warwag 1? Yes please.

I echo the Dune sentiment. You would just have to treat sandriders as really heavy armor so they could actually be killed. At the very least I'd like some Dune minis.
Also, a detective RPG based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? would be pretty fun, but Shadowrun kind of covers that.

Mutant Chronicles/Doomtroopers... Target games made some tabletop skirmish game for it, but it never really took off. Still have some ducal militia, trenchers and ashigaru collecting dust.. The minis never reached the greatness of the artwork..
Loved the imagery in the books/comics.. Especially brotherhood and bauhaus ...
Still, i'm considering using the ducal militia to make a small IG force, or convert into skiitari...

Hmmm...an army almost completely dependent on their magician leader, that loses most or all its fighting abilities without said leader...sounds like Warmachine/Hordes to me. Which basically means you already have the rules available...now you need fluff and minis. Automatically Appended Next Post: Jag_Calle wrote:Mutant Chronicles/Doomtroopers... This would be fabulous. Mieville is renowned for being a big geek, so I can imagine he might be quite enthusiastic about a Bas-Lag wargame (or a board game, for that matter).
A game based upon Gene Wolfe's 'Book of the New Sun'/'Book of the Long Sun' worlds would make me very happy indeed.

The Mahabharata. The Ramayana. The Iliad. All would have a similar appeal to 40k. Gods, spirits, monsters, and demons fighting against and alongside humanity and its numerous champions. Over-the-top powers being hurled back and forth, magic and death everywhere. I'd particularly like to stage a battle between Rama and Ravana's armies...although with Ravana's 10 heads and 20 arms, he wouldn't be very easy to paint. P.S. The Odyssey might make a good RPG if you played fast and loose with the storyline.
